AsslamuAliekum,

I want your kind advice for my 6 years old son. His name is Shazeb (not Shahzaib) Ahmed Murtaza. It seems like the name does not suit him very well based on his personality and various things I have observed. He was born in may 2004.

Can you please analyze his present name and give advice on a new name with meaning?

I will be very thankful for your advice and time.

JazakAllah

  1. Dear Shaz, As-salamu alaykum,

Do not change your son's name. He is already attached to it. It has become a part of his self-identity.

It would be good to change it if it had a bad meaning. But I looked it up and from what I could find the name Shazeb (or Shahzeb) means, "decorated king". A bit fancy and grandiose perhaps, but still nice enough. There's nothing wrong with it.

Give him a nickname if you like, something informal that his family can call him by. I cannot suggest one as I do not know him, or his character, or you.

  2. Hello,
A child's name is a gift from his parents. It is a beautiful name. The meaning is nice too. I agree wholeheartedly with Wael on this. Let him keep his beautiful name.

    • abdul hannan, from what I understand you married a woman who converted from Hinduism to Islam, and you want her to change her name, is that it? She can choose any good Islamic name that suits her. But changing her name will not affect her health.

    • She is not required to change her name since most of the Arab polytheists, after converting to Islam, didn't change their name. There is nothing wrong with Hindu names. Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia keep these names. I wonder why South Asian Muslims tend to deny their pre-Islamic heritage. I am strictly against it!

      • "new", actually several of the Sahabah (the companions of the Prophet pbuh) did change their names. The ones who had unIslamic names based on idol worship, changed their names. Also, if the names were harsh or violent, the Prophet (pbuh) often changed them.

The ones who had names based on animals or nature or positive human characteristics, kept them.

The meaning of the name is the criterion. If the meaning of the name related to polytheism or idol worship, then it must be changed. If it is a good meaning that does not contradict Islam, then there is no need to change it.

I don't know what you mean about Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia. They all already have Islamic names.

    • I'll be waitin for the answer, bcz some ppl say u can change, and some say u can't change :).

      • This is no big deal! Just file an affidavit in the nearest police station and give a short advertisement in local newspapers that you are changing your name. It has nothing to do with Islam..:)

  5. I'll be waiting for the answer, bcz i don't know, some ppl say u can change and some ppl say u can't change your name, bcz ur parents has given it to u, but my parents didnt decided my name, my grandparents did 🙂

    • Tayyba,

I shouldnt be answering your question till you write in properly, but it won't take long, so I have replied.

If you read the articles on naming, you'll see that you can change your name even if your parents named you. Your surname should signify who your father is so that should remain unchanged. Your name has a nice meaning, so why would you want to change it anyway?

      Various spellings/meanings of your name:
      Taybah Pure.
      Tayyibah Good, pleasant, agreeable.
      Taibah Repentant.

.SHE IS VEEK BY APPERANCE BT MASHAALLAH VERY ACTIVE N FINE .
BT EVRYONE IN MY FAMILY SAYS THT THIS Z NOT A GOOD NAME FOR HER AS MY ELDER DAUGHTER IS FAT n beautiful...PLZ HELP ME ...
TELL ME SHOULD I CHANGE MY DAUGHTERS NAME????

    NAME: Eshal Zafar
    date of birth:27-may-2012

i vill be vating fr ur reply

    • SABA, the name "Eshal" apparently means "flower of Paradise". It is derived not from the Quran but from previous scriptures (I don't know which, exactly). There seems to be some debate about to spell it in Arabic or Urdu - some say ayn, yaa sheen laam. In any case, the name is perfectly acceptable Islamically and if that's what you choose to name your daughter it's fine. I'm disappointed at how you refer to your elder daughter - "fat not beautiful." That's unkind.

  7. Hi there, my name is Hira and its a very famous name because of garr e hira. But i come to know that the meaning of my name Hira is "Darkness" or the "secret place". I am 22 years old , I have good life mashallah but Throughout my life I experienced difficult times. I get angry very fast and very quickly gets irritate. So , now as my name meaning sounds so mysterious I feel like to change my name. Its a request to guide me to the right direction what should I do?

  8. Please guide me that i can give me son name Muhammad Hannan Arshad.
    is it correct ?
or correct name is abdul hannan.

    Please verfiy me ASAP.
    Thank you.
    Muhammad Arshad.
    Faisalabad.

    • Muhammad, Al-Hannan is not one of the names of Allah, so Abdul Hannan is not an appropriate name. Also, who do you want to give him the middle name Hannan? Who is Hannan? The child's first name should be his given name (the one you give him); his middle name should be your name, i.e. Muhammad; and his last name should be the family name. So, for example, you could name him Ahmad Muhammad Arshad, or Abdullah Muhammad Arshad, etc.
