Wael's Answer:

Wa alaykum as-salam brother Muhammad,

Congratulations on the birth of your son, and may Allah give him health, success, and guidance on the path of Islam and Imaan.

It seems you are asking for Istikhara based on the parents names and the baby's birth date. That is not the Islamic way of Istikhara. Making choices based on names and birth dates is astrology, and it is forbidden in Islam, as it is a form ofshirk (associating partners with Allah).

See this previous question and answer on this subject:

Istikhara for marriage based on birth dates and names

And also this one:

Also please see some of the articles listed at the top of this website to learn the proper way of Istikhara.

As far as choosing a name, as Mustapha commented below, you can choose any name that has a good meaning. Some examples would be the names of the Prophets; or any of the names of Allah with "Abd" (servant) in front, such as Abdullah, Abdur-Rahman, Abdur-Raheem, etc; or the names of the Sahabah; or any great figure from Islamic history; or the name of an elder relative of yours whom you admire and respect; or the name of someone who is important and dear to you; or a name whose meaning describes qualities that you would like your son to have.

And Allah knows best.

If any readers have some additional advice for this questioner, I invite you to post your comments below.

(O Allah), Guide us to the straight path; The path of those whom you have favored; Not those with whom you are angry; Nor those who go astray.

  1. assalam alaykum brother,My advice to you will be that you have to just choose a nice name for your son,a name with good meaning and inshallah he will be a good son.I would suggest my name, Mustapha. But always pray for your son for Allah to bless him in this life and in the hereafter inshalla as dua is one of the most important gift a father can give to his son,so make it a routine to make dua for his to your last day and inshallah he will be a good son to you,his mom and everybody else inshallah.

  4. my son name is Muhamad R***** P**** and his date of birth is **-**-2010. i just want to know that is this name is correct for him or if is not correct then what name or alphbet suit for him? Please reply as soon as possiable.

    • Brother,

In Islam, there is no significance of date of birth or alphabet when naming someone. This is something practiced by people of the Hindu and Sikh faiths. When Muslims name their children, the main thing to do is to select a name with a good meaning or one that is the name of a good person like Umar(ra); or at the least make sure the name does not have a bad meaning and is not the name of someone known to have a bad character, like 'Hitler' or 'Firaoun'. There is a sequence to the first name and family name. But apart from that, there are really no complex rules. Please click on the link below for a guide to Naming in Islam.

    • Syed, giving a name has nothing to do with the mother's name and birth date. That comes from astrology and numerology and has nothing to do with Islam. Just choose a name that you feel is good and has a positive meaning, and be happy with it Insha'Allah. Sabeen means "morning breeze", which seems like quite a nice name.

  6. Brother,

This practice of selecting a name is absolutely haraam, it is not from Islam. It is a hindu practice. You can choose any name you want for your child as long as it means nothing bad. Please see this article of the naming system in Islam: http://www.zawaj.com/muslim_names.html

  8. Assalamualaikam,my baby was born on 10 december 2011,i require names which good for her regarding health and prosperity.

    • razia, good names are good names, regardless of the birth date. Good names include the names of the Prophets, "servant of Allah" in all its variations - i.e. "Abd + name of Allah", the names of the Sahabah, Islamic heroes and scholars, etc.

    • Shan, the name is not based on the birthdate or time. That is bidah and is based on Hindu numerology. Instead just choose any good name from the Quran, the Prophets, the Sahabah, or any great Muslims of history.
