Can a woman propose to a man?

proposal,couple

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I have since my last post come a long way, alhamdolelah. I have met someone and would like to propose. Yet, being of Arabic heritage, it is culturally frowned upon when a woman proposes to the man... basically, the woman has to wait until the man proposes. I like this man a lot.

  1. Salaams,

Prophet Muhammad's (saws) first wife, Khadijah, proposed to him.....and he accepted. Needless to say, there are no Islamic prohibitions against women proposing to men, so regardless of how it might be viewed culturally, there's no religious basis for it.

    • I really think that you need to propose to this guy and stop depriving yourself of something that you deserve. Millions of people would love to have a girl like your propose to him. I know I would.

      Sallam

  2. Asalaam alaikum,

You'll need a wali for the nikkah, so you may want to find one now and have him take your proposal for you or use an alim to convey your intentions to this man, if you feel too shy to. However, what the other sisters advise is also acceptable.
