AS SALAAM WALIKUM,

I always see water in my dream so I kindly request you to tell me what does it mean? Is it good to see water in dream or bad? Please answer in the light of Quran and Sunnah.

  1. Salaams,

We are not qualified to give interpretations of dreams or speak on the symbolism of a particular aspect of a dream. I personally am not aware of any ayat or hadith that talk specifically about water. There is a book called Ibn Sireen's Dictionary of Dreams That goes into some detail describing dream elements, but these should be understood with caution if not being explained by a qualified dream interpreter. Usually, a safe bet is to try to take the meaning you feel personally in your heart, and ask Allah to clarify His guidance to you so that you can act upon it accordingly.

  2. Just out of curiosity, If he learn anything about his dream, will he be not accountable to shirk or polytheism? I mean future teller or dream teller? Kind of confused? please clear my confusion ?

    • Salaams,

I'm not sure what you mean, brother Farrukh. No one should be going to a fortune teller about a dream. In Islam, there are supposed to be qualified scholars and shaykhs who are skilled in this practice, but these days they are hard to find because they are so rare. In the absence of such a person, asking anyone else should be avoided. He can still take his own meaning from it insha'Allah, since he is the dreamer himself.

For instance, if I have been struggling with a particular sin, and I have a dream where I am fighting an opponent and win, I might feel this is encouragement to keep fighting because I will eventually overcome it. It's my own feeling about it which tells me that, and sometimes that's the best "interpretation" anyway.

    • Salamualaikum,

Brother Farrukh, I think I know what you mean.
No it wouldn't amount to fortunetelling. Because Allah's Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said in an authentic Hadith:

Dreams are one out of the forty-six aspects of Prophethood.

Allah can guide His believing slaves through dreams, and even give glad tidings. And once a dream has been seen, it is no more a hidden thing or that of Ghayb, except that its interpretation is in itself a separate field of knowledge, which, Allah gives to only some people.

The world of dreams is something out of our thought and our idea. Only Allah Knows what it is, how it is, and why it is.

May Allah enable us to obtain the most correct Knowledge

      • Thanks Waseem Bhai.

But, Should one disclose his dream or keep it to himself?

        • If a dream is a good dream (you feel happy after seeing it), you should disclose it only to those who you trust, and should thank Allah for it.

If it is a bad dream (you get sacred after seeing it), seek Allah's refuge from it and do not disclose it to anyone.

    • Salamualaikum,

Brother, as sister Amy said, we can not interpret dreams appropriately.
Interpretation of dreams is in itself a separate field of knowledge. Allah gives it to whoever He Wills. It is well known that Imam ibn Seereen had such knowledge.
Today, I believe the elites among the scholars are capable of interpreting dreams.

As far as seeing water is concerned, the interpretation could differ based on the form you see it in, the state, the place where you see it, and also the way you lead your life. That is to say that the interpretation could differ from person to person. So, it is very complicated to interpret dreams.

However, I can recall a Hadith of Allah's Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, which I do not think is applicable here, but has a mention of Allah's Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam drawing water from a well. See how Imam ash Shafi'i interpreted it.

Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam narrates his dream, when he was standing at near a pool and was drawing water from a well. He pulled out as many buckets of water Allah wished, and then Abu Bakr took the bucket and drew out one or two buckets of water, and the Messenger said, "...and there was weakness in his drawing – May Allah (swt) forgive him."
The Messenger continues narrating that Umar then came and took the bucket. He mentions, "I have never seen any strong man among the people, drawing water with such strength as 'Umar did and when he left the pool was full of water and splashing."

Imam Ash-Shafi'i (may Allah fill His grave with Noor) gives an interpretation to this dream; he says, "The dreams of the Ambiyaa are a form of revelation. When the Messenger said, '...and there was weakness in the drawing of Abu
Bakr..", it means that Abu Bakr's time in khilafa will be very short, and that he will be busy with the 'Harb of Ridda', and so he is not going to make a lot of openings; so he is not going spread the water all over. The water here is a symbol representing the religion of Islam. Abu Bakr was only khalifa, a little over two years and did not get the chance to spread out the religion very far. Ash-Shafi' continues by saying Abu Bakr's khilafa was not as long as the khilafa of Umar and that Umar devoted his time in khilafa, to
      spreading out the message, jihad
against the enemies of Allah (swt) and spreading the deen of Allah (swt). And that is how the water filled the pool and the water was splashing out." And so this hadith is considered as an indication that Abu Bakr is the khalifa and he will be followed by Umar. (end quote)

Do not worry about the dreams, and just concentrate on your Deen and your Dunya.

        • Assalaamualaikam

We are not able to interpret your dream for you. Dreams may mean something or nothing, and only you can tell if this dream was significant for you.

If you require additional advice about your situation, please submit your question as a new post for publication rather than as a comment on an existing post. That way it can be published and answered in turn, inshaAllah.
