Salat ut-Tasbeeh
Did you know there is a special salat, aside from the regular five and their nawaafil, that brings great forgiveness from Allah? It is called Salat-ut-Tasbeeh.
It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud and other books of hadith that Rasulullah (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam once said to his uncle Hadrat `Abbas (r.a.) :
O Abbas! O my uncle! Shall I not give you a gift? Shall I not show you something by means of which Allah Ta`ala will forgive your sins, the first and the last of them, the past and recent, the unintentional and the intentional, the small and huge, the secret and open?
Rasulullah (sallallahu `alayhi wasallam) then taught him the Salah al-Tasbih. Furthermore he advised him that it be offered daily, if possible. If not then every Friday or once a month or once a year or at least once in one's life time.
Salah al-Tasbih consists of 4 raka`at. It can be performed any time of the day or night except at the makruh times.
The following tasbih is recited seventy-five times in each rak`ah totalling 300 in the 4 raka`at.
Subhaanallaahi walhamdu lillaahi walaa ilaaha illallaahu wallaahu akbar
The method of this salah is as follows:
- After beginning the salah by saying Allah-u-Akbar recite the thana ', then Sura al-Fatiha and any Sura followed by the above tasbih 15 times.
- Then go into Ruku and after reciting the usual tasbih for ruku` recite the above tasbih 10 times.
- After standing up from ruku` recite the usual Rabbana Lakal Hamd and thereafter recite the tasbih 10 times.
- Then go into Sajda and after reciting the usual tasbih for sajda recite the above tasbih 10 times.
- Then sit up from sajda and recite the tasbih 10 times between the two sajdas.
- Thereafter go into sajda again and after reciting the usual tasbih for sajda recite the above tasbih 10 times.
- Then sit after the 2nd sajda (i.e. before standing up for the second rak`ah) and recite the tasbih 10 times.
This adds up to 75 times in one rak`ah. Do the same for the remaining 4 raka`at.
Special notes for Salat-Ul-Tasbih (according to IslamicAcademy.org):
1) Do not count loudly. It will break Salah.
2) Do not count on fingers or by holding a Bead Tasbih in hand. It is Makruh.
3) You may count by pressing the fingers as a reminder. For example if you are in Ruku. You may press pinky of your right hand first for the first count, then the finger next to it for second count, then the middle finger for third count, following this method untill you reach the pinky of left hand will give you an exact count of ten. Use the same method in Qayam, Sajdah and Jalsa.
4) If missed a count then make it up in the next posture. For example if forgot to recite Tasbih after Surah in Qayam. Then you may recite Tasbish 20 times instead of 10 in Rukuh after "Subhaana Rabbiyal Azeem". Missed Tasbih cannot be recited in Qayam after ruku and Jalsa between Sajdah. If you missed the Tasbih in Ruku then recite 20 in the first Sajdah instead of the Qayam after rukuh. Similarly if missed the Tasbih in first Sajdah then do not make it up in Jalsa. Instead recite missed tasbih in the second Sajdah. If Tasbih has been missed in last sajdah of second or fourth Rakah then you can recite the missed ones before Attahiyat in Qaidah.
5) If you miss a wajib in Salah and have to do Sajdah Sahaw. You dont have to recite Tasbih in Sajdah sahoo, since the 300 count has been estalished. But if you had missed Tasbih in any of the postures and remeber it now. Then you may recite the missed Tasbih in Sajdah Sahaw now.
6) It is preferable to recite after Surah Fatiha Sura Takathuur in the first raka’, Surah Wal A’sr in the second raka’, Surah Kaferoon (qul ya aiyuhal Kafiroon) in the third and Surah Akhlas (Qul hu Allah-hu ahd) in the fourth raka’. If one does not remember these surah they can recite the ones they prefer.
Is it Authentic?
According to Moulana Muhammad ibn Moulana Haroon Abassommar, the ruling regarding Salat-ut-Tasbeeh is that it is permissible and, in fact, very meritorious.
The Hadith in question has been accepted as Sahih (authentic) or Hasan (sound) by various eminent Masters of Hadith. Those that claimed that it was weak did so on the basis of a few chains of the narration. However, if all the various chains be gathered, there will remain no doubt as to its authenticity.
Hafiz ibn Hajar (RA) mentions the Hadith of Salat-ut-Tasbeeh and he accepts it to be in fact either Sahih (authentic) or Hasan (sound) and not Dha'eef (weak). (Ibid)
Imaam Tirmidhi (RA) says that many Ulama, among them Imaam Abdullah ibn al-Mubaarak (RA), have accepted the virtue of Salat-ut-Tasbeeh. (Tirmidhi vol.2 pg.348; Hadith 481)
Imaam Bayhaqi (RA) states that ' Salat-ut-Tasbeeh was the practice of Abdullah ibn al-Mubaarak and may pious predecessors of various eras. And this in fact lends strength to its acceptability.' (Shu'ubul Imaam vol.1 pg.427; Ilmiyyah)
Many other famous Islamic scholars have performed Salat ut-Tasbeeh as well.
And Allah Ta'alaa knows best.

Salam, Br. Wael
Since you were kind enough to put this post up, can you also post up the correct method for tajhajjud salat. I am very confused - my mom always taught me to do witr as part of Ishaa and then 2 units nafil with "neeah of tahajjaud after witr" knowing that I may not wake up for tahajjud, so I could get benefit of tahajjud that way. The websites/books I have looked at, make witr a part of tahajjud AND also make it very complicated
http://www.duas.org/tahajjud.htm
....so I am very confused.
Also, I recently learnt about "salat e wehshat e qabr" from a friend bec I mentioned to her taht I am terrified more of the punishment of the grave than actual hell fire, as I believe (hopefully!!) that I have not committed any major sins in my life to go to hell for eternity - though I could definitely improve in doing my 5 daily prayers - and she told me pray this salah. I have never heard of it.
thanks
Wa alaykum as-salam,
For authentic information, check the Fiqh us-Sunnah chapter on Salat al-Witr:

The answer to my questions is incomplete: This only talks about witr prayer, not tahajjud prayer and you did not answer about the salat wehshat e qabr. thanks.
As of what i know and have heard from sheikhs on Huda Tv..they have said Salat ul tasbeeh is considered an innovation because the chain of narrations is weak..and only one companion mentioned it..What are we to do if scholars keep having different stances on Issues like these?? who am i to believe????
according to some ulema it is something that shud b done on regular basis as the hadith is hasan
but again according some other ulema it is an innovation and hence a biddah and shud not be done.
my feelings on this issue are that if something like this was so good then y was it not prescribed to be done once every day or more to the point y was it not given to the holy Prophet (sws) with other prayers and y the saying that it shud be done on a weekly or monthly or yearly or once in a lifetime basis?
the best thing that can be said about this as some ulema also hold this view is that it's ok to do it if one feels like doing it ( ie. mustahab) act but getting people to do it and spreading the rumours of it enabling forgiveness for one is tantamount to letting people at large ignoring the 5 daily prayers. it's human nature to take the easy way. people will think that if they do this and not 5 regular prayers then that will be ok and before u know it will lead masses to think along the same lines and hence to ignorance and hell.
logic will tell u that the holy Prophet (sws) wud not have prescribed something so volentary that wud have had so much effect that it will wipe off all one's sins! also it goes against the normal way of praying fardh salah.
I think that it's another one of those innovations by shias and brelvis among others. these are the ones who look for short cuts in everything like the jews did.
May ALLAH guide us all and save us from innovations.
Good Opinion brother..Thats how i feel too. JazakAllah u Khairan!
assalaam alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh, what time do i need to recite 10times tasbih; after attahiyyatu or before attahiyyatu. JAZAAKALLAH
Walekum Salam Wa Rehmatullahi wa barakathu. While sitting at tashahud, say the attahiyyat, then say 10 tasbih, the tasbeh is to be said after completing the normal recitations. And Allah knows best.
Amazing how anyone can say Salat al Tasbeeh is a bid'ah when it has clearly been narrated through a Sahih or Hasan Hadith. And furthermore, was clearly supported by Imam ibn Hajar, Imam Bayhaqi and many others.
In regards to why it wasn't then made fardh, Allah and His Messenger know best! There are so many beneficial nawafil which have not been made obligatory; maybe for the convenience of the believers so it wouldn't become difficult for them. Nawafil is there for those who want to implement further effort and ibadaah.
For all those genuinely interested, pray Salat al Tasbeeh and discover the beautiful peace which results therefrom. May Allah forgive us all.
