Travel for marriage

dangling the carrot

Salam.

I am 33 years old, and a single mother of 2 young female children. I am planning to go to Malaysia and get married, inshallah. My mother and children are coming with me. My father is unable to travel. Am I able to get married inshallah? I have met this pious man before, but haven't decided to get married up until a year ago. Please, advice is needed.

  1. asalamu alaikum,

sis a Muslims sister is not allowed to travel without a Mahram. apart from your father do you have someone who can accompany you? if not, is it possible for the brother from Malaysia to come over to where you are to get married?

    ma salama..

    • Salaams,

I thought a woman travelling with a mahram was only for if she would be completely alone otherwise? I didn't think this applied for sisters travelling in a group with other women, and since she's travelling with her mother and kids she won't be alone.

I'm also thinking that since she has children, she has been married before and may not necessarily need a wali to marry again. If that's what you're asking sister, if your father has to go to represent you for marriage, you might want to check out that aspect first.

  2. ASSALAMALAIKUM-
What are the rules of seeking permission from the first wife? In addition,
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PERMISSION FROM THE 1ST WIFE-
IN ISLAM AND HERE IS NOT PROOF OF THIS ACT ANYWHERE IN QURAN AND HADEES-
    REGARDS

  3. As-salamu alaykum sister. I see no reason why you cannot marry this man. Your father can still act as wali, even if he cannot travel. For example he can give his permission by phone. Or you can ask a local Imam to act as wali.

Furthermore, since you are presumably divorced, some scholars say you do not need a wali and can represent yourself.
