Descendant of Prophet’s Family

dua help mercy questions why

What are my responsibilities as a descendant of the prophet's family?

Sallam brothers and sisters and jazakallah for your time

first i want to thank people who manage this site and the kind brothers and sisters who makes the effort to respond to issues. you have truly helped me a lot.

What i wanted to ask is. I am gillani sayad, both my parents are sayad. I know that we are from the prophets family mashallah and we cannot accept zakat. but is there more i should know?

The reason why i ask this is because my ristay never follow through and i was wondering is it because I am only supposed to marry a sayyad? ive heard only sayyad can marry sayyad but was not sure or didn't care but now im beginning to wonder about it because whenever i agree to a risth it never works out!! EVER!!

Secondly I know we are blessed to be from the prophets lineage but do we have other thing? like can we see the future from dreams? do we see djinn? (im not claiming to have these its just I heard from some people someone from the prophets line can see these things and I was curious about it)

Jazakallah

Allah hafiz

  1. Salamualaikum,

I understand Sayyid. But What is Gilani? Does it point to Shaikh Abdul Qaadir al Jeelani? I am not aware of this. And I was just curious.

My sister, you are aware that a descendant of Rasoolullah does not accept Zakah.

I am not aware of any other difference. They are normal human beings like the others.
They should not accept Zakah because we have this mentioned in the ahadeeth.

I have a friend who is a Sayyid. He says there is a proof for his lineage (he knows his lineage) that he is a Sayyid. And he behaves just like me or anyone else, with a difference that the ignorant innovators made a shrine for his father when he died and they probably worship his father, A'oodhubillah.

On being asked why he did not stop them from doing so, he says the people did not let him.

You say you are Sayyid. But are you sure about it? My uncle used to speak about some people who claimed to be Sayyid and their claims were futile. I am not saying it is the case with you, but just make sure you are...

No you do not see Jinn, if others can not see and you can not see the future in any way, except until Allah Wishes so. And this is the case with a non Sayyid too.

There may be people among the descendents of Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, who are Kuffar. What about them? Are they called Sayyid too?

So, you are just like any other human being with no difference between yourself and the others.

This is what I know. The speciality you have is that you do not take Zakah. If anyone else knows about any other proven speciality, they will insha Allah mention.

    • thank you brother i didnt realise my question was posted i didnt recive any emails. anyway jazakallah....yes i ahve also met innovators the reason i asked my question is becuase a man (he was my GP) asked me if i could communicate with djinn (astakfillulaah) and he asked me to try . i told him to be afaid of God and i made sure to never make appointements with him!

i dunno why people have strange perceptions of my family? they ask us to read dua with them and one person evemn said make me a promise to never loose contact with me? weird ?? and he was a nonmehram so i did not speak to him!!

i think i mean to write jeelani not gilani. we do ahve proof of our linage.

its jsut as i thought we dont accept zakaat other than that were all normal.

      jazakallah

      alllah hafiz

  2. Salam.. I am a descend of the Prophet al7amdulelah, and I would like to give me 2 cents on this..

i don't know what is a gillani? can u explain it to us more?

Yes we can't accept zakat or صدقة (charity)... if some1 says " this is my صدقة to you, you can't accept it.. however you can accept presents/gifts.. )

About the issue of sayyad marrying non.. well it is still being debated.. I read articles about how it is forbidden.. i read articled how it is allowed. so i don't know myself. What i do know is that some people (like my family really want me to marry a sayyad).. This is to keep the lineage of the Prophet in our blood.. Some, like my friends, don't even care about this things.. It depends on the family, on how they'r brought up by Their parents, on how they understand and see this issue..

And you can try to check the lineage you know.. i have this certificate, where it shows that I'm number 36 or so from the Prophet. Im not being boastful, I'm just stating that it's nice to know your lineage as this will bring you closer to the Prophet and Allah as well, isA..

Again, about the marriage thing, there is a Lot of different fatwas about it.. I can't give you a specific answer for that, sorry.. If anyone else can help, this is MUCH appreciated since this is a very hard topic for me as well

Among the benefits of being descendant (from what I heard), is that in sallah, when we read

    From hadith: [An-Nasa'iy/ 1292, sahih]
    اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa`ala ali muhammad

Ya Allah, salawat to Prophet Mohammad and his family..

So we are in that group, since we are in the family..

About seeing jins, no I have never heard of it..

And basically we are the same as them, but this should motivate us to be good more, because this is such a blessing..

From which country are you from if I may ask?

    • jazakallah sister for your time and response. im from england british born and bred but parents from paksitan.

      allah ahfiz

  3. I'm a bit scared to add, but as I read

"Sayyads (descendants from the family of the Holy Prophet, pbuh) are entitled to more respect, though they are equal in the eyes of Allah."

so about Waseem wrote "No difference between yourself and others" the judgement is entirely up to you

  4. Sister Mira, Salamualaiki,

Your reply scared me that I had said something wrong. I was confused. (May Allah forgive me if I have said anything wrong). I have very little knowledge about this matter.

So, I consulted my Shaikh after Salatul Jumu'ah. I asked him:

What is the difference between a Sayyid and a non Sayyid, apart from the Zakah and Sadaqah matter?

He said there is no other proven difference, for the REAL sayyids, (some people claim to be Sayyid, but are not). And there is no other difference found in the Sunnah.

I asked regarding marriage of a Sayyid to a non Sayyid. He said it can be done. He gave an example of Ali bin Abi Tablib (Radiyallahu Anhu), who married one of his daughters to Umar bin al Khattaab (Radiyallahu Anhu), who was not a Sayyid.

Enough as a proof, isn't it?

Jazakillah for giving me the opportunity to learn.

Regarding what you said "This is to keep the lineage of the Prophet in our blood"

I heard from one of my other Shaikh that the family spreads through daughters and not sons. Because all the sons of Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam died in childhood (Radiyallahu Anhum), and whoever is Sayyid today, is from the offspring of his daughters: Fatimah, Ruqayya, Umm Kulthoom and Zaynab (Radiyallahu Anhunna).

So, insha Allah, you can marry a non Sayyid.

    And Allah Knows Best

  5. Sory if I scared you. So sory. And thank you for your explanations. It helps a lot. Shokran

  6. Wait, we'r offsprings of prophet's daughters? What do you mean? If a girl sayid mary a non, then the lineage wil stop (according to the birth certificate) but from what I understand from what you wrote (correct me if im wrong) if a sayid girl marry a non, her kids wil also consider descendants becaus they'r from the girl?

    • Thats what I meant, when I mentioned the words of the Shaikh.
If you marry a non Sayyid, your children will be Sayyid, insha Allah.

      And Allah Knows Best

      Muhammad Waseem

      • How's that possible? cause girls get their husband's last name and so do their daughters. or does this rule apply to sayad girls only?

anyhow, i believe and agree with what you said earlier. cuz Allah doesn't differentiate between any muslims except who's most pious. the most high in the eyes of Allah are the ones who are most pious.

@mira and about girls getting married to syed's only to save the family blood, really?. can you please quote a hadith or quranic verse where Allah has commanded us to save the family blood? is it more important to save the family blood or to marry a pious muslim?. there's no "caste" system in islam. This is what i've been taught from day one.

        • sallam

you mary inherit someones surname but your blood and genetics are from both parents so how are you not sayyad?

          Allah hafiz

  7. Sister Naseem,

A girl does not get her husband's name. She is called by her father's name according to the Islamic Sharee'ah.

    Consider the following references:

“Call them (adopted sons) by (the names of) their fathers, that is more just with Allaah…” [al-Ahzaab 33:5].

And the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Whoever calls himself by other than his father’s name, will be cursed by Allaah, the angels and all the people." (Ibn Maajah -Saheeh by al- Albaani).

Yes the children get the name of the father. The children of Fatimah Radiyallahu Anha and other daughters (Radiyallahu Anhunna) of the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam are the grand children of Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and from his family, right?
They are Sayyid. And the people who are Sayyid today are offspring of Prophet's daughters (this is what I believe).

So, it is possible, per me.

well, I must say that I am not sure about this matter.

    And Allah Knows Best.

    • I just called up‎ ‎the Shaikh who had said that the children would be Sayyid.
Asked him for a clarification. He said: "the children will be sayyid, but they will be called by their father's name"

Alhamdulillah, I am now quite clear about the matter.

      • so being sayyid has more to do with being a descendent and not the caste itself.. that makes sense, thank you 🙂

sayyad isnt a caste its a family line jazakallah brother waseem you explained it well mashallah!

I THINK YOU HAVE NOT READ THE LAST SERMON WHERE THE PROPHET SALAHAUALAHAIWASLALAM HAS DECLARED ALL ARE EQUAL-REGARDING THE ZAKAH AND SADAQA IT WAS DIRECTLY FOR THE PROPHETS FAMILY-
THIS ABOLISHES YOUR CLAIM OF SUPERIORITY IF ANY-
All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.

i have never claimed to be superior. i had quesitons so i consulted this website and mashallah there are some very knowlageble people who explained things properly. there is no need to be rude this site is for people seeking help and knowledge ! not everyone knows everything.

i have proof of my lineage but i do not wish any help from you jazakallah

  9. Syed Means the descendant of Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wasalam peace be on him through His Beloved Daughter Hazrat Fatima Raziallahu anha May Allah Pleased be with her and Hazrat Ali Karramallahu wajhahoo May Allah Brighten his face.

Gilani means a Descendant of Hazrat Abdul Qader Jeelani or Gilani Hasani wal Husaini,a Great Sufi Master of Qadriya Tareeq. His lineage from his Mother and Father was from both the Blessed Sons of Fatima tuz Zahra raziallahu anha Hazrat Imam Hasan and Imam Husain raziallahu anhum ajmaeen.

  10. As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

We have no castes in Islam.

    As I have said before:

This Syed / non-Syed distinction is artificial, as are the extended distinctions of Quraishis, Khans, Chaudhurys, etc, etc.

Besides which, I suspect that the vast majority of those claiming to be "syed" are not. Many people have elevated themselves to the status of syed over the centuries, especially wealthy people and rulers who wanted a justification for their status. If one cannot prove their lineage by documenting their ancestors all the way back to the Prophet (sws), then it's meaningless.

Furthermore the word "Sayyed" was used by the Arabs as a title of respect, having nothing to with lineage. It was the equivalent of "Sir". So I suspect that when the Arabs went to India, the people heard this title being used, and adopted it to indicate importance.

So the issue is very confused.

A writer from Pakistan has mentioned that:

"Its a socio-cultural taboo based on Hinduistic cultural imprints of caste system. This has been further complicated by confusing it with age old tradition of considering woman a tribal property. Her chastity was deemed violated even if she was married to a lower caste individual. Hence a Syed was made equivalent to Brahmin or Khashtri not in religious sense but in socio-cultural order to match contemporary Indian society. This act had silent veneration by then Muslim elite and Clergy. Therefore its a de facto / all-encompassing rule passed on to generations -- considered ethical, understood to all and sundry, having no validation whatsoever from Sharia Law."

Personally I find it to be funny when people speak of having "Arab blood", "African blood", "Viking blood" or whatever. The components of blood are the same in everyone: red cells, white cells, platelets, and plasma. If you look at blood in a microscope you won't find any cells wearing a turban and thobe.

Most importantly, status before Allah is according to Taqwa. What matters is faith, character, behavior, imaan, ihsaan. Not lineage.

    • Jazakallahu Khair brother.

    • alhamdulillah , finally someone spoke some sense about all the 'sayyid' n 'non-sayid' unnecessary discussion. well said brother wael.

if you are sayyid ( which ever route you got the surname), before you start feeling superior to others , just ask yourself - will that get me to Jannah? if you are geting the answer as "no" then start working on what will get you there. if the answer is yes- then you seriously need to rethink your thinking!

we will meet our creater as muslims not sayid- we will inshallah enter jannah as muslims not sayids. prophet Mohammed( pbuh) will intervene for us as muslims not sayids.

may Allah help us look beyond the surnames and lineage.

PS - all the sayids i have met in my life they all think they are somehow a bit more superior/ pious/purer then others

      • "we will meet our creater as muslims not sayid- we will inshallah enter jannah as muslims not sayids. prophet Mohammed( pbuh) will intervene for us as muslims not sayids."

All very true. Jazak Allah khayr.

  13. Right. Get the lineage. If you are not aware of it, then ask your parents or grand parents, and any elderly person alive in your family.

And sister, even if you aren't Sayyid, you need not worry. To Allah, the distinction between the slaves is by Taqwa, as it comes in an Aayah of the Quran.

  14. Salamualaiki sister Nadia,

I know Shaikh Abdul Qaadir al Jeelani. He was a Hanbali scholar. And was of pure 'Aqeedah.

But the people strayed and have given him the position of Allah. They worship him and do duas to him. Whenever they are in need, they do not call upon Allah. They say:

Ya Abdul Qaadir Jeelani, al Madad.

They forget that he is not al Qaadir, but Abdul Qaadir.

May Allah save us‎ ‎and all the Muslims.

I do not know Gilani Hasani wal Husaini. But you said he is a Sufi saint.
The deviation of this sect is not hidden. Their practices are similar to that of the Hindus.

They dance like crazy in the name of connection with Allah Subhaanah, just like the Hindu babas dance and make their followers dance, and also drug them.

Some of them say that Allah is in them, Astaghfirullah. One famous man from this sect in the history called Mansoor al Hallaj said:

Ana al Haqq (meaning I am Allah)

    Astaghfirullah.

You should save yourself from such and follow the Quran and the Sunnah of Rasoolullah, striving to earn the Pleasure of Allah Subhaanah, until you die.

I know I can not paint everybody with the same brush. But I thought was necessary to mention the general practices of this sect.
I am sorry if I have hurt anyone but being a Muslim, it is my duty to warn about what my follow Muslims do not know.

    • Look at this extremism. I was in a Masjid waiting for the sun to rise after Fajr, to perform Salatul Ishraaq.

The person sitting next to me had his hands risen. He was saying: Baba, please help me. Please do dua for me.

Can you imagine? Instead of doing dua to Allah, sitting in the house of Allah, someone calls upon other than Allah.

On being asked, he agreed to not do so again. But some days later, I heard him say the same things again.

Astaghfirullah. May Allah save us and keep us under His Mercy, and never let us stray

  15. i like what someone said about

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action.

This is My favourite line actually, because some people Do think they are maybe a bit (but Still) superior because of the descendants...

As I mentioned before, this issue is still being debated.. up to us to find the truth. Allah knows best

i would like to attach a file that shows my family lineage but i dont know how to do it here.. maybe brokenbrain can..

  16. sallam

i really jsut want to say that i put out my questions was i was genuinly unsure if i should only be marrying a sayyad or if i was doing something wrong. the djin and seeing the future was something someone asked me so i posted it up here to see if anyone knew anything about it.

i feel upset that all i wanted was some answers but i feel attacked by some of the posts. i have never claimed to be superior to anyone. i dont walk around pround, as pride is a sin! i dont try and elevate my position and lower others. i am not like this alhumdolillah that is not how i was raised nor will i ever raise my futher family to behave in such a dighusting manner.

    Allah hafiz

  17. I know what u mean brokenbrain.people might think we r being boastful when they ask, we answered yes,we are descendants.but they dont feel the uneasines when we answred them cos we dont want to put them down. Personally I dont think its wrong if u mary a non. A pious non is much better than a non pious sayyid. Are u married? Are u having trouble from ur family cos of this? Cos my family initially r against marying non.but now they soften up. My sis on d other hand search for a pious sayid.alhamdulilah hapily maried with kids. We r not superior nor they r inferior.its just an honor n blessings 🙂

    • sallam sister

thanks for your reply. my family are not against me marrying a nonsayyad however any ristah i agree to never works out and i was wondering am i doing something wrong?

im shocked how harch some people have been on this post thats all. people write in when they need knowledge and help and i feel that this post just took another path and everyone just went off on one!

ive just left it up to God inshallah ill get married one day.

      • Sory,whats ristah?
Sis,sadly to say in my hometown, some people wont go to a wedding if a syed maryng non. They dont agree on it. Thats y sometimes im a bit uneasy bout this

      • Sister, just do not worry. You are a Muslimah and Allah knows it. You do not need to prove it to anyone.

Regarding the proposals not working, it maybe because Allah has kept someone better for you. Just keep the good hopes from Allah.

  18. Akhi Ali,

Somehow, I didn't read this comment of yours.

I know you have much more knowledge and experience of life, than me, but I must say that your reply was quite rude.
Brother, the debating approach that you adopt, does not work everywhere.
There are situations where they are preferred, while there are situations where they are strongly discouraged.
Some discussions require politeness and patience.

    This was one such situation.

And brother, there is no point in accusing someone without proof. And the poster is a Muslim, whatever name she gives herself. And Allah's Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has said:

"A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection ."

Tafsir ibn Kathir has the following about the matter, under the Aayah 12 of Surah Hujurat:

Allah the Exalted forbids His faithful servants from being suspicious, which includes having doubts and suspicions about the conduct of one's family, relatives and other people in general. Therefore, Muslims are to avoid suspicion without foundation.

O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicion is sin. Allah the Exalted forbids His faithful servants from being suspicious, which includes having doubts and suspicions about the conduct of one's family, relatives and other people in general. Therefore, Muslims are to avoid suspicion without foundation.

The Leader of the faithful Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "Never think ill of the word that comes out of your believing brother's mouth, as long as you can find a good excuse for it.'' Malik recorded that Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said that Allah's Messenger said, ْ

Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the worst of false tales; do not spy on one another; do not look for other's faults; do not be jealous of one another; do not envy one another; do not hate one another; and do not desert (shun) one another. And O Allah's servants! Be brothers! The Two Sahihs and Abu Dawud recorded this Hadith. Anas said that the Messenger of Allah said,

Do not shun each other; do not ignore one another; do not hate one another, and do not envy one another, and be brothers, O servants of Allah. No Muslim is allowed to shun his brother for more than three days. Muslim and At-Tirmidhi collected this Hadith, who considered it Sahih.

I pray that Allah gives us the most correct knowledge

  21. Assalamualaikum.... I didn't really know that a 'syed title' and the lineage are still important for some people.

I am from Indonesia and I've never heard about a syed selling mineral water to bully people and twist their belief. Maybe they are not really "the descendants".

My mother carries the prophet saw lineage from her mother (died young) and she knew. But I did not know that until her relatives came to gather information to track down the lineage of a famous Islamic scholar living in Java in 18th century, who is believed to be the descendant of Fatimah ra.

Our "syed" big family have mixed blood because our ancestors came from many places around the globe.
And we the daughters are given freedom to choose the man we like for marriage.

Alhamdulillah, I am a muslim girl and I feel free.

    Wassalamualaikum
