Islamic marriage advice and family advice

Can I remarry when we’ve divorced by words only?

What is the official way of divorcing in Islam?

I am a female converted Muslim and had got married last year.

My husband has left me and he said that we were not compatible with each other.

I have not seen him since, I have no way of contacting him.

What do I do in the case of ending this marriage?

Will it be illegal if I had got married again without ending this marriage officially?

As we had got married in a mosque and I was converted there, what are the procedures if he isnt present in the relationship?

Please help me

  1. Salaams Samara,

I am very sorry to hear of your hardships. Do you have your marriage certificate? This will be required in order to obtain a divorce.

You should refer to the masjid where your marriage took place for advice. A woman can initiate divorce (a khula) with reasonable grounds, in your case abandonment. From what I understand, in general the masjid will attempt to contact the husband. If there is no contact details available they have to allow some time to pass before granting you a divorce, I think it is 4 months or more if there are children? In any case consult your masjid. There is usualy a fee for this and you will obtain a divorce certificate thereafter.

You cannot get married again without getting an Islamic divorce. The marriage won't be lawful and it will be regarded as zina.

  2. Asalaamualaikum Samara,

That was very selfish of your husband to leave you without finalising a divorce as it has obviously left you confused, hanging in the middle and unable to move on with your life. May Allah make your husband realise his unjust behaviour for his own sake and yours.

As 'Hopeful' said, you will need to consult a qualified Imaam on this as it is a Fiqh matter. However first consult the masjid/imaam where your nikah took place; they should have records of your Nikah certificate. Even if they do not, I am sure there is a way forward inshaAllah - and the Imaam will help you with this inshaAllah.
