Talking to fiance on phone.

phone conversation

Assalam O Alaikum,

Is talking to one's fiance over the phone and text messaging forbidden in Islam? If yes, then how should they both get to know each other?

Thanks,

Aleesha.

  1. Salaams,

In Islamic courtship, all interactions between a male and female must be supervised or chaperoned by a trustworthy adult- usually a family member. Typically, the couple can meet at the parents house of one or the other, and get to know each other while the family is present. This does not need to be limited to a one time occassion, it can happen multiple times until the couple feel they know each other well enough (and the family feels the same) and are ready to finally marry. As long as the couple are not left alone, this is an excellent way to get to know a potential spouse.

When it comes to phone and text message, it gets more complicated. Text messaging is usually a private affair and only the the two people communicating are privy to the conversation. It's more difficult to share a text messaged conversation with an observer so that it can be properly supervised, so I would advise against this type of communication between a male and female who aren't related or married. With a phone it can be the same way. If you are talking privately in another room where no one can hear the conversation, and so is the other party, there is no supervision. However, I would say that if a call is made by speakerphone and other adults are present to witness the conversation to ensure it remains appropriate, this would not violate any traditions that I'm aware of.
