Wedding Customs Around the Muslim World

Muslim wedding customs

THE SOUTH AFRICAN WEDDING

Weddings in South Africa (Cape Town) are normally a whole day affair. The wedding begins with the nikkah at the local mosque, after which the whole procession, which includes the groom and all family and friends (men only) go the the girl's reception where they serve breakfast.

After breakfast the bride and her bridesmaids go to the groom's side for a lunch. Later on they take photos and from there onwards proceed to the bride's side for a tea or normally a supper.

Just before Maghrib the groom sends some members of his family (ladies only) to fetch his bride and take her to the wedding house. These ladies are normally hadjis who have been on pilgrimage and they are decked in all their finery with midoras that they buy in Mecca. These ladies then speak to the parents to say that the groom has now come to fetch his wife and as they leave the reception they call salawaat on our Nabi (SAW) and go on their way.
