Is it ok to marry my girlfriend who is 18 years younger than me

age difference

I am 40 years old and my girl friend is 22 years old and we are going to get married.

Is it good age to get married? She said people said I look like 27 to 33 years old.

  1. Azmath, Asalaamualaykum,

Allah(swt) permits us to marry someone who is good in deen and character, regardless of age. Your prospective bride can be 20 years younger or 20 years older or more and or less - there is no prohibition due to age.

BUT, Allah(swt) does not permit us to have boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. This is absolutely haraam and I urge you both to stop sinning, do tawbah and make your relationship halaal through marriage.

  2. Salaams,

Can I be candid with you? I am assuming you are Muslim, of course. You do realize that there are no boyfriends and girlfriends in Islam, don't you? I just wanted to mention that because that aspect seemed of more concern to me than the age question.

But to answer that, there are no restrictions upon age if the parties agree to a marriage. How old you look really has nothing to do with anything. If she and you have thought over the implications due to the gap in your age and are comfortable with the risks (for things such as you passing away and leaving her a widow much sooner than her peers), then by all means marry and move your relationship into the sphere of halal.

  3. Salaams,

Forgive me if I'm mistaken but just out of caution I want to say, if you are the same Azmath who posted this: http://www.zawaj.com/askbilqis/desperate-to-marry-my-sisters-daughter/ ...then be advised the answer in that post trumps the answers in this one.

If I have made any mistakes please forgive me and may Allah forgive me.
