Islamic marriage advice and family advice

I want to marry him, but I’m still legally married in the Philippines

Divorce decree

I got married in the Philippines 7 years ago, but the marriage didn't work. I got separated from my husband 4 years ago. I came here to Bahrain a year and a half ago, and met a Pakistani guy who asked for marriage. But the problem is, I am still married in the Philippines. Everyone knows that there's no divorce in the Philippines, and it's very difficult to get an annulment. One needs thousands of pesos, and it really takes time.

He ran away from his family and started living with me because he was losing hope. We really love each other. A friend told us that I should convert to Islam so that we can marry.

Is it really true?

I started reading articles about Islam and it really took my interest. I decided to let him go back to his family, and started to learn about Islam. Is there really a chance that we can get married under sharia law?

  1. Salam,

I just needed clarification on the issue of this man "running away from his family". Is he married with family or he left his family as in his parents home?

    Salam

  2. Salaams,

    Two things here:

    1. You are not, according to shariah, obligated to become Muslim in order to marry. Muslim men are permitted to marry Christian and Jewish women. No conversion necessary.

    2. However, marrying a muslim man according to shariah in Bahrain may be more of a legal process, in which case your Fillipino marriage would come into play. Since we cannot give legal advice, the only thing you can do to get further clarification on this is to talk to an attorney in Bahrain and tell them your situation. They can help you resolve this with more certainty, in shaa Allah.

    • Abdulwahab, this is not a matchmaking service. Please use one of the Muslim matrimonial services like Zawaj.com, Muslima.com, HalfOurDeen.com, etc.
