  1. I have similar concern, and I await good advice and references to read in the Quran. It is a bit embarrassing to ask.

  2. Brother, Asalaamualaykum,

The Messenger of Allaah (sws) said: “The fitrah consists of five things: circumcision, trimming the moustache, cutting the nails, plucking the armpit hairs and shaving the pubic hairs". (Al-Bukhari and Muslim.)

He(sws) also set a time limit of forty days, and the hair should be left any longer than that, because of the hadeeth of Anas ibn Maalik (ra), who said: “He set us a time limit of no more than forty days for trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hairs and shaving the pubic hair.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/284 and Muslim, 1/222).

Brother, Allah(swt) does not want to make things difficult for us and so we must remember that removing hair from these areas is for our own personal convenience and hygiene. If one did not ever remove pubic hair, it would eventually become quite impossible to cleanse oneself properly through 'just the normal washing after relieving one self'. The person would also begin to smell. And if a person never removed the underarm hair, again, he/she would sweat extensively and smell. And it is not for a Muslim to be unclean or smell - if he can help it. And if you find it such a chore, you need only remove the hair 'atleast' once every forty days. That cannot be too difficult to manage, surely?

There are many ways of hair removal. Some methods are painful, some are less so. But the more you get used to it, it becomes quick and easy and a normal part of your washing routine. See this website for various methods of hair removal: http://pinkislam.com/health-body/shaving-pubic-hair.html

So happy Clipping, Waxing, Shaving, Threading, Creaming or whatever method you choose. Or you can always zap it away for good with Laser treatment - no pain no gain!

Also, every time you begin to remove your hair, do it with the intention of pleasing Allah, and it will become an act of ibaadah for you and hence you will gain reward for it. So not only will you be left feeling squeaky clean, you'll also be blessed with a Divine Reward!

  3. Thank you, SisterZ

I have further questions in this area, I can create another post if that is appropriate. My questions are:

My profession requires my appearance follow a rather restricted code. Can I trim my beard every forty days or is that haraam, should I let it grow? Also, can I keep my hair rather short? I am trying to find a way to please Allah and also maintain my standing in my job.

    • Asalaamualaykum AmericanMuslim,

I must remind you that I am not a scholar or a learned person, I am just a layperson.

The hadith above states: '... time limit of no more than forty days for trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hairs and shaving the pubic hair', and does not refer to the trimming of the beard. So I do not know about the beard and you should consult this matter with a learned person/Imam/Mufti insha'Allah.

With regards to your other questions, again, I do not know the answers and yes you would need to log in and submit your question as a separate post insha'Allah.
