Can I get a certificate to prove I am Muslim?

Nikah in India

A Nikah in Khandala, India, conducted by Aqa Moula. Is there a legal difference in Islam between a written nikah and verbal nikah?

Assalamualikum,

I am so grateful to you who are able to give a reply to my queries to my question last year, "I converted to Islam, but his parents still won’t accept me." I especially want to thank SisterZ. It was so very valuable that i keep reading your advice daily which gives me a lot of confidence. As i mentioned earlier i had embraced islam 5 years back and still following it with love and sincerity. I had already said that i was in arelationship with a boy who is also a muslim and now we have decided to get married in a mosque in india as both of us are indians.

I would like to know if I would get a legal marriage certificate from the mosque. Since I have not changed my name in my official documents, is it possible to issue the marriage certificate from mosque itself with the name in my documents.

Kindly tell me if it is possible to get a certificate stating that I am a muslim from the mosque itself.

Hoping to hear your valuable reply.

  1. Ammu, As-salamu alaykum,

Here in the USA most masjids will give you such a certificate if you request it. They might ask you first to recite the Shahadah and mention the principles of Islam, or the five pillars of Islam.

I cannot speak about India, but imagine it would not be difficult to get it. Indian readers, do you know the answer to this?

    • Charbel Curi,

I do not know which country you reside in but I am sure it is pretty much the same with in all countries. If you go to a Masjid or Muslim Community Centre, there should be a system for witnessing 'reversions' and for issuing certificates. Insha'Allah you will go for Hajj soon, aameen.

  3. Assalamu Alaikum :) I have a similar question.. last year I convert to Islam in Jordan.. But I lost my certificate, and now I'm living in Canada. How can I get a new certificate?
    Thanks
    Mirella

    • Wa Alaihum as Salam,

Mirella, faith does not require a certificate. If Allah Knows you are a believer, it is enough. Still, for official purposes, if you require it, I believe you should approach an Islamic Center and get one.

    • Have you found a way to do it in canada?
IM in canada as well, i need to get a certificate as well.

    • I know this is an old question, but perhaps you could have someone you know in Jordan retrieve a copy of the certificate from the relevant court or department.

  4. I have accepted Islam as my only religion. I have recited Shahada on internet but not in front of anyone. I have made a legal document of the same and also changed my name from dipti to zaitoon and my religion from christian to muslim in maharashtra gazette document. Please help me and guide me to get the certificate of being a muslim as in future I want to go to Haj as it is a pillar of Islam. I have learned Namaaz and also pray the same way. I go to Istema and also learn there. I am from Pune, Maharashtra, India. Please reply for the same.

    • Salaams,

The best thing to do is to research what Saudi Arabia requires from you, and how to obtain it or what qualifies as the proof you need. Then you can go from there.
