Thank you Dr. Mattson, I've had the same thought many times. People come to Eid and they get browbeaten by the Imam, speakers turned up to ear-splitting volume, for an hour. How is that appealing? It's like a punishment, instead of a day of celebration.

I remember one Eid that we had here in the Central Valley. We were outdoors in the sun, and as time went by it started to heat up. The Imam was giving a khutbah denouncing all the people who only come for Eid, and he shouted, "Are you starting to feel uncomfortable under the hot sun? The fire of Hell will be much hotter!"

It makes me laugh now to think of it, because it's just so ridiculous to treat people that way.

As you said, we need to encourage them, give them good news of activities happening in the Muslim community, and welcome them into the fold of Islamic brotherhood and sisterhood.

People nowadays are dealing with issues like economic stress; the suffering and violence occurring in some Muslim countries like Iraq, Palestine and Pakistan; family problems; and a general feeling of insecurity and oppression.

We need to offer these people hope. Show them how Islam can ease their spirits, unite their families, and heal the Ummah. Give them a glimpse of the beauty that is Islam, and its potential. That's what will bring them back.

Also remind them of their obligation to Allah, and the gratitude that we owe Allah for all His gifts. All Muslims, no matter how weak their faith, have that underlying consciousness of Allah, and we can reach them through that Insha'Allah.
