I have a medical condition; can I join my prayers?

Urinary Tract Infection treatment kit

Assalam O Alaikum,

I have a urinary problem and as at now we don't know whether is Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) or Bladder Stones.

I have been treated for UTI for several months and the problem keeps persisting. the symptoms I have are frequent urination, strong urge to urinate everytime even just after urinating. I feel very uncomfortable because when I squat to urinate, any time I press, the urine does not stop flowing. I have abdominal pains too.

My problem is I cannot pray outside my home because I spend much time in the bathroom and waste alot of water which is not good in Islam but I cannot help it because the urine would not flowing and I feel like urinating every time. All I ask is; can I join my zuhur, asr, magrib and isha prayers?

I go through a lot just for one prayer.

thank you,

mina222.

Salaam Mina222,

I am sorry that you are experiencing these problems, and I pray that Allah is swift in granting you recovery from this. I would recommend that you consult your local Imam for his opinion on this, as we are not Scholars and can't give official rulings. What I can do is collate information on what I do know which is:

‘Imraan ibn Husayn (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (pubh)) said: ‘Pray standing, and if you cannot, then sitting, and if you cannot, then on your side.’” (narrated by al-Bukhaari, 1117)

It was narrated from Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (pbuh) said to a sick person who prayed using a pillow for rukoo’ and prostration “Pray on the ground if you can, and if you cannot, then tilt your head, and make your sujood  lower than your rukoo’.” (Narrated by al-Bayhaqi with a strong (qawiy) isnaad, 4359. Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Saheeh, 323).

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “No fatigue, no disease, no sorrow, no sadness, no hurt, no distress befalls a Muslim, not even the prick of a thorn, but Allaah expiates some of his sins for that.”  (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Murda, 5210 – from Abu Hurayrah)

Therefore it is OK for you to pray sitting, or however is comfortable if the whole process is too difficult for you.

On the subject of joining the prayers:

“Verily, As Salaah (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours” [al-Nisaa’ 4:103]

“It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allaah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision” [al-Ahzaab 33:36]

The Prophet (pbuh) did not join prayers together except when he was travelling or at times of hardship.

So I would say that it is better for you to pray on time, even if it means that you pray sitting or on your side, then to combine the prayers and miss the times, although of course it would be even better to speak to an Imam who can give you an official conclusion inshaAllah,

Peace,

Leyla

  2. Salaam alaikum,

As it has been already stated, you need to ask a qualified reliable sheikh to give you such an answer. However, I know that you cannot combine all your prayers like that. Such a practice has not been allowed for someone even in coma like state or the sahaba who were on the bed, bleeding with injuries who then eventualy died from it - even they didnt combine prayers for such a reason. They would do whatever they could of it, but at its required time.

Such a concession has been given for those travelling by the prophet hence we take from what has been given/made permissible by the prophet. Illness' and such existed during his time too yet he did not allow joining of the prayers due to an illness.
Even when you do join prayers, you join zuhr with asr and maghrib with isha. There is no concept of joining the 4 prayers in anything.

Continue reading your prayers on time but know that you are not required to take hours, trying to finish urinating and emptying yourself. Try to empty your bladder, then perform a normal wudhu and then straight after go do your required salah. If you leak uncontrollably - which you have not mentioned anything about - then in that case wear a sanitary towel so that your clothes dont get dirty. Do this for every prayer . Go to the washroom in between your prayers as much as you want. Do your wudhu just before you would pray and wear a sanitary towel and dont worry about any leaks in between if its uncontrollable. You are not required to take unncessary burden.
Do this up until you have got an answer from an Aalim.

    Was salaam

  3. Salamu alaikum . . . . . I ve heared from several sunni ulemas and shirks (in our place here in africa) speaking on such conditions. And d fatwas was if due to some severe conditions (illness or otherwise) someone keeps on polluting d air every few munites, and if for instance he performed ablution and b4 finishing his prayers he has already pollute d air and this keep happening frequently, then it is permissible for such people in such conditions to perform d ablution once and do his prayers. His prayers is valid even if he pollute d air whilst still praying. But he has to perform another ablution when intending another prayer (ie for eg after praying zuhr, if he wants to pray asr he has to perform another ablution if d former one is spoiled) This is also applicable to those having problem with urine or passing out excreta. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pls note that this is not applicable to every body, it is only applicable to those with problems of illness or severe conditions . . . . Mohd

    • Yes I have heard this, although I cannot 100% verify the validity (although the sister has studied a lot).
I heard that if someone has a medical condition which leads them to anything which may break wudhu: 'urine leakage etc' then they need to do wudhu 5x a day. Once at zuhr, once at asr and so on. If, for example a person has such an illness which means that they cannot pray 2 rakah without leaking (I am not sure of exact number) then they do wudhu before each prayer time.

If for example they are do wudhu for zuhr, pray the sunnah and find they leak - the wudhu is still valid and they can pray the fardh after as long as it is thezuhr prayer - if that makes sense.

I am not a scholar, but this is merely what I have heard so do take it with a pinch of salt - Allah knoes best

I'm sorry for your difficulties and like the others you most certainly need to speak to an Imam. But sister know that Islam is a religion of ease.
There are technicalities which you will need the Imam to explain to you to help you to offer prayer wheverever you may be, whether at home or or away at the correct time.

From what I know you fall into the category of 'People of excuse'. So becasue you suffer from a continuous state that invalidates wudu your excuse is walid, you are excused from making wudu for every single prayer. So
a person can be regarded as excused if the state that invalidates wudu continues during the whole time of a prayer (does that happen to you); that is, it does not even stop even for a short time to make wudu and perform the prayer. if that is the case then you make wudu once and prayer your salah regardless of whether urine is flowing or not. But your state does not permit you to combine all your prayers.

Please do speak to a qualified imam and ask him whether or not you fall into this category, if you do then life will become much simpler for you and you'll be able to perform each salah in its correct time.

I pray Allah makes it easy for you.
