How to greet and smile when glancing Is Haraam? Simple by saying "Asalam-Alkum" or Peace be with you. That's not that hard Is It? There Is nothing wrong with the Intention but It all depends on the Intention to you saying the "Salaam to a person".
That's just my take on It, but again I'm Just me and that may or may not only apply only to me.
