Can a Muslim man marry a Catholic girl?

Christian/Muslim Marriages

Can a Pakistani marry a catholic woman in Malaysia without the woman converting.  I read on a website that under Act 303, the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984 which first saw Royal Assent on the 27 of June 1984. Section 10 of the Act states clearly that a Muslim man may marry a woman who is Kitabiyah.

I also read one of your comment saying that it is halal.

So how does a couple like this go about getting married in Malaysia and registering the marriage? and what is the procedures and documents required?

Thank you and God bless

  1. Legally I believe a muslim man can marry a catholic girl, since she is of the people of the book. It is very important however to see the consequences for the girl. In catholicism, marriage is a sacrament, a holy act that can not be reversed. If the muslim man were to divorce his catholic wife, which is his islamic right, she would still in the eyes of her church (and likely in her soul) be married to him until she dies. She can never remarry but is forced to live the rest of her life in a kind of limbo, still "married" to a man who is not married to her. And the catholic church requires her to raize her children catholic. This of course a muslim man can not allow. Without his approval of this condition, a catholic woman might not get a dispensation to marry a muslim. And also, since marriage is a holy sacrament to catholics, polygamy is abhorrent to catholics. A muslim man who is married to a catholic and then chooses to marry more wives will have broken the sacrament and his catholic wife will regard such a marriage as a sacrilege. All this things should be considered, even if the marriage is legal.
