Should I read salah (offer prayer) even though I take Methamphetamine?

I know Methamphetamine is haram so I am not going to argue that. My question is when you are high on the drug, but still very much in control, should you read my salah? Thats one thing if salat is not accepted and thats another whole new ball game if salat is cursing you cause you are high. Now I know I am still in very much on control, its not like where you loose all sense of control and time.

My question is should I still read the salat? Right now I am reading them, don't wanna use that as an excuse not to read my salat. I take Methamphetamine like once in 6 months or so, so my addiction is low. I know its not right to smoke Methamphetamine, I am just worry about salat.

  1. Assalamualaikum. It is the consensus of scholars that one cannot ingest/smoke be in a state of toxicity, or out of coginitive awareness while praying (marijuana, smoking, meth etc).

More importantly you are displaying one of the signs of an addict. Denial. Doing a drug every few months doesn't make it less addictive. It's insane to think you think so. Especially with a hard and addictive drug like a methamphet..

Read the part where they talk about 97% failure rate for methamphetamine rehabilition. It is the most difficult, unnatural (cooked in a lab) and addictive drug known to mankind.

    • Subhanallah.
Normal Poster, I think the article will be great help for the brother.

      • I started using methamphetamine since October,2019 and I lost my soul, my faith in Allah is decreasing.
.I'm trying to quit but unable to do..I'm really helpless..I don't have will power..Allah should save me..

  2. In addition to this, the following Aayah from the Quran proves that you shouldn't be praying while in state of intoxication.

O you who have believed, do
not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying (Surah Nisa Aayah 43)

While you are aware that it is Haraam, you are supposed to try and get she of this drug. Your should try as hard is possible to abstain from it and avoid the Punishment of Allah, and earn His Pleasure.

While you are not highly addicted, it is quite easy for you to avoid it. And there can be no excuse for taking it.

  3. You should NOT offer Salah.

    Proof from Qur'an:

O you who believe! Do not approach Salah while you are in a druken state until you know what you are saying, nor while Junub (sexually impure), except while passing through, until you bathe (your entire body), and if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes from the Gha'it (toilet), or from Lamastum (touching) women, but you do not find water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth, rubbing your faces and hands. Truly, Allah is Ever Oft-Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving.) 4:43

***You are NOT a muslim while taking drugs so your Salah is null and void anyways***

    Proof from Sunnah:

800e Narrated 'Ikrima from Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Apostles said, "When a slave (of Allah) commits illegal sexual intercourse, he is not a believer at the time of committing it; and if he steals, he is not a believer at the time of stealing; and if he drinks an alcoholic drink, when he is not a believer at the time of drinking it; and he is not a believer when he commits a murder," 'Ikrima said: I asked Ibn Abbas, "How is faith taken away from him?" He said, Like this," by clasping his hands and then separating them, and added, "But if he repents, faith returns to him like this, by clasping his hands again.

801 Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "The one who commits an illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer at the time of committing illegal sexual intercourse and a thief is not a believer at the time of committing theft and a drinker of alcoholic drink is not a believer at the time of drinking. Yet, (the gate of) repentance is open thereafter." Sahih Bukhari 82

    **Although this is the case:

“Say: O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Sûrah al-Zumar: 53]

***You should make tauba when you are not high and ask for Allah's help with your addiction. Nothing is worth loosing Allah. Nothing.

    • "I love Allah", it is not correct to say that this brother is not a Muslim at the time of taking drugs. He is committing a haram act, but that does not mean he is not a Muslim. The ahadith you quoted say that one is not a mu'min or believer at that time. This is not the same as not being Muslim! The hadith basically indicate that at the time of committing a major sin, a person does not have true faith in his heart. He is not acting in the manner of a believer.

Please refrain from giving extreme fatwas, especially when you do not have knowledge. You cannot just quote a hadith and make up your own fatwa from that, casting someone out of Islam in the process. Astaghfirullah.

    • What's wrong with you::??? U have NOOOO RIGHT to tell somebody their not Muslim and they're prayer is void?? Who do u think you are to judge- only Allah azzawajaal does. Maybe this person has a link with Allah azzawajaal that you dont- maybe Allàh azzawajaal likes this person more then you- u have no right to tell someone their not Muslim and their prayer isn't accepted. Even with proof from the Quran and sunn ah. U still have no right letting the we words come out of us mouth-

  4. Wael: I am in no position to give fatwas. I only gave proof from the Qur'an and Sunnah. What is the proper name for a believer of Islamic Monotheism? A muslim.

What is the proper name for a non-believer (non mu'min) based in Qur'an? A kafir.

    • Islam and Imaan are not the same. There is a famous hadith where the angel Jibreel came to Rasulullah (sws) and asked him, "What is Islam?" After the Prophet answered, Jibreel asked him, "What is imaan?" The answers were not the same.

Furthermore, Allah says in the Quran,
"The Bedouins say, 'We have believed.' Say, 'You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts.'" [Al-Hujurat: 14].

Allah clearly differentiates between those who are Muslim, and those who have become true believers. We must do the same.

      • Salaam alaikum , It's good to spread and share knowledge brothers and sisters.
There are many different ways people may interpret things they learn, however that is between them and allah , we are not here to judge believers or non believers. Everyone will account for themselves on judgment day.
Allah (swt) guides whom he wills.

For an example : I have heard of a Muslim male, smoking pot, non employeed , and seeks help financially from a local mosque, for food and a little help to cover his stay at a hotel where he currently lives. He prays five times a day, is a born muslim however non arab and can recite hadiths and Suras in Arabic mashallah. He has a good heart.
That being said he quoted " pot is grown in the earth, and it's not prohibited in islam, it's not man tampered with like drugs and alcohol, where men mix other chemicals to create an intoxication "
And he said " in the Quran it says anything grown from the earth is not haram it's ok "
Not on those exact words obviously .

Which brings me to my point
When someone is looking to validate a bad habit the have and deny the truth after getting the knowledge , it's between allah and that person WE AS MUSLIM's should not judge , we are not in any place of that right or power to do so astugferallah.

And we shouldn't try to battle eachother as to who has more knowledge or correct knowledge, again it's between Allah and that person
        Allah guides whom he wills,
Allah knows best what someone reveals and conceals.

        Allahu Uakbar
        Salaam u allaikum

        • Hi..

I'm from India..and started meth in October 2019 just to give a try..and I became addicted..I'm the only earning member of the family, I cannot go to rehabilitation centre..I really helpless what to do..I really don't want to take it..

  5. JazakAllahu Khair. This is something to think about.

  6. Salaam brother,

This is a difficult question to answer but as stated above, you should not pray whilst intoxicated. However while not intoxicated you should read your salat. Salat (prayer) is very important in maintaining a connection to Allah (swt). That is the aim of salat, and if done correctly it should keep you away from the major sins. If it isnt doing this you need to honestly look at the quality of your salat and your relationship with Allah (Swt.)

A more pressing matter is the fact that you are on drugs and what is concerning is you seem to be in major denial about the gravity of what you are doing to yourself by taking this drug. It is almost as though you are saying ' I know it's haraam but I only do it once every 6 months so it's OK.' You are lying to yourself about this. It's not OK, drug addiction will only get worse with time. It destroys your body, your mind, your relationship with Allah, your values. It consumes you and it can wreck your life. Don't do this to yourself dear brother - Allah loves you and you have free will. It is very difficult to get off it but it'll be easier to do it sooner rather than later. With support and determination you can get off this drug. I urge you to make this your priority - take the steps towards this as soon as you can.

Before you do anything though stop and think. How did you get into taking meth? Was it the influence of friends? Was it easy accesibility to it? Why do you take it? Do you like the feeling? Does it provide solace from another problem?

Whatever it is needs to be addressed. Counselling and therapy would be especially helpful for this. And don't kid yourself brother. Even if you are 'in control it doesn't make it OK. Meth does affect you mentally even if you dont feel it. It gives you a 'dopamine rush' which causes a 'happy, relaxed feeling. But even if it doesn't it wreaks havoc with your body. That is haraam in itself. As Muslims we take whatever is good for us and leave the bad.

Our body and health is a gift from Allah - and just like with all the blessings He has bestowed upon us, we will have to answer for it. So smokers: lungs will testify against you on the day of judgement. Think about these things carefully. Also by doing meth you increase your likelihood of death significantly. We never know when death will take us as it is and we are raised up doing our last deed. Do you really want to risk messing up your akhirah?

It's not worth it akhi - even if your in control now theres no guarantee you will be later on. Your playing with very dangerous fire.. Give it up to please Allah (Swt). Make dua and ask Him for help. There are organisations that help kick such habits, so I recommend you contact one if you can. If you let us know what country you are from then we may be able to give you some links for useful organisations.
May Allah (Swt) help you overcome this
    Ameen

  7. brother ,
    asalamalaikum,

leave the drugs, stick to prayers. you want to chase the HIGH , chase it in salah.

may allah make it easy for you.

  8. Assalam Alaikum.

Although I can't offer an opinion, I'd wanted to say I'm in a similar position. I won't go into specifics but I wish you well brother.

I myself am seeking treatment. I wanted to ask a question; just because Salah is not accepted for 40 days, what about someone who is chemically addicted to the point where they need the drug to function and stay normal and if they don't take it they have significant withdrawal symptoms i.e. severe and frequent convulsions/fits which can be serious. as is the case with alcohol? Does such a person not pray at all? Even when they are not drunk and reasonably sober or if they are on medication say methadone which is the treatment for opiate addiction but also a drug itself, probably stronger!

There are many Muslims around the world in this position. And I have been in treatment for three years. Proportionately speaking the few Muslims I did see relapsed. According to counsellors due to family/self/cultural denial. I know in Malaysia it is view by some more favorable and treatment and therapy given and at present in my local area bridge building work is being done with mosques by council treatment agwncies to help muslewms as a cultural group specifically.

I know I've side tracked but what about prayer for such people?

I know according to some of the great psychologists of late (i.e. Jung) only a spiritual enlightening or something of similar magnificence can bring someone back from the jaws of this soul destroying condition. And in Western rehabs they encourage Muslims and everyone else to for that matter to have a conscious connection with a loving higher power..... Allah SWT.

MAY ALLAH HELP US ALL IN ALL OUR SHORT COMINGS AND IN THIER PLACE BLESS US IN HIS MERCY AND BESTOW UPON US GOOD CHARACTER INSHALLAH. AMEEN.

    • Brother Mohammed, As-salamu alaykum. Do your prayers, and ask Allah for help in getting clean and staying clean. Drug addiction is a great test, but it can be defeated. It doesn't take years to get clean, but it does take constant effort to stay clean. Ameen to your dua.

  9. Assalamu Aleykum,

As you have all agreed that one is a nonbeliever during the act of sinning... Then I can't help but ask the following:

How can I be a nonbeliever if I feel guilty when I sin? I feel guilty during the sinful acts. Isn't that a proof of Iman during the act? Otherwise I don't see a reason as to why I should feel guilty...

  11. How long should you wait in order to pray if you been using drugs/alchool for the past 6-5 years and can you pray the next day you wake up after using the day before and recite Quran please someone help

  12. Salaam brothers,

First, high on meth or high in any other drug is not the same with being drunk (i.e. alcohol). Clearly in Qur'an stated, that while you are intoxicated you prohibited to do solah UNTIL you KNOW what you are SAYING. High on alcohol(drunk) will affect your speech[1], hence, you will have trouble in reciting in solah. So, yes, high/drunk on alcohol prohibit you to recite recitation in solah, thus, it's haram as stated in the Book. Stimulant drugs, especially meth, in the other hand will not alter your speech. You will not have trouble to speak or recite surahs, rather you're more focus[2] towards your solah(Personally, I can't tell you the difference between focus and khusyu'). So, the intoxicant being stated in Qur'an is none other that khamr(alcohol) alone. And, I'm aware of the hadith that put all intoxicant as haram...but...hadith can't override Qur'an's fact(I'm also not saying that the hadith is wrong).

Having said that, I do not condone any drug usage, but rather suggest in harm reduction. In my full conscience, i know all the negative traits of drugs. But, that negative traits doesn't allow the user not to perform solah, because it's not stated so in Qur'an. So, my perspective towards those who are being a drug user are equivalent with people whom predestined to be follower of religion other than Islam. We can't blame them for being born in Christian/Jew/Buddha/Hindu/Rastafarian, right? It's god's plan.

Fin, I would have to apologize if this statement are bold and offence others. I would rather being silence if I would want to hurt another human. But, inevitably, drug user all over the world have been mistreated, misjudge and misconduct by any means. Drug users were being put to the lowest in society's hierarchy. So, all in all, support, don't punish(If you also wouldn't want to support, please don't punish 🙂 )

    Wallahua'lam. Happy Ramadhan :).

    [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nootropic

    * This is my personal opinion as a drug user. It might not reflect other's perspective or the fatwa. So, embrace.

    • This is utter NONSENSE. All the Muslim scholars agree that such drugs as cocaine, meth, heroin or whatever are HARAM.

Stimulants like meth and cocaine will NOT allow you to focus more in your salat. You only THINK you are focused. To everyone else, you are bopping around, talking too fast, and completely UNfocused. To everyone else, you look out of control, because you are.

The quality of your speech is not the only indication of intoxication. The drugs you are describing are highly addictive. When you don't get your dose - as I'm sure you know - you begin feeling symptoms of extreme anxiety, restlessness and pain. Also, these drugs induce paranoia.

Furthermore, these drugs cause rapid physical decay. I have personally seen meth users go in only three or four months from being healthy, to being physically wasted, sores on their skin, and their teeth rotting. Then, because the drugs are expensive, they start stealing from everyone to get the money for their fix. Formerly law-abiding citizens turn to burglary, robbery or scams.

Brother, you have a DRUG PROBLEM. If you want to live in denial, that's up to you. That's part of the addictive mindset, after all. Addicts never want to admit their problem. But don't try to fool yourself that it is halal, or acceptable in any way whatsoever.

Read the article that you yourself linked to: "There are only a few drugs that are known to improve some aspect of cognition." One is caffeine. Cocaine and methamphetamines are NOT cognition boosters. They are harmful, destructive, addictive and illegal.
