Is my work haram if my laptop came from a haram source?

My parents bought me a laptop and internet connection which I use for making money with my part time job. They bought me the laptop a long time ago and I try to recall and it seems like they bought it with haram money.

They might have taken money from someone without telling them or other haram sources like lying to the goverment etc. I'm very worried now on the lawfullness of my income. Since they bought the laptop and internet connection with haram money does it render my income haram as well?

Please be aware that I'm 16 and live with my parents and my job is to create websites online and such. I'm getting paid for my services which are lawfull but I'm using the laptop to provide and create the services, without it I cannot do my job. My whole business revolves around the internet and laptop they provide me and since its from haram I was wondering if it makes the laptop haram or my income haram or both?

Please help me out I'm really worried and need a clear answer.

  1. Dude...really? This is the stuff you worry about?

    • Adam,

I think this brother is on exactly the right track if he is worried about such things. Please read and ponder over the following ahadith:

Anas b. Mâlik – Allah be pleased with him – said: "You people do things today that you regard as less significant than a strand of hair, whereas we, during the time of the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – used to consider them destructive sins."

Fudhail bin Ayyadh – Allah be pleased with him – said : "The less significant you consider a sin to be, the more heinous it is in the sight of Allah."

Abû Bakr Al-Siddîq – Allâh be pleased with him – said: “One of the worst sins is a person taking his sin lightly.”

One of the salaf used to say (words to the effect of), "do not think of the size of your sins, think of The One to whom you are defiant when commiting them".

The Prophet (saw) said to Aisha (ra), "O 'Aishah, abstain from the sins which are looked upon as trivial, for they too will be enquired about by Allah." (Ahmad)

Also another saying, "Beware of minor sins, for they will gather together on man so much so that they will kill him." (Ahmad)

May Allah reward the young author of this post for being so conscious, Alhumdulillah. If only more of us were insha'Allah.

      • Will you answer the young questioner?? I want to see your point of view, so that i could learn from you... Thank you

        • Mohd,

I don't know the answer to this brother's question. But I do believe that he is right to be concerned and his concern to me seems to be an indication of his level of God consciousness masha'Allah.

  2. Salaam brother, I would say no, that based on the fact that you cannot keep up your job without it, and it was not your decision to purcahse it with haraam money, however tell your parents and ask if they will buy you a new one with a halal source of money, if they refuse due to financial or other reasons, then continue using until you can fund your own, at which point stop and purcahse your own.

My advice is based on the fact that your are innocent in the matter, and you use it for halal purpose and you need to keep up your job, which can help you fund a new one once you have enough finance, i cant give you a certain answer in terms of islam, i have not come across such a topic in my studies and so i will search into it and inshaAllah give you more detailed reply in few days.

  3. Salam brother

I'm not qualified in anyway. But I have have heard of a case were one guy was very wealthy but most of his income was from haraam sources. At this time the brother was not practising much. Then he changed and sold all of his assets and with the sale of his house started a clothes business

But he was causing him pain as he knew his new income had started from his haraam money. He then consulted a very well known scholar from Pakistan. He was advised that the amount of haraam money that was put into the business should be taken from the business through profit .And then be deposed of accordingly.I think that rule may apply to your situation but you should try asking a qualified alim. For a better answer to what you should do.

i will try to find out an accurate answer for you.i am doing an alim course and we have been studying mukhtasar al quduri and been doing muamalaat(transactions) .so will try and ask moulana saab tomorrow for you

  4. It is the duty of your parents to take care of you in every way... Whatever your parent earn and however they earn it is non of your concern, i mean you dont need to be investigating there source of money and how they earn it.. Where the trouble lie is when you know exactly (without doubt) the money they gave you to buy the laptop came from haram source. And in this case, you are not earning haram for using the money your parents gave you because you got it through halal means (since your parents gave it to you willingly).. Your parents would bear the haram sin since they got it through haram means... However, you wouldnt find much baraka on the laptop since the consequences of using that haram money would reflect on it.... Now lets take another scenario,, if an alchohol seller, or a nude bar manager gave you gift or money, there is no haram, if you decided to collect the money without you knowing exactly how he got that particular money he gave to you.... The point is if someone wants to give you money, you are not oblige to know how he got that particular money or gift, there is no sin on you if you accept it this way and you are accepting halal money, even if you know that his means of livelihood is through haram source, but if you begin asking questions like 'how did you got this particular money' and he know told you how he got it, then you have to reject the money if it's gotten through haram means. Allah know best.. And we all can make mistakes and errors

  5. Dear brother,

simply buy a new laptop when you are able to and then dispose of the one that you have now. Please do not loose sleep over this as it seems you were not aware of this at the time.

    Kind Regards

    Take Care.

    Allah Hafiz.

  7. Brother your income is absolutely legal and halal.
And it has nothing to do anything from which amount the laptop was bought.

however, it would be great if you can tell your parents to return the amount from whom it had been earned and tell them to ask for forgiveness from Allah.
If they do not agree to it you may yourself can do it.
If you can't find the person or is unreachable you may charity the equivalent amount.

    And Allah subhanawataala knows best.

    jazak Allah
