Hypnotherapy and Islam

Assalam Alaykum,

I have been battling with depression and eating disorder for over 15 years now, I have tried everything to become healthy and normal but its been a continues battle. I have been in and out of rehab so many times that just when I think im over my disease I fall back into my depression and stop eating all together again.

I’ve been seeing a psychiatrist for little over a year now and she said that hypnotherapy would really help me recover from the emotions that I feel that leads me to the depression which also leads to my eating disorder. I need help!

My family deserves a better mother and wife, I have put my kids and husband through so much that sometimes feel they will have more peace if I just left them. The only thing that is keeping me from going through the hypnotherapy is that I heard it is haram and evil in Islam, even though my doctor assured me that it’s just being in a more relaxed state of mind.

I’m praying and begging Allah to give me a sign of what I should do. I would greatly appreciate it if you can help me determine whether hypnotherapy is against Islam or not.

  1. I don't see anything wrong with hypnotherapy from an Islamic perspective. In fact I know a Muslim hypnotherapist. It's just another form of treatment.

I'm sure you have tried and thought of everything over the years, but if you have not incorporated exercise into your daily regimen then I strongly suggest you do so. Regular, vigorous exercise has a powerful therapeutic effect. It's good for your health, and it causes the release of endorphins that improve your mood.

  2. Asalaam alaikum,

I found this link to be interesting to the topic.

Islamic scholars have come down on either side of this issue, but it involves an understanding that it is permissible provided that it brings no harm to the person. Since you are doing it to help yourself, and as long as you trust the therapist helping you, then because your problem is so dire, it becomes permissible for you to do so from what I understand.

May Allah (swt) help you in this world and the next.

    • Thank you so much for your quick reply and its a relief to hear such a positive response from you.
I have been putting hypnotherapy off for while now just to be sure that it is not against islam.
May Allah bless you all and inshallah i will get well soon.

  3. Hypnosis is not haram. You could literally use the Quran to hypnotize yourself and heal on a subconscious level. Read the Quoran and your depression will decrease. It is stated in the Quoran that those who read the word of Allah they will find peace and security.
