'Syed' is a family name. Those carrying this name believe they are decendants of Rasul(sws). Whether they are or not makes them no different to anyone else. There is nothing in the Quran or Sunnah to say a 'Syed' must marry in to his family name only. If fact as far as I know, there is not even any discussion on this topic.

Any muslim can marry any other muslim, regardless of family line, colour, ethnicity, age, status, education, etc as we are all bound by our common belief in Islam. The only restrictions upon marrying are that a man cannot marry his mother, sister, inc milk sister, daughter, niece, maternal/paternal aunt (and same for a woman) etc.

For a Muslim, the main criteria for choosing a spouse is that he be a striving Muslim and be of good character ~ simple.

  2. No. It is not forbidden. Nor is it a criterion for marriage.

The "Syed" issue tends to arise from the Indian Sub-Continent and claims to Prophetic lineage are generally unfounded.
