Dua’ for one who is sick
What dua' can one say for a person who is sick? For example, a parent for a sick child? Or for any family member or friend who is ill? Or even a dua' for a sick person to say for himself?
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) has taught us things in such cases in which there is healing and a lessening of sickness, as well as reward. That is part of Allah s mercy towards this blessed ummah and the Prophet's care for it. He is the one whom Allah described as (interpretation of the meaning):
Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger (Muhammad saws) from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He is anxious over you; for the believers (he is) full of pity, kind, and merciful. [al-Tawbah 9:128]
Among the things that he taught us are the following:
1 ‒ Reciting al-Faatihah
It was narrated from Abu Sa eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah beupon him) described Soorat al-Faatihah as a ruqyah, and he approved of the Sahaabi who recited it as a ruqyah for the one who had been stung by a scorpion.
- Al-Bukhaari (2156) and Muslim (2201).
Ibn al-Qayyim said about reciting Soorat al-Faatihah:
"There was a time when I fell sick in Makkah, and I could not find a doctor or any medicine, so I treated myself by reciting it. I would take some Zamzam water and recite it over it several times, then drink it. I recovered fully by these means, then I began to do that whenever I felt alot of pain, and I benefited greatly from it."
- Zaad al-Ma aad (4/164).
2. "Lord of the Magnificent Throne"
The following dua' is given in "Fortress of the Muslim", to be recited for one who is ill:
Transliteration: 'As'alullaahal-'Adheema Rabbal-'Arshil-'Adheemi 'an yashfiyaka.
Meaning: I ask Almighty Allah , Lord of the Magnificent Throne, to make you well. (Recite seven times in Arabic)
Reference: At-Tirmithi, Abu Dawud. See also Al-Albani, Sahih At-Tirmithi 2/210 and Sahihul-Jami' As-Saghir 5/180.
3 ‒ "You are the Healer"
It was narrated from Aa'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that when any of us fell sick, the Messenger of Allah (peaceand blessings of Allah be upon him) would wipe him with his right hand then say: "Adhhib il-ba's, Rabbi l-naas washfi anta al-Shaafi laa shifaa ailla shifaa uka shifaa an laa yughaadir saqaman. (Remove the harm, O Lord of humankind and heal him, for You are the Healer and there is no healing except Your healing, with a healing which does not leave any disease behind)."
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5675) and Muslim (2191).
4 ‒ Al Mu'awidhatayn (Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Naas)
It was narrated that Aa'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "If one of his family fell sick, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would blow over him and recite al-Mu'awwidhaat. When he fell sick with his final illness, I started to blow over him and wipe him with his own hand, because it was more blessed than my hand."
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5735) and Muslim (2192).
5 ‒ Bismillah and dua'
It was narrated from Uthmaan ibn Abi l- Aas al-Thaqafi that he complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about some pain that he had felt in his body since he became Muslim. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "Put your hand on the part of your body that hurts and say: 'Bismillaah' (in the name of Allah) three times, then say seven times: 'I seek refuge in Allah and His Power from the evil of what I find and I fear.'"
- Narrated by Muslim (2202).
6 ‒ "In the Name of Allah I perform ruqyah"
It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that Jibreel came to the Prophet (pbuh) and said: "O Muhammad, are you sick?" He said: "Yes." He said: "In the name of Allah I perform ruqyah foryou, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allah heal you, in the name of Allah I perform ruqyah for you."
- Narrated by Muslim (2186).
7. ‒ "Allah Who is in heaven"
It was narrated that Abul-Darda (may Allaah be pleasedwith him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings ofAllaah be upon him) say: "Whoever among you suffers some sickness, or his brother suffers some sickness, let him say: 'Our Lord Allah Who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your will is done in heaven and on earth; as Your mercy is in heaven, bestow it upon the earth. Forgive us our sins. You are the Lord of the good. Send down Your mercy and healing upon this pain'; and he will be healed."
- Narrated by Abu Dawood (3892); classed as saheeh by al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak (4/243) and as hasan by IbnTaymiyah in Majmoo al-Fataawa (3/139).7
It was narrated from Ibn Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (pbuh) said: "The one who visits a sick person who is not dying, and says seven times in his presence, 'I ask Allah the Almighty, the Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you', Allah will heal him from that sickness."
- Narrated byAbu Dawood (3106); classed as saheeh by al-Nawawi in al-Adhkaar (p.180) and by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
While reciting these ruqyahs over someone, for example your sick child, you should wipe your hand over his face, chest and stomach, as the Prophet (pbuh) used to do, and you should sit near your child's head so that you will be breathing over him as you recite the page. There is nothing wrong with blowing lightly onto his face with a little saliva while doing that.
Ibn al-Qayyim said: "The ruqyah comes from the heart and mouth of the one who is reciting ruqyah, so if it is accompanied with some of his saliva and breath, that will have a stronger effect." - Zaad al-Ma aad (4/164).
Over and above all that there must be sincerity towards Allah in the du'aa , and sincere turning to Him and humility before Him, and one should seek out the times when prayers are answered, for when a person raises his hand to Allah in du'aa, Allah is reluctant that the person should remain empty-handed. Do not be hasty in seeking a response, for Allah may delay the answer for a reason that is known to Him, so you should be patient and have certain faith. Remember that the Prophet (pbuh) said: "Call upon Allah when you are certain of receiving a response, and remember that Allah does not answer a du'aa that comes from a heedless heart."
Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3479);classed as hasan by al-Shawkaani in Tuhfat al-Shaakireen (68) and byal-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (594).

Wot if it's a rare disorder..your very young..unmarried..require medication daily..your body can't retain water so your drinking 10 litres of fluid daily if you don't take the medication..u use the bathroom 48 times in 24hours (in 8 hours ur made to wake up 16 times to use the bathroom) doctors say it's incurable and u wonder wot wrong must of you done to deserve such a punishment? Iv never been out with a guy if that's wot ur thinking
Khan, I'm sorry to hear about your illness. But illness is not a punishment from Allah. It is a test, and a means by which we are purified, and our sins are forgiven.
See this post on my IslamicSunrays.com blog: "The Hidden Blessings of Illness and Hardship".
Be patient, and do not despair or be resentful of Allah. Perhaps in the future there will be a cure for your condition, as medicine is advancing every day Insha'Allah.

R Zafar,
Your comment has infuriated me as I am sick and tired of hearing such ignorance. Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani is DEAD. So what on heaven and earth makes you think that he can help any muslim if we just ask of him. And furthermore what is: "ya sheikh abdul qadir jilani shey in lil lah." Astagfirullah!
As Muslims, we worship only Allah and we ask for help only from Him as a Divine Being, not from someone who is dead. Even the Prophet(saw) never made any ridiculous promises as you claim Abdul Qadir Jilani did. And yet the Prophet(saw) was the best of mankind. Abdul Qadir Jilani was human like you and I. Now that he is dead, he cannot hear us or see us and he most certainly cannot help anyone. I am sure as his soul is in Barzakh, he is more worried about his own Hereafter, may Allah forgive him and grant him Jannah.
We as Muslims are distinguished by our clear worship of One Allah Alone. We are also distinguished because our Quran and Hadith are authentic and are the same as when revealed/spoken. There is no room for innovation and there is especially no room for the worship of so called saints and dead men. This is the mistake that the Christians made and they ended up wandering far from the truth.
Perhaps I should be more patient with you, but I find it very difficult to be with this matter as I hear of this type of worship amongst many Muslims in the indian subcontinent. Their stubborness in wanting to persist in believing this nonsense is more than frustrating. Please, please use your common sense! And follow the Quran and authentic Sunnah.

SisterZ is absolutely right. The essence of Islam is Tawhid, which is to worship only Allah, call only on Allah, obey only Allah, and not to ascribe any of Allah's attributes to the creation. If we pray to so-called dead "saints", then we are no different from the pre-Islamic Arabs who believed their idols could intercede for them with Allah; or the Catholics, who also pray to saints. We are Muslims: we stand apart from all such shirk and association of partners with Allah.

I couldn't agree with you more sister - well written reply where you raised a very stong, correct and important point about this disease of the hearts of many Muslims from the sub-continent.
May Allah guide us away from falsehood, innovations and errors instead towards the path of truth.
May Allah rward you and Allah knows best.
R Zafar,
This comment of yours alone shows your extreme lack of knowledge: "i have read almost all books about islam. well almost."
Furthermore you claim the following to be a hadith, which has left me speechless. It is completely absurd and I can find no proof for its authenticy: "we prophets are not dead but are alive in their graves to an extent that we make love with our wives in the graves."
What you are doing is called 'grave worshipping' and it is a very serious sin. But I will not argue with you because you seem to be completely set in your ways.
I shall leave you with the follow Ayah and Authentic Hadith:
Allah(swt) says in Surah Nahl, Ayahs 20 and 21: "And those they invoke other than Allah create nothing, and they [themselves] are created; They are, [in fact], dead, not alive, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected".
Narrated by Ibn Abbas (ra), Abu Bakr said(ra): "If anyone amongst you used to worship Muhammad (saw) then Muhammad (saw) is dead, but if (anyone of) you used to worship Allah, then Allah is Alive and shall never die."
May Allah guide us to the truth,

I love u Sister Z. The love of a brother to a sister. I find u one in a thousand enlightened sisters with knowledge in this world. May the Almighty guide u,ur relatives and all Muslims in the most straight path not the path of the Kuffar and those who went astray. May Allah give u more knowledge and wisdom to enlighten the Ummah.
R. Zafar
what are saying is called Shirk, and we muslims are Ummah of Tawhid , I advise you to read about Islam, and say Astagfuralla because your spreading the shirk and Kufur among muslems here. I would like to thank sister Z for here comments , this is the real Tawhid .
assalamu alaikkum dear sisterZ
i have not known anybody with a more clear concept regardin such shirk .u scored a 100% there.i love u.may allah really guide u n ur family to jannah.ameen .i feel really fed up of ignorant people who perform shirk and feel disheartened.islam is as pure as anything and still they try to deceit it.
Asslamu alaikum Sister Zee. I am impressed by the dialogue on this sight especially your enlightening clarification based on the authentic Islamic text viz, the holy Koran, and Sunnah of our blessed and beloved prophet Muhammad (May Allah's eternal peace be upon him).
Sister Z:
Masha-Allah n Jazakallahu Khair for such a good answer to that brother regarding shirk. Muslims from Pakistan, India or Bangal need to learn more about real ISLAM they have mixed local culture with Islam.
May Allah guide us with true teachings of Islam and we live and die being a good Muslim Ameen.
Jazakallahu Khair
Sister Z
Salaam Alaikum
I was really really happy after reading your comments on Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. Your comments were indeed very good and provided valuable explanation. I hope that many of our Muslim brothers and sisters like the ones above (Mr. XX) I wouldn't name him who still hold on the belief that dead men, saints and walis can help us in attaining something, be guided by ALLAH SWT and the authentic hadith and sunnah of our beloved Prophet PBUH INSHALLAH.
May ALLAH SWT guide us towards the right path, lest we shall all be among the unbelievers for surely illiteracy in Deen may bring a lot of harm, malpractices and innovations.
ALLAH SWT has already mentioned in the Quran that believers who wish to come to HIM should follow the path of the Holy Prophet PBUH and HE SWT has made Islam complete for us.
JAZAKALLAH KHAIR
ASALLAM ALAIKUM
Asslamu-Alaikum, brother
I'd like to point out that this problem is not specific only to ppl of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. In fact, it is very common for ppl to mix their religious beliefs with cultural beliefs, regardless of their race or creed. The reason is that, religion doesn't come into holes and empty spaces. It comes to ppl with customs n cultures already established.
Thanks alot sister zee for clarifying that issue, i thought i was the only one infuriated with such. May Allah reward us all. (Amin).
salam alekum... i m really impressed by the ppl of this site.... may ALLAH give u all rewards..

My heart goes out to you. May Allah grant your child with Shifa
Here are some duas you can read and encourage your child to read also:
"And [God] shall heal the breast of the believers." (at-Tawba, 9:14)
"Mankind there has come to you a guidance from your Lord and a healing for (the diseases) in your hearts, and for those who believe a guidance and a mercy." (Yunus, 10:57)
"There issues from within the bodies of the bee a drink of varying colors wherein is healing for mankind." (an-Nahl, 16:69)
"And We sent down in the Quran such things that have healing and mercy for the believers." (an-Najm, 17:82)
"And when I am ill, it is [God] who cures me.” (ash-Shu`ara, 26:80) (A supplication of Prophet Abraham [as])
"And declare (O Muhammad) that [the Quran] is a guidance and healing for the believers." (al-Fussilat, 41:44)
Also try to make the Morning and Evening Dhikr a part of your daily ibaadah, as did Rasul(sws).
