Dua (supplication) can change taqdeer (fate)?

prayer, dua

Allah is 'Al-Mujeeb' - The one who responds

Assalam O Alaikum  Dear brothers and sisters in Islam,

Since I was little girl; I used to hear that duas can change taqdeer (fate). My questions are:

1. What is the proof? I mean: how can I know something happened because my dua changed the course of a particular thing or was it really going to happen that way? Can someone show me a proof?

2. Websites say reciting "Subhan Allah wabay hamdehi, subhan Allah il azeem" is a very powerful dua that the Prophet (SAW) recommended to for accomplishing this objective. And then they claim it has to be recited 1000-2000 times and the dua will change taqdeer. I do not believe that - because the Prophet's (PBUH) hadtith and Quran to my humble knowledge do not give the number of times duas should be made because that would mean we are impatient and want Allah to fulfill our requests on demand like a drive through! All when He wants us to make dua and be patient for its results. Some people even feel that "permisssion" is required from certain human beings before the "common" man can recite these duas, which is shirk to me. Example of such a website:

http://sheikhamin.blogspot.com/2009/02/prophet-said-there-are-two-words-which.html

Serendipity.

  1. Sister i was never told dua could change fate only that when you ask Allah (swt) for something always add, if their is (khayr)good in it then i hope to see it but if their is bad in it then keep it away from me, i believe that is the best way to approach dua. Allahu yalam.

  2. There is a hadith that says dua changes destiny. However, I think people read too much into it. First, I think there are some aspects of our destiny that cannot be changed -- life span, marriage, our height, etc. Secondly and most importantly, as dua is a form of worship, it does change destiny -- our destiny in the Hereafter. The more we worship, the greater the reward in the Hereafter.

I don't believe that if you recite a dua 100 times or 300 times or 6000 times, you increase its effectiveness. Do you tell your mother 100 x a day that you love her? Presumably, if you tell her once, she gets it. Right? Similarly, if a child is hungry, does she have to tell her mother 500x that she is hungry before her mother responds?

No, dua does not change destiny. What will happen to you will happen because of God's will and what He has written in the Book of Decree. I, too, have believed since I was a little girl that with earnest dua Allah SWT will give you anything. I don't believe that anymore. I still make dua, but, I know in my heart that what I ask for is being stored for the hereafter. It is also said that with dua, Allah SWT averts calamities that may have been destined to come your way. So there is always a beneficial aspect to making dua.

    • Assalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh.

It is incumbent on all Believers to have faith and hope. Whether we make du'a 1 time or 1000 times, we should have hope in the Mercy of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'Ala. Just the same if we see no change as a result of our du'a, we must except the Qadr (as Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'Ala knows best). Making du'a with out belief and hope is futile, pointless. One can't say they're a Believer, and harbor reservations and doubts.

And your Lord said: "Invoke Me, I will respond to your (invocation). Verily! Those who scorn My worship they will surely enter Hell in humiliation!" 40:60

Everything in our lives was/is predestined. We have no idea what our Divine Decree is, which is why we strive.

And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it while he is a believer - then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated. 17:19

        • Wa Alaikum as Salam,

If what you have said us true, then you should not marry him. Islam gives you the right to deny it and even disobey your parents. If you need further advise, please post your question separately with more details. In sha Allah; we will publish it in turn.

            Here's the proof:

Allah's Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

"There is no obedience to the creation in disobedience to the Creator." (Musnad Ahmad)

    • Also...

And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying on his side, or sitting or standing. But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on as if he had never invoked Us for a harm that touched him! Thus it is made fair-seeming to the Musrifun that which they used to do. 10:12

  3. iagree that duas are accepted and if u use ur brain too much u wont get answers coz god is unique and his rewards are unique and brain is such a tiny thing to understand him and the dua done to him

    • @taz, please always note that GOD shud always be written in CAPITAL letters and when referring to HIM using a pronoun, use HIS, and not in small caps the way you did.

      Thanks brother

  4. Serendipity, you have good common sense. Forget about all these "wazifas" that say if you recite a certain thing 1,000 times, your Qadar will change. Such sayings have no basis in Quran or Sunnah. Allah is not a vending machine, where we put in 1,000 coins and the reward pops out.

However it is true that Dua can change Qadar. The proof is the statement of Rasulullah (sws), "Nothing repels Qadar but Dua".

As far as your question, "how can I know something happened because my dua changed the course of a particular thing or was it really going to happen that way?" - Sometimes it's obvious. I can think of specific things that I prayed for in my life, and I prayed for them fervently and often, and finally they came true against all the odds. It was very obvious to me that it was a result of my dua'.

But most of the time you probably won't know. You might ask Allah many times to give you success in this life and the next. But how do you know if a particular event is a result of your dua? Only Allah knows. The best answer is to thank Allah whenever something good happens, and be patient when something bad happens, and even if you do not see the result of your dua' then trust that Allah hears you, and that your dua' is answered in one way or another.

Also it's important to note that Allah will not give you anything that is bad for you.

I have posted an article, "Can Dua Change Qadar?" You can see it under the "Dua" heading at the top of the website, or go to it directly here:

  5. All was written down before we were even created, the big and the small. When we make dua , due to our supplication to Allah something changes. But that in itself too was already written and part of your Qadr.

    Get it?

    Was salaam

    • Thanks all, for your responses. I too feel like Sr. Precious Star as to what she has written in her last paragraph above - but I hope that one day very soon inshAllah I will start making duas the way I used to do.
When we use Allah's names in duas when we want to invoke some of his special qualities, do we say "Ya -name" or "Al-name" (eg Ya Wadoodo or Al Wadoodo)

    • There's a difference between Allah knowing something, and pre-ordaining something. Everything is written because Allah knows in advance what will happen. But that doesn't mean that Allah has pre-ordained everything, or dictated it, or forced it. We human beings have free will. Certain important events are predestined and we cannot change them. But most things in our life are left to our free will, and we can exercise choice. Dua' is also a powerful tool for influencing our destiny.

      • assalamu alaikum
but from what I know when Prophet (SAW) told about taqdeer he said that those who do evil do it because it is written in their taqdeer. I do not know anything where the taqdeer is referred to as the knowledge of Allah about the future rather the Will of Allah for us.

I mean I being born to my parents is taqdeer. It was written that my father will marry my mother and I will be their daughter. So, my mother's husband will be my father and vice versa. Now I dont think If my father married someone else I would have a different set of parents or I would have split in two different humans. It was all per-determined. Similarly if Allah has created anyone to be my husband he will marry me. Otherwise if marriage is not in my destiny I will never be married, no matter how much I suffer or try. Its my fate. I also read in a hadith, the pages have dried and the pens have been lifted, nothing can be changed.

  6. Dear users,I am not clear whether Dua can change destiny or not?Could any Mufti plz intervene and resolve the matter?I 'd be grateful.

    • Muhammad Suleman,

You have asked the same question that the original author of this post replied. Please read the answers already provided. As for a Mufti intervening, none of us who work on this site are Muftis.

  7. It is He Who conveys you on both land and sea so that when some of you are on a boat, running before a fair wind, rejoicing at it, and then a violent squall comes upon them and the waves come at them from every side and they realize there is no way of escape, they call on Allah, making their religion sincerely His: “If You rescue us from this, we will truly be among the thankful.” But then, when He does rescue them, they become rebellious in the earth without any right to do so. Mankind, your rebelliousness is only against yourselves. There is the enjoyment of the life of the world and then you will return to Us and We will inform you about what you did. (Surah Yunus: 22-23)

  8. He said: O my Lord! Prison is more dear than that unto which they urge me, and if Thou fend not off their wiles from me I shall incline unto them and become of the foolish.

So his Lord heard his prayer and fended off their wiles from him. Lo! He is Hearer, Knower.

And it seemed good to them (the men-folk) after they had seen the signs (of his innocence) to imprison him for a time. (Sura Yousuf)

  9. 2:200

And when ye have completed your devotions, then remember Allah as ye remember your fathers or with a more lively remembrance. But of mankind is he who saith: "Our Lord! Give unto us in the world," and he hath no portion in the Hereafter.
    2:201

And of them (also) is he who saith: "Our Lord! Give unto us in the world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and guard us from the doom of Fire."
    2:202

For them there is in store a goodly portion out of that which they have earned. Allah is swift at reckoning

  10. And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright (2:186)

  11. Aslam Alaikum evryone. I wnt t marry a guy we both love each othr bt thr r some family prblms so should I pray to Allah to give me that boy. So if tht guy is nt in my taqdir bt cn my prayers make him my lyf partner??

    • sister, my advice is to pray Istikhara, and then trust Allah to bring about a good result. Also, make dua to Allah to give you good in the dunya and aakhirah. Lastly, make some effort to make it happen. Talk to your parents and let them know your wishes.

  12. aoa!i am a girl and my parents engaged me with someone without even asking me. hes 15 years older than me. his father is my father's best friend. my parents know i am not happy because their is much difference in our way of thinking. and he has so much negative points which are not wrong but i dont like them. when i tell my parents they shut me up by saying you must like someone else but no i dont. i have tried everything but they cant break it because they dont want to disappoint their family.i cant run away! i pray for the breakup in my every prayers, does dua can change it?

    • As-salamu alaykum sister Sana. Forced marriage is prohibited and invalid in Islam. Of course dua' helps and can change things, but it's vital that you take action as well. You must make it very clear to your parents that you will NOT marry this man. So what if the family is disappointed? It's your life and one of your most important life choices. You have a right to choose your own life partner.

  13. As Salaam wa Alaikum Brothers and Sisters,
I have met a kind and generous gentleman who is not muslim, he wishes to convert and learn our deen before marriage. Should he be given this chance? Shall I take this as my test in life, to do a good deed and bring someone into Islam? Please advise as I am very confused.

    Jazakallah,
    Confused Sister

    • Your relationship with this man is inappropriate. Your "good deed" would be motivated by self-interest, and you might deceive yourself regarding his sincerity. I've seen many cases of women in your situation where the man converts for marriage, but he's not sincere and does not practice, and yet the woman overlooks all of that because of her desire to marry. Then, down the road, she finds that the marriage is untenable because the man is not Muslim in his heart.

If this man wants to learn about Islam and convert, he can do it by going to the local masjid or from books or online resources. Not from you.

      Wael
      IslamicAnswers.com Editor

      • As Salaam wa Alaikum,
Jazakallah for your response. He does not wish to learn our deen from me, it is true he wishes to convert in order for us to wed, however he will convert and learn via the masjid as you have suggested or a muslim organisation( Jamaitul Ulama ), we will have no relation until he converts and openly practices our deen. I am not fooled by a mere “ I will convert for you”…. it is true I am very confused and I ask Allah every single day to guide me and show me which is the path HE wishes me to follow… how do I know if this is a mistake or if Allah has sent him to be converted into Islam….

        • "we will have no relation until he converts and openly practices our deen."

Well, that's fine then. He can convert, and practice Islam for some time, then come to you with a proposal, and you can make a decision at that time. I don't see the problem.

          • Salam
I am nikkahfied.my father counseled me too much for this proposal.i had some objections but i couldnt stand against my fathers continuous counseling.
Now today im unhappy because i know i will loose my career n this was my main objection.
My question is if i got married to my husband, was it my fate (pre written) or my mistake that i didnt stand firm against my father? Could it be changed if i had struggled more or it had to be happen as it was my fate?
Kindly guide me.i might got some patience as my regrets are kiling me..

  14. Dr: i know i will loose my career n this was my main objection.

Why can't you continue your career? Are you married to your cousin? Are you going to move to another country?
There is no evidence to prove if every thing is pre-written or not.

    • Im not married to my cousin
Im moving to another country where getting into residency program is near impossible while in my home country i could easily become a consultant..
Do you think marriage is pre written?

  15. Dr: Im moving to another country where getting into residency program is near impossible while in my home country i could easily become a consultant..
Do you think marriage is pre written?

I know it is very difficult to get into residency in USA also. You have to study very hard. You can take some coaching classes that may you pass the required exams.

Also you should look for options like doing Master of Public health, Medical administrator training etc.
Search Internet for International medical graduate or foreign medical graduate...........

Personally I don't think marriage is pre written. Nowadays lesbians and gays are getting married in some countries.

Do you like the person you are getting married to?

  16. Its tough in US but its possible.i will go for US happily because there are chances while chances in canada to get into residency are almost nill.
I know i can do many other things in canada but to be a consultant is like a dream n its killing me..
The guy is my husband now and ofcourse i love him like anything. he is more important to me than my career is.but if i were married to another man i would love him the same..
So if im loosing a dream today is because i made a mistake..when i will see my friends getting into system my regrets will reach to the peak..
May i soon get patience from Allah..

  17. Taqdeer and tadbeer i.e luck and actions/deeds. Both are as useless, just like a human with one leg. Luck is all about time & space where deeds are the code of conduct placing us at right place at the right time. Dua is the faith in our actions and deeds converting in reality.

First part of your question is easy for you to understand. The way you send emails with delivery notifications and do either receive the reply of your choice or against your choice, or non at all. Here in dua delivery notification is your inner peace and control over what you are seeking in dua, this peace and control is the delivery notification and lately the conversion, non conversion or better gains of your dua in reality is a proof. Here the non conversion is always considered no reply, which is evident with our deeds and actions. In that case it's better to realize what we are asking and correct our deeds and code of conduct first.

Agree with you on the second part. Most of the religious fanatics explains the dua in a way that rather decreases the faith in confusion, at the end, then strengthening the faith in total confidence and control, at the end.

There is difference between dua and moujazat (miracle). Both has disciplines to follow to occur. For dua to be accepted we need to seek basic tenants with deeds and actions. Dua without deeds and actions leads to disappointment and weakens our faith. Now, for miracles to happen can only advice to touch the ultimate level of worship other then mandatory worship. I promise with confidence once you reach to that level your new dimensions shall unknot the beauty of devine and see the miracles in every friction of a second. Now, following the fanatics and run without disciplines of worship shall never lead you to miracles rather lead to put your own and other people life in gamble.

Wazaif are supplements to our basic mandatory worships. Exercising wazaif in consultation with religious scholar are always advised, as dua is linked with our deeds and actions and wazaif are more linked with unseen world. It's a tool to open your dimension to see the unseen, and disciplines are required.

Zikr, purifies our souls, dua brings more faith, happiness and peace, wazaif are to attain the devine beauty of creator.

Rest Allah knows the best, the most knowledgeable and knowing.
