How to ward off Shaytan when I am impure

Salaam,

I have a big problem if anyone can advise me. I am going thorough quite a struggle and when I am at my worst I turn to Allah, read namaaz and so on but when I am in an impure state what do I do? I can't do wudu (abolution) which would make me feel freash and so on what do I do what can I do?

Can someone advise me on how I can strengthen my emaan when I am in this impure state and not let the shaitaan get to me or get the better of me. I start doing things like over eating getting angry, losing my suber (patience) and so on, I really hate it but do not know how to control it.

jazakalah,

hudafiz,

Sister Fozia.

  1. As Salamualaikum, sister fozia,

You are not allowed to perform prayers or touch the Quran while in state of impurity.

But you can seek refuge in Allah from the Shaitaan, you can read Islamic books. According to some scholars, you can even read the Quran from a computer software. So, you can use there alternate means to distance Shaitaan from yourself and continue receiving Blessings from Allah.

As far as touching books other than the Quran is concerned, then Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may
Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“Anything on which there is Qur’aan
comes under the same rulings as the Mus-haf if there is only Qur’aan on it, but if other things are written on it as well as Qur’aan, then the ruling depends on which is the greater. It is permissible to touch books of tafseer, hadeeth, fiqh and essays in which there is some Qur’aan.” (Sharh al-‘Uddah, 1/385).

I hope I have answered sufficiently. If you still have a doubt, please revert.

    Wassalamualaikum

    • And sister, try to control your emotions. Don't put too much psychological pressure, just try to breathe deeply and stay calm and talk to Allah Subhana Wa Ta'ala(not in the literal sense, just think of Allah and praise him and make dua)

  2. Salaam, I disagree with the brother Waseem due to the reasons given at the bottom, but first reply to you from Qura'n & Authentic Ahadith not scholars or me!!

One Hadith in Bukhari mentions of a Sahabi [r.a] who did not answer Prophet [saw]'s Salaam, so later he did but Prophet[saw] asked him of why he did not respond before and he said it was due to the fact that I was impure, so to this Prophet [saw] 'Told him' that: "SubhanAllah! A Mu'min is NEVER IMPURE!!" thus we can say Salaam, or read Qur'an etc now the second point is please don't say Huda Hafiz as Huda is not Islamic name but Say "Allah Hafiz"

Now to Waseem's reply, proof is as follows: After or just at the 25 mins of this video, you'll know with 'Proof' that we can read & touch the Qur'an at All times

    • Brother Umar, the impurity you refer to is not the one sister mentions. You can touch the Quran at all times because there is no restriction (though there is a misunderstanding of an Aayah due to which people say wadhu is required). But there is a restriction for an impurity that a woman faces, which is known as menstruation (Hayd). Similarly, if a man is impure (janabah), he can not touch the Quran as well.

  3. Salaams,

Sister, in addition to the above you can also recite any Qu'ran that you know from memory. Also, you can recite from Qu'ran as long as you are not touching it, which means if you have someone who can turn the pages or leave it resting upon something where you can view it this should be ok. Not only that, but if you want to go wash your face etc to freshen up, it might not count as a "wudu" in the legalistic sense but it may help you feel better. Water does have restorative and calming properties regardless of the reason we might be using it for. Sometimes even a good soak in a warm bath can leave you feeling better!

One thing you also have to keep in mind is that if these feelings are coming during an impure state due to your monthly cycle, some of this is normal because of hormonal fluctuations while our bodies go through its natural changes. Women often struggle with mood swings and less emotional control at this time than they do at other times of the month, and it's completely understandable and not necessarily directly from a jinn or shayteen. If you feel these moods are too disruptive or extreme, there are medical treatments that help moderate them. I suggest you talk to your gynecologist about your concerns and see what she might suggest to you.

Personally, I've always felt that Allah gives us ladies a respite during these times of our monthly cycles so we can rest, relax, and try to keep our focus while our body is doing what it needs to do and often affecting us in ways that leave us feeling unwell both emotionally and physically. I suggest you take that time as it's intended and try to pamper and comfort yourself so that it can pass easier. You can definitely incorporate the permissable aspects mentioned by brother Waseem, and you can still make as much dua to Allah as you like.

    • Sister Amy, Assalam 3alykoum W.r W.b

Quick question, which may be out of subject. You said : "One thing you also have to keep in mind is that if these feelings are coming during an impure state due to your monthly cycle, some of this is normal because of hormonal fluctuations while our bodies go through its natural changes."

I tend to suffer from hormonal fluctuation a week prior to menses. I get really moody, very quick to anger, sad and some times I cry for no reason. But this happens a week before. Once in the menstrual state, I feel fine. I am just wondering if this is normal. A lot of people have told me that I shouldn't experience this outside the menstrual state.

      JazakaAllah.

      • salaam
sister there is nothing abnormal about it alot of women inculing my self experience symtoms before the starting of the cycle/period this is completely normal how ever some people do have other conditions which make it worse like side effects from medication they are on or PCO/PCOS or higher male hormones and others suffer from pain but in all cases if you are worried the first person you should turn to is your doctor

        Allah Hafiz

  4. itz true that we cant offer prayers or recite the holy Quraan ...buh it is allowed to take wudhu.. as it builds a
wall against our body and shaitaan ..and after taking wodhu u cant offer your prayers as it is haraam but u can make your toungue buzy with Dikr,Durood and even make Duaa... Shaitaan gets closer to us when our body is impure.... so the best way is to take wodhu.....

May Allah Subhanatallah guide us in the right path Ameen ya Rabal Alameen 🙂

  5. salaam
and thank you for all your replies, I will keep them in mind and try them.
one other thing I wanted to ask is can I read the English translation of the Quran which is not in Arabic at all during this time?

    • Salaams,

If there is no Arabic ayats in it whatsoever, and no name of Allah in Arabic depicted anywhere and all the print is strictly in English, then you may. I have one like that and I use it during my time. Without any Arabic ayats etc the book is just like any other printed book, it's the Arabic that makes it Holy in my understanding.

      • salaam
and thank you i will keep it in mind and try it. my other problem with this was that i wanted to learn some suratah off by heart butwas worried tha i was not reading the quran quite right and for that reason wanted to take some tajweed classes to correct any mistakes i am making and due to my personal circumstances i can only do this online with three lessons a week on skype with a tutor i do have the option of a female tutor this is through Madinah arabic tuition centre native tutors but if anyone has a better idea or alternative sites then please let me know

        jazakala

        • I would suggest a tutor in person, rather that online. This works better. I don't know if you'll be able to find one though.

If you have to continue online, I believe Madinah Arabic Tution Center s good enough. You can also practice by listening to Qiraa'ah by Shaikh Ali al Hudhaifi (Imam of Masjid an Nabawi - Madeenah al Munawwarah) or Shaikh Muhammad Siddeeq al Minshaawi

There is a program by Shaikh Minshawi where he recites and the kids repeat after him. This is very useful in learning the Quran. I am not able to find it online. If anyone knows, can please mention it.

I have uploaded a sample (Surah Ikhlaas) here: http://chirb.it/O62e8I Tell me if you like it or find it useful.

  6. What is correct is that it is permissible for the menstruating woman to enter into the Masjid and to touch the Mushaf, and there are proofs upon that, from them being:

-The statement of the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family: “Oh Aa’isha! Pass me the prayer mat” she replied: “I am menstruating” then he, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family said: “Your menstruation is not in your hands” (narrated by Muslim 11-298)

-The Hadeeth of Aa’isha that when she was Menstruating during Hajj, the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family said to her: “Do what the pilgrim does except you do not go around the Ka’bah” (narrated by Al-Bukhari 305 and Muslim 120-1211). The menstruating women were still inside the most sublime of all the Masaajid, and that is the Masjid Al-Haraam, without order from him, neither from his (four) caliphs nor from other than them, that they should leave from the Masjid Al-Haraam. Al-Bukhari has made a chapter in his Kitaabis-Salaat (that is inside his Saheeh): [Chapter: The woman sleeping in the Masjid], and he conveyed the Hadeeth of Aa’isha may Allah be pleased with her that she said: “A black woman became Muslim with some of the ‘Arabs, and she had a tent or a small room with a low roof inside the Masjid…”(Al-Bukhari 439). The general foundation of the women is that they menstruate, for the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family said: “This is something that Allah has written upon the daughters of Aadam”(narrated by Al-Bukhari 305 and Muslim 120-1211), and it was not narrated (in that Hadeeth of the black woman) that she left from the masjid during the days of her menstruation, and neither within it is a clarification that she passed her menopause.

-And(also) from the evidences that the menstruating Muslimah is not impure, is the Hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah “Glorified be Allah, the believer does not become impure” (reported by Al-Bukhari 383 and Muslim 371), then if she is (considered to be) pure; except that which is observed from the private part, then there is no justification for expelling her from the Masjid, and neither to prevent her from reading the Qur’an.

-And from them (i.e. the evidences) is the Hadeeth of Umm Ateyyah, and within it:(regarding the menstruating women attending the ‘Eid prayer) “let them witness the good and the supplication of the Muslims”. The good is general and the supplication of the Muslims is general, from it is the recitation ofthe Qur’an and other than it, then he said “and that they should keep away from the Musalla (prayer place) of the people” (Al-Bukhari 324 and Muslim 890), with this (some of the scholars) use as a proof that the menstruating woman does not enter the Masjid. Then this conclusion must be looked into, for whatis known is that the Musalla of ‘Eid does not take the same ruling as the Masjid concerning this (issue) or other than it. Rather the intention (behind ordering the menstruating women to stay away) was preventing free mixing with the men, and that is taken from the Hadeeth of Ibn Abbaas that the prophet may the peace and blessings ofAllah be upon him and his family, conducted a sermon for the men then he went and conducted a sermon for the women, which indicates towards the fact that they are not equal in their merit and they are different. The like of this was mentioned by An-Nawawee.

Likewise the evidences pertaining to the recitation of the one who is sexually impure is in the same chapter so we shall mention them together: “The prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, used to make Dhikr (verbal remembrance) of Allah at every opportunity” from the Hadeeth of Aa’isha that comes in the Saheeh (i.e. Al-Bukhari).

As for the Hadeeth of ‘Amr Bin Hazm “Nobody may touch the Qur’an except he who is pure” then the meaning of [pure] here is: that he is not a Mushrik (polytheist), because the Muslim does not become impure, as Allah The Most High says:

    Verily,the Mushrikûn are Najasun (impure)
    At-Tawbah28

So then the point behind these evidences: the permissibility for the menstruating woman and the one who is sexually impure to enter the Masjid, and their touching and recitation of the Qur’an. It is affirmed that the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, came to Faatimah and said: “where is your cousin? (i.e. ‘Ali)” so she replied: “he is angry with me” so then the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family went and found him sleeping, and there was soil upon him so (the prophet) said: “Rise, Oh father of the soil” and what is well known is that the sleeping one is exposed to wet dreams and sexual impurity. And the Ashaabus-Suffah [1] used to sleep in the Suffah (shaded area) in the vicinity of the Masjid.

And it is affirmed that the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family said: “He who takes residence in the Masjid, Allah will treat him hospitably just as the family of the absent one are hospitable to him when he arrives” (Narrated by Ibn Maajah 652, Ahmed 2/328 and in Saheeh Musnad of Shaykh Muqbil 1253) the Hadeeth has some criticism however we have mentioned it as part of the evidence.

So then our point behind this: The permissibility for the menstruating woman and the one who is sexually impure to enter into the Masjid, and the permissibility of them touching the Mushaf, and that which comes in the Hadeeth of ‘Amr Bin Hazm then it has been spoken about concerning its chains of narration, that none of them are free from weakness according to what we know of, however Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “The Ummah is in agreement with its acceptance” and it has already proceeded that the ruling (extracted from the Hadeeth) is attributable upon the Mushrik (polytheist) and not upon the menstruating and the one who is sexually impure from amongst the Muslims.

As for the story of Ibn Rawaahah (taken from Sunnan Ad-Daaraqutnee 1/120 and Al-Bayhaaqee in Khilaafiyaat 322 and is also brought forward by Ibn Abee Dunyaa in his Al-Ishraaf 239) upon the requirement of being unblemished (from menstruation and the like) just as we have clarified in “Al-Asilat Ush-Shi’riyyah Ul-Hadeetheeyyah”- that his wife said to him “You have had intercourse with your slavegirl” and he denied that, so she said to him “if you have not had intercourse with her then recite a verse (from the Qur’an)” [2]so he replied:1q“I testified that the promise of Allah is the truth and that the fire is a dwelling place for the disbelievers and that the throne is floating above the water and above the throne is the Lord of all that exists. And stern Angels carry it Angels that belong to the God and they have marks (of distinction)”

So she said: “I believe in Allah and declare my eye to be lying”.This story has clear criticism concerning the source and its mention has preceded (in Al-Asilat Ush-Shi’riyyah Ul-Hadeetheeyyah), and as for the requirement of being unblemished (by menstruation etc.) then this is from the Ijtihaad of Abdullah Bin Rawaahah and is not incumbent.

And (he is) from those that say that the sexually impure one can not recite the Qur’an, and he who opposes him has with him an evident proof, and the proof takes precedence over the Ijtihaad. And from the things that those that say its impermissible for the menstruating woman and the sexually impure one to enter the Masjid rely upon is the Hadeeth of Aa’isha may Allah be pleased with her that the prophet may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family said:“I do not permit the Masjid for the menstruating woman, nor the sexually impure one” (narrated by Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah, and Al-Bayhaaqee 2/443) then its dispute revolves around Jasrah Bint Dajaajah, and she is unknown and Al-Bukhari said: “she has with her odd things (i.e. in her narrations)”

I say (i.e. Shaykh Yahya): and from her ‘odd things’ is this Hadeeth which opposes many of the fundamental principles (of Fiqh), to the extent that An-Nawawee said: “It (i.e. the Hadeeth) is weak with agreement of the people of understanding”.

q[1]Ashaabus-Suffah: those people that made Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah who were poor and found no place to reside – explanation taken froman answer by Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen within the Noor ‘Ala Ad-Darb series and can be found herehttp://www.ibnothaimeen.com/all/noor/article_7721.shtml

q[2]meaning, if you have not had intercourse then you must be ritually pure and not sexually impure, so this narration indicates that he used to hold the opinion that it was not permissible for him to recite whilst in the state of sexual impurity, that is why she asked him to recite a verse from the Qur’an.

  7. and i saw a comment saying u can read the Holy Quraan if sum one opens it4 you ... Noo datz not true itz trulyy haramm reciting Quraan while you are impure because Quraan is known as Kitabulllah means Allah's kitab and that should be carried with full respect ..... and even when you are pure you cant touch Holy Quraan unless you take wodhu

May Allah Subhanatallah bless whole Muslims Ameen

  9. Salaam, beautiful statements from Kabdunafi due to no personal opinion as our opinions don't count in Islam but only Allah & His Messengers counts thus the 'Proof & Evidences' mahs'Allah!!

Moreover, from Ahadith in Bukhari & others... women in menstruating period do NOT have to pray at all for that period. Women are free from praying for the period of menstruating period but the Ramadan fasts have to be fasted afterwards but NOT the prayer & even after giving birth to baby 40 days no fast nor pray for women, they can enjoy life [though Halal way].
