I have insomnia and cannot sleep

Sleeping in bed, under the moonSalams Everyone,

My problem is that I am suffering from a sleeping disorder called insomnia for the past 7 years.

I dont have a proper timetable for sleeping.  Sometimes it is at 12:00 am , sometime it is at 2:00 am.  Currently, I am unable to sleep before 5 a.m.

I am also a bit irritable because of this problem.

Is there any dua which I can recite so I wont suffer from this problem?

  1. Salam

Brother I'm too suffering from insomnia and what i found is that when ur body is tired u can get a very good sleep trust me in this

I too suffer from insomnia but like u I don't have a fix time sometime/days/months it might be 5am , it might be 2am or 3am

What u can do is that at the end of the day before sleeping just go out and walk for around 10th to 15 minutes and then try to sleep , though its will not be that effective initially but it will help u to control u insomnia

And also during your dinner don't fill ur entire stomach , leave some room

And never sleep during the day , even if ur tired

And brother if ur taking sleeping pills stop it I know it may sound the best option but trust me it is the worst

    Hope it'll help u

And other insomniac have a better suggestion plz help me as well

  2. Hahaha I did forgot about this post

Next time ill see the author and then post who knows it might be me Haha

  3. See ppl y insomnia is bad , u have an example for that

    • Hahahaha. May Allah increase your memory, and cure you from this problem.

Its true insomnia can cause poor concentration and focus

      ◦Difficulty with memory

      ◦Impaired motor coordination (being uncoordinated)

insomnia can be caused mostly by anxiety, being depressed, being under pressure like exams deadlines, changes in shift work, over thinking, etc

what you can do to help.

Perform you salaa and after isha keep a habit of doing dhikir (Lailaha illa llah) as much as you can.

      >Sleep as much as you need to feel rested; but do not oversleep.

      >Exercise regularly,

      >Keep a regular sleep and awakening schedule.

      >Do not drink caffeinated drinks later than the afternoon (tea, coffee, soft drinks etc.)

      > Avoid forcing yourself to sleep.

      Amna

      • I liked your suggestions amna

        • السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته.
Verily by doing dikr at the time of sleep as well as during day time, one can overcome insomnia. Allaah swt says that the believers find the peace inHis remembrance:
          الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

Those who have believed and whose hearts get peace by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."

So all the believers should do lot of Adhkar to get rid of anxity, sorrows, fear, depression etc

The following dua is also recommende. OUR BELOVED PROPHET PBUH used to beseech this dua.

O Allaah swt , I seek refuge in you from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.

Hope, insha Allaah it will help you out.

  4. Is there a root cause for it? Are you scared of something? I've had this on and off for some time as I get heartburn every night. So I get scared to sleep before a certain time. Its a bit better MashaAllah but what I am saying is if there was a trigger for your insomnia then try to deal with the cause. I know some people have developed it through strange experiences/ believing a jinn is disturbing them. So an e.g of how they can help it is to go to sleep in wudu. etc. Just a thought for you.

  5. Salaam brother, lol to the above.

You seem to have a chronic problem, you should really go to see your doctor to help you identify the root cause for your problem. Or perhaps you already have the answer to that, do you know what is causing you to stay awake...are you anxious?

I have a medical background, and have seen people with similar problems. My advice would be to practise good sleep hygeine. Ensure you have a nice relaxing environment to sleep in, try to reduce noise pollution, perhaps use ear plugs, eye shades etc to keep out the noise and light. Make sure your bed is comfortable, get a new mattress if you have to. Relax your mind before bedtimewhich means no mind stimulating exercises at least one to two hours before bed. Take a bath and have a nice warm drink, perhaps milk to help you feel calmer and drift off to sleep. If you ifind that you have been in bed for a 20-30 minutes or so and are still wide awake, dont stay in bed, get up and do something else and then come back to bed when you are feeling more tired and sleepy. Maybe do some reading before bed, I personally find that helps me drift off to sleep in no time.

Try to get your body to adjust to a sleep rhythm. Wake up early the next day even if you have had poor sleep and try not to sleep during the day. It may be hard but over a few weeks you should be able to develop a good sleep wake pattern and automatically start feeling sleepy at night.

Just some simple tips, I feel like I have just listed everything, but try the above if you havent already. Also in some cases the cause for insomnia may be physical so it is quite important you see your doctor, so that he/she can investigate further. There are also other techniques e.g. CBT etc that your doctor can offer to help you sleep better.

Last but not least read up on the islamic etiquettes of sleep...i sleep very well mashaAllah, and what I personally do before bed is read isha, speak to Allah and tell Him all my problems in the form of dua, read some quran if I can, I read sural falaq, ikhlas and nas and blow into my palms and pass it over my body 3 times (prophets sunnah) and read ayatul qursi, and then get a nice warm mug of milk and a good book and am drifting off to sleep in no time.

Anyway, hope it helps! Keep me in your duas please.

    • Excellent fabulous strategies u've told in your post. JazakAllah khair...but what about people who become addicted to drugs like benzodiazepines because of chronic insomnia? Do you have any suggestions for them?

  6. Salaams Trueblood

You are stressed or something is worrying you by the sounds of it. You need to eat properly and exercise and cut back on caffeine drinks. You need a routine to start your day and i hope this helps.

  7. recite sura Mujaadalah (surah no.58) that i did Alhamulillaah just few times and cured completely, i used to wake at 2 evrynite until 5,even if smtimes i got in bed at 1. its in the qitab/ book 'Remedies from the Holy Quraan'.

  8. Haha that was epic brother 🙂

    • Was wondering what was 'epic' here, then I saw the poster of the question on insomnia 'Truebloood' , has replied to his own post with a solution.......HAHAHA...and the cake goes to his second post, when it was pointed out to him, he writes "Hahaha I did forgot about this post .Next time ill see the author and then post who knows it might be me Haha"....... ROFL....HAHAHAHA..., can't stop laughing......

  9. I also suffer from insomnia..... Mines come and go. For the past 4 months I haven't been able to sleep until 5am! And due to that I wake up around 1pm the next day which is bad for health. If I try to wake up earlier I get nauseous, dizzy, and my heart races like crazy like I'll have a heart attack!!! I've even had to quit my job bcos of this. Because I was constantly dizzy at work. And I've gained 10 lbs because of this illness....

    • Sarah,

Khalid bin Walid (radiAllahu anhu) reported that once he suffered from insomnia.

The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wasalam) said to him, "Shall I teach you words that will make you go to sleep when you say them? Say (the below):

Allahumma Rabbas Samawaatis-Sab'i, wa ma adhal-lat, wa Rabbal-aradina, wa ma aqal-lat, wa Rabbash-Shaiateena, wa ma adhal-lat kun li jaran min sharri khalqika ajma'een ay-yafruta 'alaya ahad-um-minhum, aw ay-yatgha. Azza jaruk, wa tabarakasmuk

"O Allah! Lord of the seven Firmaments and whatever they cover, Lord of the seven earths and whatever they contain, Creator of the devils and whoever they mislead, Be my Protector from the evil of all Your Creatures lest some of them may hasten with insolence against me or transgress the bounds. Honoured is he who is in Your Protection and Blessed is Your Name."

  11. I am still laughing true blood for your comment on your own post...

  12. Slmz.

I have now been suffering from chronic insomnia for 1 year and 2 months. I've been for countless of tests, tried many medications, home remedies, natural products ,and adopted good sleeping environments. Nothing works, its now starting to affect my job. Last night like many other nights i got no sleep, i live my day on energy drinks now, walking into meetings and acting like nothing is wrong. I'm contemplating leaving my job and just giving up on my career. Its driving me crazy, i just can't progress to the next stage of my life. I can feel it in my body as well, i am gone so weak and my memory and concentration levels have dropped. I was a Cum Lauder student, best in my class, i excelled at work amongst my peers, I'm a software developer at a manager level by profession. But now my efforts are all in vain. I feel like it's just out of my control . I've spent lots of money as well on trying to find a fix. All i can do now is make dua. I dont know how much longer i can make it, but now i just give up. Im only 23 years old. Everything is falling apart. If anyone has anything to help me. Please let me know. Please make duas for me.

      Start wearing gunnar glasses .
      Don't work at nights
      Test your eyes.
Remove all blue lights in the house
After 6 pm don't have white light or blue light. Have orange lights. Lights that a amber in color. Don't make the house environment very bright with amber lights. Have them as necessary. Read this book if you can ~Why we sleep~

      Inshallah this will be alright.
Our Prophet saw slept less. You know what. Many don't get this. Only few get. It's a sign that Allah swt wants you to remember him. So remember him .Make duaas. Use all your time to remember him.
      Keep resiting this dua

    • Aoa all,

Read Ayatul Qursi + Surah ikhlas+ Surah Nas + Surah falaq, spit in your hands 3 times and rub around your body before going to sleep. Repeat 3 times total. This is sunnah. Inshallah you'll be fine. Plus try to do Ruqya and consult with a good Raaqi to remove and evil eye etc.
