Many mosques in the West insist on a civil marriage as well as nikah, in order to protect the rights of husband and wife under the countries' laws. As UK and US law don't currently recognise a nikah by itself as a legal marriage in their legal systems, a couple married by nikah alone wouldn't be able to access certain services and securities available to couples whose marriage is recognised by the state. It might be worth thinking about whether you wish to have a civil marriage as well, for these reasons; although there are valid circumstances in which this might not be possible, for example if you are taking a second/third/fourth wife.

If you're looking for a local mosque for your nikah, it might be worth speaking to someone at your own mosque and asking them to point you in the right direction - even if they don't provide the service themselves, they will likely know someone who does.

If you decide to go ahead with a nikah marriage only, make sure that you and the woman you are marrying are both happy with the arrangement, and aware of the legal implications.

If the poster does not want to register the marriage for some reason, can the nikah not be performed by anyone else like an uncle, father, etc, as long as the requirements of nikah are fulfilled (mahr, witnesses, wali for the woman)? I do not think an imam or religious scholar is necessary.

Please correct me if my understanding is not correct. I was in a sort of similar situation, but we ended up not marrying, but this was the advice we had gotten.

    • Yes, that's true, the nikah can be performed by any Muslim as long as the conditions of marriage are met (witnesses, payment of mahr, mutual consent of bride and groom, publicization of the wedding, etc).
