Islamic marriage advice and family advice

Can Sunni and Shia Marry?

I am 23 years old girl from a Sindhi family and I'm sunni. The boy I love is Shia and he loves me too. He is Muhajir and Naqvi.  My mom and dad know that I am into some Shia boy and they are angry with me.

Do you think I should leave him? As it's not easy for me at all and my happiness is only with him :-s  But I don't know what to do? I want to know:  can Shia and Sunni get married?

Is it ok in Islam?

  1. Bismillah.

Assalaamu alaikum sister Shadowy. Sorry to hear the difficulties you are going through. Your question is very difficult to answer as it is more of a fiqh issue, and we do not give fatwas here. You may want to get advice from a qualified scholar on this issue.
As it has been posted before on this website, please look at the following links on shia-sunni marriage questions:

    http://www.zawaj.com/askbilqis/is-nikah-between-shia-and-sunni-haraam/
    http://www.zawaj.com/askbilqis/sunni-want-to-marry-shiah/
    http://www.zawaj.com/askbilqis/im-marrying-a-half-shia/

I hope these help you InshaAllah. I also wanted to mention some relevant issues. I just wanted to add that If you are in an inappropriate relationship with this boy, please make tawbah and end this relationship and keep all further contact within islamic guidelines. (Not meeting unecessarily, if you meet it must in the presence of your mahram) I am not judging you, but this is very important just in case. I will assume that you are in love in halal manner.

I do not have anything against Shia, but one thing you have to take into consideration is the differences between you. These differences can be small or quite big. Now they are not a problem, as you are in love with each other and want to respect each others differences. But these differences can cause BIG problems in marriage later on. Especially when kids come along. So feelings aside, please think very carefully. Why do you want to marry him? Seriously think about that.

Here is a link for a good article a co-editor kindly sent me which will be some food for thought for you InshaAllah:
    http://www.muslimahsource.org/relationships/the-stupid-glass-slipper/

If this man associates any partners with Allah or partakes in any practices which contradict the Qur'an or Sunnah I strongly advise you not to marry him. If he doesnt, and you have considered these things but still not sure then maybe do Istakhaarah. Details on this canbe found at links on the top of the page. In general, your life may be easier and more peaceful if you marry a nice, practicing Muslim man who is Sunni (the same as you).

I pray that Allah swt guides you to make the right choice.
    Ameen

  2. NO ITS NOT HARAM !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'M A SHIA MUSLIM AND I WORSHIP ONLY ALLAH (SWT) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LA ILAHA ILALLAH MUHAMMADUR RASOOLULLAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WANT EVERYONE TO UNDERSTAND THAT BOTH SHIAS AND SUNNIS ARE MUSLIMS.
THERE ARE SOME REALLY PATHETIC AIRHEADED, LONG BEARDED BAFOONS TRYING TO
DIVIDE MUSLIMS. DON'T BE MIDLEAD BY THEM.
ALL MUSLIMS WHO RECITE SHAHADA ARE MUSLIM.
SHIAS DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT ASSOCIATE ANYTHING WITH ALLAH (swt)!!!!!!
WE JUST BELIEVE THAT THE 12 IMAMS ARE THE TRUE LEADERS AFTER THE DEATH OF
THE PROPHET (saaw) LOOK IN SAHIH BUKHARI AND SAHIH MUSLIM AND YOU'LL FIND
NARRATIONS ABOUT THE PROPHET (saaw) MENTIONING IMAM ALI AS HIS SUCCESSOR.
IF ANYONE CALLS A SHIA A KAFIR THEN THEY WILL BURN IN HELL FOR DENYING THEIR
    FELLOW MUSLIM BROTHER/SISTER.
YES ITS OK FOR YOU TO MARRY A SHIA MUSLIM. WE'RE ALL MUSLIMS.
    END OF DISCUSSION !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ALLAHU AKBAR !!!

    • It is good to hear what you said but there is no shia or suuni division.. its only one.."muslim" who submits his / her will to Allah. Had there been any nation known as "shia" our Prophet SAW would have guided / told us about it. Nor you will find any hadith on Muhammad SAW passing on prophethood to Ali RA or Ali RA quoting himself as the messenger/prophet or having any share any divinity (Na-Aozubillah) (I do hear alot of shia people invoking ALI RA when in distress e.g. "YA ALI" (Na-Aouzbillah) << This is SHIRK!

Muhammad SAW is the last of all messengers & seal of prophets. There was, there is & there will be NO messenger after him. You do agree on what i just said?

  3. salam Sister,,

i m divorced and have a daughter of 4 years. i got love marriage with a person who was shia.. and i m sunni.
after marriage 2 different fiqa create problem for us specially in future for kidds. i want to make my daughter a pure sunni and he wants to become her a shia. so i got divorced and now i got custody of my daughter.
being a shia he always abused our Sahaba & KHulafa-e-RAshidein. and i couldnt bear it so i leave him.

PLZ its my sincere advice to u .. forgot him as it is hard to do it but do for ur future and ur kidds.

    • Assalam-Alaekum,

JazakAllah sister for sharing. It would have taken so much courage but you did it. And only Allah can reward you to prefer islam over worldly things.

      regards,

  4. How's his faith?

  5. @Editors: I didn't know if faith based debates are allowed. If they are good if they are not please feel free to delete my post.

@Nawid: For a normal person you seem to have a lot of reference prepared :-).
    To your point
    [quote]
"WHEN MUSLIMS SAY "YA ALI" ITS A SIGN OF RESPECT FOR HIM. WE BELIEVE THAT
THE HOLY PROPHET AND HIS AHLULBAYT INSHALLAH CAN INTERCEDE FOR US."
    [\quote]

If you believe that on the day of Judgment anybody can intercede for you than brother you are wrong. If you believe in Quran? then its said in Quran (2:255) famously called Aya Kursi:

"Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."

No one can intercede, except Allah's permission. And don't tell me that you meant to say that Allah's permission. Because I know shias don't mean that.

As far as ghadeer Khum is concerned,do not follow islam by picking somethings and leaving others. Word Maula is used in many different contexts and it has many different meanings. As far as I know none of them means 'Imamat' or 'Khilafat'.

    regards,

  6. I do not want this post to become another endless debate about Sunni vs. Shiah. This website is not the place for that. Therefore I am closing this post to further comments.

Jazakum Allah khayr to those who have taken time to respond.
