Islamic marriage advice and family advice

Is it okay to marry a policeman?

One of the perks of being a cop is that you get to drive a cool car. Yes, I'm a guy, what can I say? This is a Dodge Charger.

Question:

Is it okay to work for the police in this country? I'm looking to get married and the person that im interested in works for the metropolitan police response team. - Sister Shaima

Wael's Answer:

Dear Sister Shaima, As-salamu alaykum,

I don't know what country you are in, but presumably you are in Britain or the USA.

There is nothing wrong with marrying a policeman. Someone who risks his life to keep peace and order in society is doing a great service.

There are some countries where corruption is endemic in the police forces, and some where the police are routinely involved in torture of suspects. But this is generally not the case in the West. Plus, I assume the man you speak of is a Muslim, so I would hope that he is using his position to do good, always remaining conscious of Allah.

So as long as he is not corrupt, or misusing his authority to abuse people, then he is working for the benefit of society.

The only other thing I would caution you about is that law enforcement is a high-stress profession and it is known to take its toll on marriages. Some officers bring the stress of the job home with them, or on the other end they shut down at home, wanting only to be left alone with no interaction. In addition, the job can require long and unpredictable hours.

I don't know the brother in question and he might be a wonderful man with good character and an easy going disposition. Just be aware of these potential problems so that you can recognize the signs.

And Allah knows best.

If any readers have some additional advice for this questioner, . I invite you to post your comments below.

(O Allah), Guide us to the straight path; The path of those whom you have favored; Not those with whom you are angry; Nor those who go astray.

Best regards, - Wael Abdelgawad

Yeah, like Britain and the USA, to name just two.

    • Malcolm,

Interesting that you show disapproval for (just guessing here) other countires so quickly with something that has NOTHING to do with the original question. And honestly, NO country is without corruption. Sorry if that knocks the soapbox out from under you.

In regards to the ACTUAL question, Wael is correct. Long hours, constant worry, and as always in this type of job, severe risks for families. The man that you love, and that you hope to spend your life with is indeed noble, and may he continue to show his pride in his choice of profession. I personally feel that you have received good and sound advice.
