Question:

My brother's name is Abid Hassan Khan, originally from Pakistan, currently living and working in New Jersey. His date of birth is: 27-07-1978. We've been looking for a nice girl for him since 2 year, but there is no development yet. He also got engaged 2 yrs ago, but it broke off 2 times. We wanted someone to do Istikhara for us, and let us know what's wrong and what's good for him. Thanks.

Raidah, As-salamu alaykum,

You are misunderstanding Istikhara and how it works. It has nothing to do with names and birth dates.

And as my fellow editor Sister Z said to a previous questioner:

- Firstly, use the information and situation in front you to assess whether it appears good for your future.
Ask yourself various questions: Do you think this person is good in deen and character? Are there are any concerns that you have? Are there any matters about this person that are niggling at you - don't ignore them, but do address them. Also, consult trustworthy pious people about the person. Is Allah your main focus in selecting your spouse? If so, inshaAllah, it will be easier for you to answer these questions in a constructive and objective manner.

- Secondly, seek guidance from Allah(swt) by doing Istikhara yourself. We cannot do Istikhara for you; this is your direct communication with Allah. So learn about how to do it as there are conditions. You will find information regarding Istikhara at these links:
