Praying Gives Me Nightmares

dreams dreamt

Salam,

A  few years before I got married I was not very religious and did not pray all the time. However, when I met my husband and then the years before he became my husband he encouraged me to follow my religion on a more regular basis alhamdAllah.

Anyways my query is that after I started praying frequently and fasting and reading the Qur'an and so on, I found that I was having so many bad dreams. For example, I feel like something bad is coming at me and my husband's way and when I try to recite prayers in my sleep I sort of forget the prayer or I jumble the prayer and have to start all over again. Then I feel kind of frozen like I cannot move my body, and recently this has been happening every single night. My husband is always waking up to find me reciting prayers and unable to move. Then when he turns on the bedside light. I feel normal again.

Then for a few days I decided to not pray my five Salats to see what would happen, and honestly, I slept just fine. No bad dreams nothing. But of course being practicing, this is not an option for me to not do my Salats everyday so I started again and the bad dreams have come back!

Does anyone know what this is about?

Thanks In advance. Salam.

  1. As salamu alaykum sister Hannan,

If your wudu is invalid before going to bed, perform it.

Before going to sleep pray surat 112, 113, 114, ayat al Kursi and al Fatiha and pass your hands through all your body. This prayers will protect you during the night, insha´Allah.

While you are on bed you can keep reciting ayat al Kursi. Shake your blankets and say Bismillah, before going to bed. Sleep on your right side.

When you wake up or when you feel frozen say:"Audhu billahi minash shaytanii rajeem"

When you get dressed or undressed, say: "Bismillah".

There are many duas you can read before going to sleep or waking up during the night.

On top of the page you have a link on duas too.

Make the last meal two hours before going to bed.

    • Sister about fasting, remember that we need our nutritional needs covered and many times nutritional weaknesses manifests in strange ways, then be conscious of this too and take care of your physical body as well as all the other bodies, insha´Allah.

  2. Assalamu alaykum Sister,

Some of that used to happen to me. I guess sometimes Allah wants to wake us from our sleep due to wrong sleeping position, may be He wants you to get up and pray tahajjud.

Sister pray a few rakats if you wake up at night and sleep again.

Insha allah, I hope this helps.

    Salaam,
    Your brother.

  3. Dear Hannan, Asalaamualaykum,

This is simply shaytaan at work. It's shaytaan's mission to stop us from doing anything that brings us closer to Allah, so he is doing his best to frighten you now so you stop praying Salaah. If you understand and believe this very simple truth/fact, you will find your remedy.

Keep perservering in your Salaah and in your other acts of worship. Not only will this make it harder for Shaytaan to frighten you, but more importantly, Allah will make it easier for you to overcome your nightmares.

Remember though, that we are always tested by shaytaan in every walk of life. So when you manage to improve concentration in your Salaah and when you begin to feel less shaken by your nightmares, shaytan will try to bother you in some other way. The stronger we become, the more we are tested. Our tests will hopefully strengthen us and makes us learn new things about ourselves. And the stronger and closer we become to Allah, the weaker shaytaan becomes.

'Think of your nightmares as blessings in disguise' - This may sound strange to you, but I say the same thing to a very close friend of mine aswell. She too has terrible nightmares, they feel physical and are very hellish. They frighten her extremely and she only feels better when she gets up and prays, but the issue here is she becomes lax in prayer. You have nightmares when you do pray, but the concept is the same: you must both persevere in Salaah in order to strengthen your 'forcefield' against shaytan.

A few tips for you and us all:

    1) Set your standard. Say to yourself, 'No matter what happens, come rain or shine I am going to pray my Salaah'. Now everything else has to work around that.

    2) Ahadith & Duas for before sleeping:

    - ‘When retiring to his bed every night, the Prophet (saw) would hold his palms together, spit in them, recite the last three chapters of the Qur’aan and then wipe over his entire body as much as possible with his hands, beginning with his head and face and then all parts of the body, he would do this three times.’

    - The Prophet (saw) also said: ‘When you are about to sleep recite aayat-ul-kursiyy till the end of the verse for there will remain over you a protection from Allaah and no devil will draw near to you until morning.’

    - The Prophet (saw) also said: ‘Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, those two verses shall be sufficient for him.’ [Al-Baqarah (2): 285-286]

    - ‘If one of you rises from his bed and then returns to it he should dust it with the edge of his garment three times for he does not know what has occurred in his absence and when he lies down he should supplicate: ‘In Your name my Lord, I lie down and I in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous servants.’

    - The Prophet (saw) would place his right hand under his cheek when about to sleep and supplicate: ‘O Allaah, protect me from Your punishment on the day Your servants are resurrected.’ (three times)

    3) When you have a nightmare and you awaken, of course you will feel frightened. But keep what I have said here in mind. Think: 'I am not going to give in to this silly nightmare, its just a feeling and it will not overcome me. It was just in my subconcious and absolutely nothing can harm me without Allah's Will - and Allah most definitely Loves me and He(swt) Protect me'

    4) Ahadith & Dua for when one awakes::

    - Say: 'All Praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us and unto Him(swt) is the resurrection. (Source: A - see reference below, or click on: http://www.makedua.com/display_dua.php?sectionid=1)

    - The Prophet(saw) said: 'Whoever awakens at night and then says: ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, alone without associate, to Him belongs sovereignty and praise and He is over all things wholly capable. How perfect Allaah is, and all praise is for Allaah, and none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, Allaah is the greatest and there is no power nor might except with Allaah. The Most High, The Supreme'. And then supplicates: ‘O my Lord forgive me,‘ he will be forgiven‘

Al-Waleed said, 'or he (S) said: ‘ and then asks, he will be answered. If he then performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted‘.'

So my dear sister, persevere, give the nightmares as less attention as possible. Do as Rasool(saw) advised, upon having a nightmare, dry spit to the left, seek refuge with Allah and turn to the other side, or drag yourself our of bed and pray. Incorporate as much of the Quran and Sunnah in your life and shaytaan will weaken and wither! InshaAllah, you will overcome this!!

    Remember this
'Shaytan feeds off our disobedience, so don't become food to shaytan. Instead start eating food that will nourish your own soul. Shaytan is the 'bacteria, the virus, the disease'. But stronger than the bacteria is the 'white blood cell': 'the rememberance/obedience of Allah. It fights back and protects you, so keep nourishing it by persevering in Allah's way.'

  5. I saw many night mares. I read Ayat ul kursi every time before my sleep and i pray 5 times daily and
still having night mares definitely its the work of devil to stop me from going to Allah's path

But i am not gonna leave my prayers cause of that. And i know Allah will help me thru this some how.
and may be its my stress that comes into bad dreams so all i have to do is think positive. Believe in Allah
and get negative thoughts out of my mind

    • saqib, we cannot interpret your dreams, but as a matter of general advice I suggest that you do your prayers, be in a state of wudu' when you sleep, and recite Ayat Al-Kursi before sleeping.

  11. Hi
I lost my nephew on wed 21 Feb 2018.
I started reading salad. I wasn't really a great uncle so I pray and do dua for him.
I never prayed for a few years and try to read 5 salah a day.
However last night I had 3 dreams which were disturbing but not scary one after th other.
I found this odd ad I haven't had these vivid dreams before of a horrible nature.
I just read fajr salah and I feel that my tiny doubts not in Islam but in the afterlife have gone and insha Allah it will make me stronger in my Islam.
hope that this helps someone who has any doubts and if possible do dua for my Solomon Khan. He was 18 and accepeted for university next year.
    Thank you

    • Asalamulakum,
I too have had the same scary dreams last night in my sleep. Some where I feel like I can’t move and some where things I love a lot are taken from me. Either way, I saw many people say the dream comes from shaytan as he is trying to keep you from doing good deeds. But it is the month of Ramadan and I got this dream?? So meaning shaytan is locked up and does not have the power to interfere with us. I really hope we can get some more input as to WHY we get these dreams because now it has come to my attention that there are others that have struggled with nightmares.
