Asalamu Alayikum every one..I have vitiligo (white patches) on body and hands...I make a lots dua. I was doing a treatment and i was recovering also ..my face got completely cured and the treatment stopped responding few years back..I completed my degree..I was happy because my face was clear now..n Masha Allah good..few months back i saw the patches have started appearing again, not that prominent though..I pray tahajjud , cry a lot ..make lots lots lots of dua.. few days back I saw it on a website that if i mix warm olive oil with rose water and read surah fatih 7 times on it.. the patches will disappear in sha Allah.. and there is no medical treatment for this in my view..

My question is can I do Istikhara for whether to use that olive oil treatment coz i don't want a heart break. My nikkah were in last october 2014 and rukhsati will be in sha Allah next yr..I am really very worried..plz make dua for me I don't know what to do.. being a girl these problems get more difficult to handle..: i am 24

  1. As-salamu Alaykum,
Someone I know had this issue before marriage. When a man came to ask for her hand the family was very honest about their daughter's condition and even showed him her entire bare arm so that he would understand that the condition extended to the rest of her body as well. The man did not have a problem with that so a lot of the anxiety my friend was feeling went away. Also the condition improved gradually after marriage and she is no longer afflicted. The only difference now is that she is very white instead her old olive skin color. You have to try to bear this test with patience. You can try different (safe) remedies and continue to make dua...but also try to accept that this is Allah's will. Be honest with the person you are marrying and try to relax. In my friend's case, her vitiligo started when she became extremely frightened after seeing a snake, and it may be that anxiety and fear play some role in the condition. I do not know if this view is medically correct but it is something to think about and work on if only for your own peace of mind.

There is some evidence to suggest that stress and anxiety can make skin conditions such as vitiligo flare up, so it might help to do some relaxation exercises and try to remove unnecessary stress from your life. You might also want to speak with a specialist doctor, as there are some treatments available that you could consider (eg. some creams and medications which a doctor might be able to prescribe).

Having a skin condition can feel very upsetting and can damage our self-confidence, especially if we're exposed to the elements of today's cultures which claim that our worth as women is defined by meeting a particular physical ideal (which is completely unrealistic and a product of culture based on capitalism and disposability).

But the man you have married has chosen to marry you - for the person that you are. InshaAllah, that should mean he wants to be with you as you are. Maybe explain to him that you're feeling anxious, and he can then inshaAllah give you additional support about this.

There have been some very successful people who have had vitiligo, so it doesn't have to limit what you can do. There are even professional models (like Winnie Harlow) and Bollywood actors (like Amitabh Bacchan), as well as the singer Michael Jackson. If they can succeed in professions that are so heavily influenced by modern commercialised culture, then there's no reason why your vitiligo should limit your own success.
