Wael's Answer:

Dear jeddahbased, As-salamu alaykum,

Yes, I have exactly what you need.

1. A Healthy Diet

First, eliminate fatty, greasy and fried foods from your diet. No fast food, and no empty calorie foods such as potato chips, cookies, cakes, candy, ice cream, etcetera. Your diet should consist of healthy proteins such as grilled fish, turkey and chicken breast. Lean beef is acceptable as well but in moderate quantities. Eat lots of vegetables, especially spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and other green vegetables. Whole grains such as brown rice are good as well, but only in moderate quantities. Cut way down on simple carbohydrates like white rice, pasta, and bread - in fact, try to eliminate them altogether. Also eliminate fat-filled foods such as cheese, mayonnaise, and butter.

If you are from the subcontinent, watch out for the sauces. Spices are great - in fact spices like curry, turmeric, pepper and others are powerful antioxidants and can speed up the metabolism, encouraging weight loss. But watch out for sauces with oil or cream. Those should be eliminated.

Most likely you are putting too much on the plate. Reduce your portion sizes by about 30%, and do not eat late at night as it all turns straight to fat.

See this page for a lot of good information on eating a healthy diet:

Easing Into a Healthy Diet

So, here is the wazifa part. Before you eat say "Bismillah", then after each bite is chewed and swallowed, say Alhamdulillah. This will cause you to slow your eating, which will allow you to feel full sooner, and thereby eat less food.

But make sure you stick to the guidelines I have given above or it will not work!

Following this kind of a diet will not only lead to weight loss. You will have more energy, you will feel better, you will be at much lower risk for almost every disease known, and you will increase your possible lifespan by Allah's will.

2. Daily Exercise

Start exercising at least one hour every day. Vigorous cardiovascular exercise is best, such as walking briskly on a treadmill, or riding a cycling machine. If you have a local gym and they have step class or other cardio classes, those are great for losing weight.

Also add some strength training exercises at least twice a week, in other words weight lifting. If you are a woman and you have visions of huge men lifting hundreds of pounds, that's not what I'm talking about. I mean lifting light dumbbells, doing various exercises for your arms, shoulders, chest and back. Don't worry, this will not make you muscular or bulky. It will tone your muscles and help you to burn more calories by increasing your metabolism.

This can be done at home as well, with little more than a swiss ball and a set of light dumbbells.

This page has a lot of good information about simple strength training exercises that you can do at home with minimal equipment, or at the gym. You won't see all the info on the front page, but make sure you click the links to see specific exercises and exercise plans:

Weight Training 101

Now, here's the wazifa part: when you are exercising, as you are increasing the difficulty of the exercise (for example warming up or increasing the speed on the treadmill), say Allahu Akbar. Repeat this as often as you can without getting out of breath. As you are decreasing difficulty (or, if you are weight training, taking a break between sets), say SubhanAllah, repeating it as often as you can.

This is from the Sunnah as Jabir said, "We used to say Allahu akbar when we went up a high place, and subhanallah when we went down a valley." (Bukhari)

A Warning About the Concept of Wazeefa

You might think I am being sarcastic with my advice above. Not at all! I am really quite serious about the weight loss advice, and also about thanking and praising Allah which is a part of the Sunnah and something we should do every day.

But I admit I am being somewhat tongue-in-cheek when I call it "wazeefa".

In fact I do not approve of this concept of "wazifa" or "wazeefa". From what I understand, this is a practice found among Muslims in certain parts of the world. Apparently there are so-called shaykhs who claim, "If you say this phrase or dua ten times every day, Allah will give you a promotion," or something like that. Whatever it is you are seeking in life, they "prescribe" for you something to say every day in order to get it.

My concern is that we are treating Allah as if He is a vending machine. If you put in the right number of coins, out pops your reward. It doesn't work that way. This idea of wazeefa sounds a lot like superstition to me. It sounds like typical Indian numerology or astrology with an Islamic flavor.

I think it would be better to dispense with this term "wazeefa" altogether and use the word "dua" as the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught us.

Dua' is powerful and can achieve many things, but it's important to stick to whatever the Prophet (pbuh) taught us and not invent anything new. If we claim that a dua' can achieve such-and-such, we must have evidence for that from the Sunnah.

But even when it comes to dua', when we want something we do not make dua' then sit back and wait, doing nothing, for something magical to materialize. We say our dua' then we make our very best effort in the matter, doing everything we can.

Islam and the Science of Weight Loss

The same is true in your case. Say your dua' to Allah. For example you might say something like,

"Oh, Allah, help me to become a healthy human being. Help me to care for the body You have given me, which is an amanah (a trust) from You. Give me the strength to improve my diet, and to exercise every day. Let me not become vain but let me be humble, dedicating my work to You, and showing my gratitude to You for all Your favors."

Along with this dua', put forward your very best, sincere effort to improve your diet and to exercise.

I have given you the keys to the kingdom of health, my brother/sister. It's not a mystery. The science of weight loss is very well known. You must burn up more calories than you take in. It can be summarized in five words: "Eat healthy, move your body." The only thing I have added to this formula is our Islamic consciousness that everything good we have (food, health, opportunity) comes from Allah, and that all strength lies with Allah, and that everything we do is dedicated to Allah, and that we strive for sincerity and purity in all our actions.

  1. No carbo hydrates, strictly avoid them.

Dieting is great, but even if you have lost the weight you intended to lose, stick to a healthy diet plan.

Try to avoid rice, pasta and potatos and eat a lot of salad, vegetables and fruit. I think that in many

societies in our world, we need a healthy diet and a radical change in our nutrition.

It is not sufficient to lose weight. If you want to keep your weight, you have to be consistent and

eat healthy things. Even when you are pregnant, don't listen to the people who tell you to eat twice

as much or unhealthy things. Eat more than normal, but healthy things. A radical change in your nutrition

will solve your problem. The stomach is the door to all diseases and I wish you good luck in your weight loss

    process.

    Jazakallah

  2. Just to add a few tips:

    - Drink luke warm water instead of cold.
    - Drink your beverages atleast half an hour before or after your food.
    - Eat fruits before your meals, not afterwards, otherwise the fruits do not digest and go to waste.
    - Eat your latest meal by 8pm, not like myself - I eat at any time, even if I return from work at midnight. Tis very bad, very bad indeed!!
    - Be sure to eat Breakfast.
    - Do not mix your meats.
    - And as the Sunnah advises, leave one third of your stomach empty.

I used to find running on the treadmill so utterly boring and painfully strenuous, that I'd focus on this grid in front of me with 300 or so little squares in it. I'd pick a phrase, either SubhaanAllah, Alhumdulillah or AllahuAkbar, or 3rd Kalimah and my aim would be to recite something for each square in the grid and only when I finished the whole grid, could I stop running. I haven't run for years now so the muscles are not happy (!!).

Although, I like saying SubhaanAllah and AllahuAkbar when I step down/into my car, down/up the stairs etc. Its just nice to know that atleast part of me is God conscious. Such simple things, even if they are robotic at first, they make you feel like you're doing something right.

Sis - do take Wael's advice seriously. All too often we go looking for something uniquely different and exciting to pray and do etc, but we don't need to go searching for such things, thereby making life hard for ourselves. If we look close to home, we already know what to say and do, its so simple and so easy. Allah has made things very easy for us.

  3. Wazifa is strong means of getting out of any difficulty, in other words we are taking Allah's help in removing our problem whatever it may be, so those who say no need of wazifa for getting slim or getting fat are far away from Allah's power. Allah has power over all things , how much big it is as mountain or how much small it is like a fly.
so asking Allah anything is ok and reading wazifa for it is also ok. Those who think that we don't need wazifa for minor things are far away from truth and think that Allah will not listen to a person who wants to get slim. Indeed Allah will be more happy as the person has asking Allah's help in minor thing like reducing weight. We should rely completely on Allah for each and every thing, whether it is small or big. Regarding reading any wazifa in some numbers , it is imp because we pray five times not six times, we fast 30 days in ramzan not 40 days, so there is a rule to read wazifas in numbers. like 101 times, 21 times, 41 times. there is nothing wrong in it. In my mind comes a wazifa for getting slim as obesity is a disease. so the right wazifa is the one read by Hazrat Ayub A.S when he was sick. Ayahs 83-84:

"And Ayub, when he cried to his Lord, (saying): Harm has afflicted me, and Thou art the most Merciful of the merciful."

"Therefore We responded to him and took off what harm he had, and We gave him his family and the like of them with them: a mercy from Us and a reminder to the worshippers."

    • There is no evidence from Quran or Sunnah for wazifa. The tool that Allah has given us for asking His help in any situation is DUA'. That is how Muslims ask for Allah's help. Through Dua'.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The dua' of every one of you will be granted if he does not get impatient and say (for example): `I supplicated my Rubb but my prayer has not been granted'.''
      [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

I can bring many, many more proofs about the power of dua'. This is the method given to us by Allah and His Messenger to call for help. Let's stick to the Sunnah and not invent new things that have no basis in deen.

      • I think you misunderstood wazifa word, actually wazifa itself means to do zikr. the only difference is you called it dua , some call it wazifa. To recite some ayat is called dua by some and zikr by some and wazifa by some people , the concept is the same, reading something from quran or allah's name for removing some problem is known as wazifa in other words zikr. now the dua of ayub a.s is from quran , so reading it means reading zikr , or reading quran. So to recite it a number of times constitute a name as wazifa or zikr. Actually the way is how you look at it. now if you want every proof of wazifa from quran and hadis, then you proof of wearing a cap for namaz from quran and hadees, prophet never wore cap like muslim nowadays do. The prophet used to wear turban on his mubarak head but nowadays the arabs dont wear it. ie they wear saudi gotra. which is not proved by quran and hadees

        • No, it is not the same. People who believe in wazifa think that there are set formulas that will guarantee a result. If you say such-and-such 1,000 times, you will get an A on your exam. If you say so-and-so 500 times, you can cure cancer. This is all nonsense. Allah is not a vending machine. You cannot manipulate the outcome of events by repeating something a prescribed number of times.

Muslims utilize DUA. When one says a sincere dua to Allah, he does not know the outcome. Allah may respond affirmatively, or he may give him something better, or he may give him barakah in the aakhirah. Or, if the person is living a sinful lifestyle, Allah might not answer. This is why dua is only one aspect of worship. The worshiper must also live a righteous life, and complete his other 'ibadah.

DUA - YES. Comes from Quran and Sunnah.
Wazifa - NO. Made up by people.

  4. I agree with Wael that there one has to work hard oneself to lose weight or do anything one wishes but one has to have the help of Allah in all matters. Indeed even my ability to type this message just now is because God has granted me the capability both mental and physical to do this. I feel that wih faith in Allah's help one can achieve anything and also that there are certain duas in the quran which do help by their specific power in certain matters. One such dua is the 16th verse of Surah Luqman. Whenever I have misplaced something I have read this and indeed even just thought of reading it and I have found the item I lost. So certain prayers do work and one has to know which is effective for what purpose. The Quran is a miracle and guidance for us all. It is for us to seek Allah's help in the form of this guidance.

On the other hand I agree that making bargains with Allah and treating him like some shopkeeper or business partner is wrong. One needs to ask him with a sincere heart and believe that he will listen to us and of course our prayers should be reasonable and not ones that will harm us or others. Allah knows what is best for us.

I would like to thank Bintehawa for the excellent advice she has written.

I will also ask my daughters to recite the prayers about making one's task easy before they start their exams. Allah rewards our hard work, if He wills.
