Where and when to have an Islamic Marriage?

islam nikah

As-salamu alaykum.

I converted to Islam 2 years ago. I have a previous marriage to a Christian man and has not been annulled ‘til present. We have lived separately for 4 years. I’m presently in a relationship with a Muslim man and wants to marry under Islamic religion. My questions are:

1. Am I already allowed to remarry? As my ex didn’t intend to accept Islam and never he will convert.

2. What country allows such marriage? As me and him are currently on different countries. He’s in Europe, I’m in Asia.

3. What are the requirements we need?

Thank you very much. And May Allah Bless you.

I think it's probably advisable to seek legal advice from where you and this man you wish to marry live, as it'll depend on the laws in your countries. I think most countries would require you to have legally divorced your first husband or had the marriage annulled, in order for you to have a marriage which would be registered as legal in that country.

I am a revert and have met someone I am interested in. We are going to have a meeting in March. He is a born Muslim. I lost my virginity prior to converting. He is aware of this, what are my rights if the meeting goes well and we decide to get married? Are they the same? I feel uncomfortable asking someone directly.

Thank you so much for your help!

    • Salam,

Congratulations on having faith! Yes they are the same. Virginity doesn't have an impact on rights. You should have a guardian that also checks out the guy before marriage. Most people will refer to this guardian as a "Wali".
