Button against rapeHello, my name is alyssa. I am new to islamic religion. I am asking people to please help me out.

My question is, If a woman is raped, whether she gets pregnant from it or not, will she still be stoned for adultery? Or will she receive any lashes?

  1. Alyssa, As-salamu alaykum,

A woman who is raped is a victim of a terrible crime. She has done nothing wrong as she did not consent to the act. There is no punishment for her, and there should be no shame or stigma attached to her. She should receive counseling and therapy to help her recover from the trauma that she suffered.

For the man who commits rape, the Islamic punishment is lashing or death, depending on the circumstances. Also, please note that a conviction for rape does not require four witnesses like zinaa (fornication or adultery), but can be based on convincing circumstantial evidence.

So, that's how it's supposed to be. In reality, there are some backward parts of the Muslim world where a woman who is raped would be deeply shamed, and may even be subjected to violence by family members who feel she has "disgraced" the honor of the family. This is a terrible reality, that a woman who has already been victimized should be further victimized by her own family. Such things are not a product of Islamic teaching, but of ignorance and backward cultural habits. In fact Islamic education should try to wipe out these backward practices.

  3. Dear Alyssa,

I just noticed that you have signed off with 'Age 10'. Are you really aged ten years old, or is that just part of your signature. If you are just ten years old, I find it worrying that you have asked this question. I pray that you are not in fear of abuse by anyone inshAllah. If this is the case, please speak to someone who can help you, a teacher, police officer, your mother or a trusted family member.
