QUESTION
Dear Bilqis,
Assalamu alaykum,
I am a converted Muslim and I want to know why it is not recommended
to listen to music or watch TV as other Musims say. If it wasn't
good then why should we have Islamic videos, CDs, cassettes,
etc. They say if we want to have them then we must not watch
or listen to haraam things. Your ideas or explanations will be
very much appreciated.
"Want to know"
BILQIS ANSWERS:
Dear "Want to know",
I believe you answered part of your
question yourself. We want to avoid "haraam" or unlawful
things in whatever form they may take. So videos, CD's, cassettes,
television, movies, etc. should be monitored carefully for ourselves
and our childrens' sake. There are however many excellent things
of this sort on Islamic topics which are both educational and
entertaining.
Since you are on the internet I will
give you a few addresses that should be helpful:
This site as the address indicates is
especially for new converts to Islam:
http://www.convertstoislam.org
This site is a topical index to different
aspects of Islam: http://www.ourdialogue.com/contents.htm
USC Muslim Student Assoc. Islamic Server
(covers Fundamentals of Islam, Islam and Society, Stories of
New Muslims, etc.): http://www.usc.edu/dept/MSA
Islamic videos, CD's, books, etc.: http://www.soundvision.com
I would also suggest (if you haven't
already done so), read through "Zawaj.com" for information
on all aspects of "Marriage in Islam".
Let me take this opportunity to welcome
you to Islam and encourage you to seek knowledge on your religion
as well as other fields of study. May Allah (swt) increase you
in Faith, increase you in Knowledge and grant to you the good
of this world and the next.
