Masturbation and sexual thoughts – how do I stop myself?

Masturbation: Effects on Human Health

Asalamu alaykum,

I am 19 years old, male, and living with family. I feel as though it's time that  I need to be married, and have spoken to a few families, but it hasn't happened, mostly because I can't financially support myself or a wife yet. My problem is that when I'm in my room and lay down in my bed to rest, I start having thoughts about sex and the intimacy that married people share until they overpower me and I satisfy myself. I want to stop doing this, it is ruining my Islam and my life, and I just got caught in this habit about a few months ago. I know this is wrong, and I repent afterwards, telling myself that I will stop this time. Also, I take the Prophet's(SAW) advice and fast weekly, I pray at the masjid regulary, and I don't know what else to do. Please help.

There have been many posts on this site regarding masturbation and suggestions on how to cut down or stop doing this. I'd recommend having a look through them and thinking about whether the suggestions made might be helpful for you.

It's understandable for a young man to have a high sex drive, but there are ways to cope with this; such as fasting, which mashaAllah you are already doing. Make sure that you are avoiding watching or reading haraam materials, and remember to keep things in perspective - your life and faith are not going to be ruined by this; it is an unhelpful habit which you can break with some hard work, inshaAllah.
