How to repent for stealing CD’s

I am 16, and I have been stealing CD's from a shop for maybe 3 years- not always, just occasionally.

I was wondering what to do if I want God to forgive my sins? I was thinking of going to the shop and paying the man a large amount of money for the CD's and apologizing to him

Is it too late or can I fix this?

Stealing is a sin,, and it is important that you offer sincere tawbah and repentance.

If you wish to make amends to the shopkeeper, you could leave an anonymous donation for him. We are advised to conceal our sins and to be discreet when donating to those in need, so I would advise against public announcements or a face-to-face discussion with the man - this wouldn't resolve the major issues and could lead to unpleasantness which wouldn't help anyone.

A key part of repentance is taking steps to make sure the sin is not repeated. Think about the factors that led to you stealing, and try to address them. If you felt peer pressure from those around you, find new friends who will not encourage such behaviour. If you stole because you could not afford to buy what you wanted, why not get a part-time job? Also, think about what you stole - this wasn't food or something essential - did these CDs have media on them that wasn't in accordance with Islamic guidance? Try to remove negative influences from your life and focus on living a life in accordance with Islamic principles - read Quran, attend classes, avoid anything haraam...

Remember that Allah is Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

  3. Salaams,

I agree that you should try to recompense what you've stolen in value or with money. Midnight Moon had a good idea that you can somehow leave it to the store owner anonymously; however I would suggest that you explain by note (without identifying yourself) the reason you are leaving it; ie: that it is to repay for goods you stole. Maybe if the shop owner knows that a thief is trying to right the wrong, he will forgive you even though he doesn't know who you are.

  4. All good suggestions. I like the idea of leaving the money anonymously, with a note explaining. The shopkeeper has undoubtedly noticed that some CD's have gone missing, so it might be reassuring to him to know that the thief has repented. Just make sure that the money gets to the owner of the shop and is not intercepted by an employee who might help himself to a big tip.

Oh, and it's never too late to make tawbah and do the right thing.
