Duaa for Someone to return to Allah

worship dua tasbih

Allah Most High says, "Truly, it is by the Remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest." [Qur'an, 13.28]

I wanted to know what is the proper way to make duaa for someone who is away from the path of Allah. I have a sibling who is derailed and is going away from the path of Allah. My sibling no longer prays salat, dress modestly, or listen to the advice of my parents. She is negative about Islam and chooses not to do anything in relation to Islam. I fear for my sibling because she is above 20 years old, and cannot be controlled with our words. I want to know how I can pray to Allah to guide my sibling towards HIS path, so my sibling can stop doing bad things and start doing good things. I already have prayed Salatul Hajah, so I wanted to know what else I could do so that my prayers can be answered.

  1. asalamu alaikum,

no one can guide anyone to the path of truth except by the will of Allah(swt), and no one can misguide anyone except by the will of Allah(swt) as we come to realize.

    Quran 2 186
And when My servants ask you (O Muhammad concerning Me, then answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My knowledge).
I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any partner).
So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.

ask Allah, during prayer to guide your siblings. Qiyam ul layl is also one of the best time. also sitting down and talking to them will be a good approach, answering their un-answered questions regarding Islam may help.

    ma salama..

Correspondence between the sexes is not permissible, because that provokes temptation and usually results in evil. If a man corresponds with a non-mahram woman in letters that are not seen by anyone else, that leads to many evils.
As for the love that stems from repeated looking, haraam mixing or correspondence, the one who does that is sinning to the extent that he does haraam things in his relationship and love.
Islam forbids a woman to be alone with a man who is not her mahram because of the fitnah (temptation) and bad things that result from that, such as attachment and the desire to look and touch, etc.
Sayyiduna Ibn `Abbas (RadhiAllaho anho) narrates
that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:

"If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah),
    ALLAH, Subhanahu wa ta'ala,
will appoint for him a way
    out of every distress
and a relief from every anxiety,
and will provide sustenance for him
from where he expects not.''[Abu Dawud].
    Istaghfar– seeking forgiveness
The two best duaa according to a hadith are ‘rabbana aatina fiddunya..(2:201)’ and ‘istaghfar’. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say istaghfar (seeking forgiveness) at least 100 times a day. In some hadith it is mentioned that he used to say astaghfar 100 times in one sitting.

We learn from the following verses that istaghfar is not just seeking forgiveness for sin and saving oneself form punishment, but it is also duaa for seeking strength and wealth.

"I said (to them): 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving;'He will send rain to you in abundance, 'And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.' "

    (Nooh- 071:010-12)

In the above-mentioned verse ‘rain in abundance’ is understood to be ‘rizk in abundance’ because rain has been the primary source of rizk for human beings in all times.

Today , I read the following verse today which also associates astaghfar with ‘good enjoyment’ and adding more favours:

Ask your Sustainer to forgive you your sins, and then turn towards Him in repentance - [whereupon] He will grant you a goodly enjoyment of life [in this world] until a term set [by Him is fulfilled]; and [in the life to come] He will bestow upon everyone possessed of merit [a full reward for] his merit. But if you turn away, then, verily, I dread for you the suffering [which is bound to befall you] on that awesome Day

    (Hood- 11:3)

The word translated here for ‘merit’ is actually ‘fadhl’ which means ‘favour of Allah’. This means whatever favour Allah has granted to a person, Allah will add more to it, for example some people are naturally good talkers and others are sharp observers, this verse means that Allah will add to His favours upon the slaves.

An amazing dhikr for all times can be the following two duaa from Quran which is seeking forgiveness for oneself and for ones parents. When we recite these verses from Quran, we get reward of 10 good deeds with each letter (letter not words) and we also get benefit of seeking astaghfar that are mentioned above.

Our Sustainer, Grant Thy forgiveness unto me, and my parents, and all the believers, on the Day on which the [last] reckoning will come to pass!"

Rabbana ighfir lee waliwalidayya walilmumineena yawma yaqoomu alhisabu

"O my Sustainer! Grant Thy forgiveness unto me and unto my parents, and unto everyone who enters my house as a believer, and unto all believing men and believing women [of later times]; and grant Thou that the doers of evil shall increasingly meet with destruction!"'

Rabbi ighfir lee waliwalidayya waliman dakhala baytiya muminan walilmumineena waalmuminati wala tazidi alththalimeena illa tabaran

    (Nuh 71:28
    Prophet (SAW)'s Prayers

    When in any difficult.....Recite:
    اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ وَأَصْلِحْ شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
"O Allah, I hope for Your mercy, do not leave me for even the duration of an eye blink (duration) and correct my total condition. Besides You there is none worthy of worship".

Allah, Blessed and Exalted, finishes the Hadithi Qudsi with the following words, O son of Adam! If you were to come to Me with sins that are close to filling the earth and you would then meet Me without ascribing any partners to Me, I would certainly bring to you forgiveness close to filling it. Again, the mercy of Allah is clearly demonstrated by His Divine Words. However, there is a condition. One must not associate any partners with Allah, which is shirk. And Allah does not forgive shirk and if one dies without believing in Allah alone as ones Creator, then he will be doomed to the Hellfire for all of eternity.

    • Are you pasting the wrong reply here? I could not figure what you are trying to advise here.

      • Assalaamu Alaykum Sister Sera

Brother Yousuf, given correct advice only

        Was Salaam

        • Wassalam,

No offend, people make mistake when they doing cut and paste in a hurry. I made a mistake by typing my name in the above post which should have address the poster.

Here the post said, "I have a sibling who is derailed and is going away from the path of Allah." Is it not permissible to corresponds with sibling? Of course NOT. It is highly encourage that siblings should help siblings especially we are so close to each other. That's why it makes me wonder about the response.

          • Assalam alaikum,

I agree with Sera that the advice doesn't seem to match the question as the OP is asking how to help their sister from leaving Islam.

  3. Salam Sera,

Do u know what lead the changes to her behavior? Will it be from your family culture practice? will it be the friends she associate with? Will she be under pressure of her peers? It does not take a day or a single event to turn her to become like that. All I can advise to you is continuing praying for her, support her by not judging her, communicate with her and most important is to show her you love and care about her.

Tell her you know that you have noticed some changes on her and you are concerning her well-being. Tell her honestly that no one on this earth can be 100 % sure he/she will be a practicing muslim until the day we pass away. However, one thing you can guarantee her that Allah is with us and he cares us no matter what happen to us. Encourage her to pray with you whenever possible. You lead the prayer if she makes excuses. Invite her to observe when you are offering your salat if she does not want to join you. You need to assure her that YOU ARE RIGHT HERE for her.

Sister, that's all we can do, it is in Allah's hand. It maybe just a phrase of people's life, inshallah, don't just pray but let her know you care. I need to be honest with you, there are lots of negative images and practice in my muslim community. It is hard to differentiate the line. I don't know where do you live, if you are living in a non-muslim country, it is quite hard to defend yourself too. Don't beat yourself up, I trust that you are doing your best to help.

  4. Assalam Walaikum Wa rahmatullahi Wa barkatuhu brother
My brothers and sisters have rightly said that " Whom Allah tala guides none can misguide, And whom Allahtala left astray none can guide"

But Alhamdulillah I remember a very good dua to bring someone to right path
Inshaallah it should work for you.

the dua is : Wa Hadaynaahumas-Siraa-Tal-Mustaqeem
It is 118 ayat of Surah Saaaffaat
