How to keep my Iman up while menstruating?

worship dua tasbih

I wanted to reach out to all that can help me to figure out one problem. I know that a woman is not supposed to pray while menstruating. However, the few days that go without prayers really let my lower self go, and I mess up a lot. I wanted to find out if there is anything I can do to still be able to pray.

I have searched few websites, but they are contradicting each other and I am confused.

  1. Asalaam alaykum,

Though you cannot perform obligatory prayers, from my understanding, you can still beseech Allah (swt). I found the below advice:

Most scholars have prohibited menstruating women and people in a state of sexual defilement (janabah) from reciting the Qur'an or touching it. However some of them are on the opinion that she can recite the Qur'an without touching it except with her hand coverd.
Ibrahim an-Nakha'ee said, "There is no harm in menstruating woman reciting a Qur'anic verse." It was also the opinion of Imam Malik [ Fath Al Baree,vol.1, p. 305].
Again the menstruating woman is allowed to say rememberance of Allah. Um Ateeyah reported that they were instructed to let the menstruating women come out for the Eids and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest).
(Imam Al- Bukhari quoted this anecdote to show that since menstruating women were instructed to speak Allah's names and his attributes, they should also be allowed to read the Qur'an, in which Allah's names and attributes are also mentioned.)

You can also listen to Qur'an, nasheeds, etc.

    • I read one scholar saying that since women cannot pray in those days, they can atleast sit on the praying mat and do Zikr or read Tasbeeh when it is the time for Salah. This way, they will still be in routine and it will not mess up anything. And one can do the Zikr till one is satisfied or for the amount of time it usually takes to finish a prayer. Again, this is only a suggestion and not a ruling.

      Thank you

      • I've heard the same in regards to the sitting place. I also heard that electronic Qur'an, meaning those on applications on phones, computers and handheld devices like Ipads can be read and touched since you are not physically touching a printed Qur'an or the name of Allah (swt).

There's so much leeway in what she can do during this time, I think she can still hope to dwell in the remembrance of Allah (swt) during her menstruation. In this case, unlike the historical practices of the Jews or Christians, Islam invited the woman into the folds of Islam instead of ostracizing her from religious practices.

Not to mention of course, that all of us should always have Allah (swt) in mind in everything we do, Insha'allah.

      • Assalam-o-Aliakum wr wb!
Can you provide me the reference of it? Or can you atleast tell me the name of the shcolar? I'm confused in this regard and need to search
        Jazakallahu Khair!

  2. or reading coran via your computer. coran on websites

  3. AA;

You can always make thikr, tasbeeh, you can still spend time with your mosque friends, read Islamic books, etc. Just because you can not pray, does not mean you stop being a Muslim in all the other aspects sister 🙂

May ALLAH guide us, grant us patience, and shower us with his mercy.

If I am correct, it is from ALLAH. If I err it is from me, and I pray ALLAH forgives me. Allah knows best.

    AA

  4. I have heard from some people that a woman cannot enter the prayer area at the masjid. Also cannot sit on the prayer rug/carpet.
