Dreams are haunting me!

dhikr zikr

Assalamo Alaikum.

First I would like to say that I am so glad I found this website for help. I have been looking for a source to go to if I have problems or concerns.

Anyways I am 13 years old girl, and for a few years now I have been getting dreams about ghosts. I'm not going to go into any detail, but the ghosts are always trying to kill me in my dreams. I wake up in the middle of the night after my dream, all shaken and scared.

I don't know what to do. My friend joked about it, but I took it seriously. She told me that is a sign that someone is going to murder me in 2012.

I asked her again this year, and she said it was a joke. I was really mad then. I do pray and read Quran in my bedroom. And  I do say Duas and stuff before I go to sleep. But, only sometimes that stops me from having nightmares.

Please, if you have any tips and what might be the meaning to this, tell me. Jazak Allah!

  1. Dear young sister Muslim4eva,

There is nothing to worry about. Your friend was just teasing you by making that silly joke. No-one knows when we will die apart from Allah(swt).

As for the dreams we have, the good ones are from Allah(swt), the bad ones are from shaytan and some are from our own thoughts. We are not qualified to interpret dreams, so I cannot guess what your dream means. But what I can tell you is that there are no such thing as 'ghosts', as far as we know, there are humans, animals, angels and jinns. Sometimes in our sleep though, we do see things that do not make any sense and that can make us feel very frightened. But it is time wasting to try to figure out what they mean since Allah alone knows what they mean - if anything at all. Your dream probably means nothing. Perhaps you are stressed about something, are watching scary movies or eating late before you sleep? Sometimes these things trigger nightmares. It could be none of these things, but nevertheless, there is really nothing for you to worry about : ).

The best thing for you to do is to keep up with your five daily Salaah, recitation of Quran, keep yourself clean, and busy with good things. Before you go to bed, do the things that Rasool(sws) recommended such as:

    1) Perform Wudu

    2) Clean your Bed: Abu Hurayrah (ra) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sws) said, 'When one of you goes to bed then with the edge of your lower garment (or the edge of the duvet) clean the bed, what were you to know what is in the bed.'

    3) Remember Allah: because the Messenger of Allah (sws) said that, 'When a person enters his bed (to sleep), an angel and a devil surround him. The devil whispers 'Your awakening will end in evil' and the angel says 'ends in good.' But if one sleeps after engaging in remembrance of Allah (The Exalted) the angels will protect him throughout the night.' So recite the following:

    - By reciting The Mu’awwithat: 'Aisha (ra) states that, 'When the Messenger of Allah (sws) would lie down every night on his bed, he would raise his hands in the supplication position and pray. He would recite Surah Ikhlas (Qulhuwallahu Ahad) three times, Surah Falaq (Qul A'oodhubi Rabbil Falaq) once and Surah Naas (Qul A'oodhubi Rabbinnaas) once and blow on his palms and wiping his hands over his blessed body where they could reach, this was done thrice.'

    - By reciting Ayatul Qursi: The Messenger of Allah (sws) said, 'Whoever at the time of sleeping recites Ayat-ul-Kursi will themselves be protected and his neighbour, to the extent your neighbour's neighbour, and the houses surrounding will be protected too.'

    4) Do not lay on your stomach: The Messenger of Allah(sws) never laid on his stomach and if he saw anyone doing so he would wake them up by his feet and be very upset. Ya'eesh bin Tighfat Gafari (ra) narrates from his father that he states, 'I was reclining in the mosque on my stomach (due to chest pains), suddenly a person nudged me with his feet and said, 'To lie down like this is disliked by Allah (The Exalted).' When I turned to see who it was, I saw the Messenger of Allah (sws).'

    5) Lay on your Right: Hudhayfa (ra) states that, before the Prophet (sws) went to sleep he would place his right hand under his cheek and pray this supplication: 'Alla-humma Bis-mika Amu-tu Wa-Ahya', meaning 'O Allah (The Exalted) with Your name I die and I live.'

You can read more about manners of sleeping at: http://www.zikr.co.uk/content/view/67/108/

    6) Morning and Evening Dhikr: Also do your morning and evening dhikr: http://www.zawaj.com/askbilqis/dua-in-islam/morning-and-evening-dhikr-part-1/

Insha'Allah, before you know it, these nightmares will be a thing of the past and then you can be the one to tease your friend instead ; ).

  2. Waalaikumsalam my dear sweet sister,,

It is perfectly fine my little innocent sister. That is just a dream and don't let it stress you out. SisterZ had already explained it in detail and given you good advices, Ma Shaa Allah. Try to practice it and your fear will In Shaa Allah go away. I do sometimes get such a dream and indeed it bothers me and makes me feel scared when I tried to sleep again. However, I feel calm when I have ablution and then recite Quran before going to bed. Allah is always there dear, we also have angels who are always with us so never be afraid, you are never alone.

Try to practice the advices offered by SisterZ and you will In Shaa Allah have a sound sleep without having any nightmare ever again. 🙂

    May Allah always protect you.

  3. Jazak Allah. I will Inshallah do those things that SisterZ told me bout. 🙂 Jazak Allah kharun for your advice.

    Allah Hafiz

  4. Salaam sister

I agree with what everyone has said.

Another thing that no one has mentioned yet... I recommend you to do ruqiyyah. (ruqiyyah is a form of medication we can do on to ourselves or someone more knowledgable some one who specialises in this. there are some verses from the quran that is recited on you to see if you are not being afflicted by anything, But please bear in mind the whole quran is a cure.)

unfortunately I do not have hadith on this but majority will say that this highly recommended by mohammed (pbuh). This medication and cure was a sunnah of the prophet.

I recommend this because this was not a one off dream, it has been consisting for a few years. It may not be nothing serious InshaAllah but there is no harm in checking it out. Allah knows best.

Dont be scared sister, be strong!! Fear the creator, not the creation.

Read the following for protection from evil (read at the end of every fard salah:

fajr - Ayatul Kursi ONCE, 3 Quls x3

zuhr - Ayatul Kursi ONCE, 3 Quls ONCE

asr - Ayatul Kursi ONCE, 3 Quls ONCE

maghrib - Ayatul Kursi ONCE, 3 Quls x3

esha - Ayatul Kursi ONCE, 3 Quls ONCE

    • Brother,

We do no need anyone to perform Ruqiyah for us, we can do it ourselves and infact if we do all the obligatory and recommended acts of Ibaadah, this is a protection itself. The Prophet(sws) recommended us to seek protection with Allah through these means ourselves and to avoid going to a 3rd person to perform Ruqiyah on us. Doing it ourselves means we have reliance upon Allah alone and is always the better way.

      • Salaam sister,

Firstly I am a sister Lol

Yes I understand we do not "need" to get anyone to do it for us, that's why I mentioned we can do it on ourselves. I recommended to go to someone more knowlegable (someone with knowledge about the symtoms and someone that can recite with correct tajweed) also bcoz its the same dream for a few years. I recomended both options. And for sure we shall have reliance on Allah but ruqiyyah is just a mean. I am not talking about the dodgy ruqiyyah that requires wearing Tabiz and such (this I am totally against) :s Allah knows best.

It was just an opinion of advice. That's all.

        Wasalaam sister

        • Salaams Sister : )

I know you meant well. I used to recommend people go to other's for Ruqiyyah too, until I learned about this hadith at a course I did. I should have explained it to you before, but I was in a rush to get to work:

Bukhari Volume 007, Book 071, Hadith Number 606. Narrated By Ibn 'Abbas : Allah's Apostle said, 'Nations were displayed before me; one or two prophets would pass by along with a few followers. A prophet would pass by accompanied by nobody. Then a big crowd of people passed in front of me and I asked, Who are they Are they my followers?" It was said, 'No. It is Moses and his followers It was said to me, 'Look at the horizon.'' Behold! There was a multitude of people filling the horizon. Then it was said to me, 'Look there and there about the stretching sky! Behold! There was a multitude filling the horizon,' It was said to me, 'This is your nation out of whom seventy thousand shall enter Paradise without reckoning.' "Then the Prophet entered his house without telling his companions who they (the 70,000) were. So the people started talking about the issue and said, "It is we who have believed in Allah and followed His Apostle; therefore those people are either ourselves or our children who are born in the Islamic era, for we were born in the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance.'' When the Prophet heard of that, he came out and said. "Those people are those who do not treat themselves with Ruqya, nor do they believe in bad or good omen (from birds etc.) nor do they get themselves branded (Cauterised). but they put their trust (only) in their Lord " On that 'Ukasha bin Muhsin said. "Am I one of them, O Allah's Apostle?' The Prophet said, "Yes." Then another person got up and said, "Am I one of them?" The Prophet said, 'Ukasha has anticipated you."

          • No problem. Jazakallah khair for that hadith.

It actually reminds me of sheikh abu hanifas lecture about Jinns and black magic. He mentioned that people of jannah are those that never ask and only give Allah knows best. So he used ruqiyyah as an example, that people should offer it to us rather than Ask. But ofcourse each situation suits different individuals. Its a big topic this one lol we cud go on and on.

I pray everyone is well in best state of Imaan. Ameen.

    • W/Salaams Sister,

Yes, maasha'Allah Al-Kauthar are an excellent organisation and as you know are linked with Mercy Mission too. The Divine Protection is one of the courses I did with them last December taught by Shaykh Hacene Chebrani. Some of the things you mentioned were talked about in that course, here is a summarised version of the notes I made: http://www.zawaj.com/askbilqis/dua-in-islam/morning-and-evening-dhikr-part-1/
