Istikhara and Dreams

dreams dreamt

Assalam-o-alaikum,

I performed istikhara for someone i want to get married to.  I did it for 7 days. On my 6th day I saw wierd dreams.  In one I saw black water, in the other I saw I bumped into a woman performing prayers in the mid of the road, while riding a bike and wounded her hand (saw  little blood on her hand).  And on the last day I saw green color.

I asked a rohani scholar about my dream and he said that i should quit the idea of marrying the guy as he does not have correct beliefs. However, after the 7 day istikhara I was feeling rather positive as to where I was heading cause I asked for Allah's help but after what he told me my hope has withered away.

My heart is not satisfied though. I have read on the website that seeing dreams and colors is not necessary but one CAN see a dream. I have  been dreaming about red things even after finishing the istikhara.

So my question are:
a) How does one know if what we saw was the result of istikhara or just another dream? Or you shouldn't rely on dream at all.

b) Can you do the istikhara again if your heart tells so?

c) I wanted to do a wazifa for desired wish, ( my wish being if Allah doesn't want it for me, make this person disappear from my heart or make it happen) is it okay if i do it?

d) Or should I just listen to what the scholar said to me and forget him?

  1. Walaykumsalaam Naseem,

As we have repeated many times on this website, the result of Istikhara is not necessarily determined through a dream, although one may have a dream. However, we are not qualified on this website to interpret dreams.

If you had written to us explaining the qualities of your prospective spouse, we would have been able to offer you some advice. If as far as you are aware, the man you are interested in is of good character, is a striving Muslim, is God fearing and is able to look after you after marriage, then do istikhara, ask Allah to make this path easy for you if it is good for you in this life and the next and take it to your parents.

  2. Salaams,

As the article on this site that you read indicated, dreams are not the main focus of the istikhara. If you make istikhara (especially for the whole 7 days) and do not feel like your dreams are a clear guidance, you shouldn't rely on them at all to make your decision.

Sometimes even after making istikhara, we don't feel a clear cut sense of direction. In those times, you have to make the best decision you can and move forward seeking Allah's blessing.

Istikhara is meant only for 7 days at a time. If you want to wait a while and then make it again, no one is going to stop you. However, the fact is you did get an opinion of a scholar and that should be taken into some account. It may very well be that you already have your answers, but because it is not exactly the answer you wanted or as clear as the sun in the sky, that you just aren't accepting it.

You can ask Allah to make it clearer, it's up to you. Just be ready to accept that He may not make it any clearer and wants you to move forward trusting that He is leading your steps. You might not have the luxury of having it barred from you if it's not meant to be, because Allah tests us as he likes. He may very well have something around you that you can't have, just to strengthen you. It happens all the time.

The most important thing is to stop second guessing yourself and make a choice based on your best assessment of all the information available to you (advice from the scholar and "results" of istikhara included) and move in that direction. Progress along the path isn't made by sitting at a fork wondering what to do!

  3. thank you for your replies amy and sisterZ.. i think it's clear to me now, it's not to be..

    • Naseem,

What are the traits of this man? What is his character like? From what you know is he striving to practice Islam? Is he God fearing? Does he have a calm nature? Is he well mannered, polite, easy going?

    • Don't be lazy. Read the answers already given on this post. If you had done so, you would know that Istikhara is not dependent on dreams, or colors in dreams.

  6. i did Istighara prayer to find out if a person was right for me to get married to (we stopped talking for a few days) and in my dream i saw blood from menses (my period) . Most sites explain it means for an unwed girl to get married. My question is: 1) How accurate is this? 2) Does it mean I will get married to the period I made the istighara about or just marriage in general? Your answers are much appreciated.

  7. Aoa..I did istkhara whole 7 days.but I did not get any clear ans...also I ask to a scholar for istkhara he says that our stars are meeting but Allah is not agree for this...then what should I do now?

    • Warda, as-salamu alaykum. Whoever this "scholar" is that you talked to, he is ignorant and knows nothing about Islam. There is no such thing in Islam as the "stars are meeting." In fact the concept of astrology is completely against Islam and is a kind of shirk. And how on earth would the scholar know whether Allah agrees or not? These people are scammers who simply take your money and offer nonsense in return.

As I and others have said a thousand times before on this website (if people would only read the previous comments), Istikhara is not dependent on dreams, colors seen in dreams, or images in dreams.

Read the words of the Istikhara dua:

"O Allah! I seek goodness from Your Knowledge and with Your Power (and Might) I seek strength, and I ask from You Your Great Blessings, because You have the Power and I do not have the power. You Know everything and I do not know, and You have knowledge of the unseen. Oh Allah! If in Your Knowledge this action ------------------------------------------------ (which I intend to do) is better for my religion and faith, for my life and end [death], for here [in this world] and the hereafter then make it destined for me and make it easy for me and then add blessings [baraka'] in it, for me. O Allah! In Your Knowledge if this action is bad for me, bad for my religion and faith, for my life and end [death], for here [in this world] and the hereafter then turn it away from me and turn me away from it and whatever is better for me, ordain [destine] that for me and then make me satisfied with it."

The dua basically says, if this action is good for me then make it easy and put blessings in it, and if it's bad for me then keep it away from me. That's it. That is istikhara.

Does it say anything about dreams? Does it say, "O Allah, give me a dream?" Does it say, "Show me colors in dreams?" Does it say, "Give me a sign?" No, no and no.

After praying istikhara one should simply choose what feels right, and trust that Allah is guiding him/her to what is best. You should pray it yourself, not ask someone else to do it for you. And it has absolutely nothing to do with birth dates, mother's names or star signs.
