Are Christians friends or enemies? And is Marilyn Monroe in Hell?

Islam and Christianity

Islam and Christianity

Editor's Note: Please do not make fun of the sister's questions. If you have a sincere answer, then offer it. Jazakum Allah khayr. - Wael

In some places the Quran says the Christians are enemies, but it also calls them friends. So what is the meaning of the following ayahs?

[Maidah 5:13] So We cursed them because of them constantly breaking their covenant, and hardened their hearts; they shift the Words of Allah from their places, and have forgotten a large portion of the advices that were given to them; and you will constantly learn of deceits from them, except a few; so forgive them and excuse them; indeed Allah loves the virtuous.

[Maidah 5:14] And We made a covenant with those who proclaimed, “We are Christians” - they then forgot a large portion of the advices given to them; We have therefore instilled enmity and hatred between them till the Day of Resurrection; and Allah will soon inform them of what they were doing.

and in another ayat Allah says the opposite

[Maidah 5:51] O People who Believe! Do not make the Jews and the Christians your friends; they are friends of one another; and whoever among you befriends them, is one of them; indeed Allah does not guide the unjust.

i am totally confused whether they are friends or enemy? in some ayats of Quran Allah says donot take christian as friends on the other hand Allah says the near to you is Nisarah (christians) Can you please explain this???

2nd question: do the Christians go to Heaven or Hell?

[Maidah 5:69] Indeed those who call themselves Muslims - and similarly among the Jews, and the Sabeans, and the Christians * - whoever sincerely accepts faith in Allah and the Last Day, and does good deeds - so there shall be no fear upon them nor shall they grieve.

one of my friends told me that marilyn monroe was a heathen she will go to hell. when i asked if Allah can do anything why he cant send her to heaven but instead he said May Allah guide you like i am a sinner.

Please dont make fun of this question and i want precise answers.

  1. Assalamaikum,

If I say anything wrong or something that offends anyone, please do let me know. Sister, to be honest I myself do not know the answer to your questions. I have also wondered this in the past. I interpret the verses that you provided saying that Christians are not technically our enemies because if they were our enemies then why do we respect them and call Christians and Jews the People of the Book? I personally think that the verses are warning us against Christians who are corrupt and basically bad people and we all know that not all Christians are bad but not all are good either. In every religion there is good and bad. You can be friends with Christians, Jews, etc. as long as they are a good person. I have several friends who are Christian and they are good people. At the end of the day what matters most is that we are humans and believe in God.
As for your question regarding Marilyn Monroe, she has done several things that are indecent and immodest. Only Allah knows her fate in the afterlife.

    • A little help from Andrew Booso writing for Suhaib Webb is handy Alhamdulilah.

The contemporary world, in which religious studies and Scriptural analyses are not known to respect historical orthodoxies, has witnessed a variety of writers oppose the finality of Islam, whilst claiming to be representatives of Islam. These claims usually fall on deaf ears because most Muslims are adherents of the orthodox position. Nevertheless, a literalist and unscholarly reading of the Qur’an can lead to some confusion, and this has been the case with the method of writers adhering to perennial philosophy.
The first verse that causes confusion to one unfamiliar with orthodoxy is Qur’an 2:62, whose confusion is eliminated by the following translation from Saheeh International through the use of ungainly, yet necessary, comments in square brackets:

Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muhammad] – those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness – will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.

The relevant exegesis of this verse from the Tafsir (exegesis, or interpretation) of Tabari, on the authority of Suddi and Mujahid (the student of Ibn ‘Abbas, may God be well pleased with him and his father), establishes the orthodox position from the earliest period of Muslim history:

      The Suddi Hadith

Suddi relates the lengthy story of Salman the Persian’s coming to Islam, telling of his conversion first to Christianity from Zoroastrianism after meeting a Christian monk, and how he travelled to one sage after the next, serving each until their death, until the last one told him that a prophet was about to appear, saying: “I do not think that I shall live to see him, but you are a young man, and are likely to live to see him. He will come forth in the land of the Arabs.” The account continues to when at last Salman meets the Prophet ﷺ (peace be upon him) in Medina, and:

while he was talking with him, Salman remembered his former companions, and told the Prophet ﷺ how they had been, saying, “They used to fast, pray, and believe in you, and they testified that you would be sent as a prophet.” When Salman had finished praising them, the Prophet ﷺ told him, “Salman, they are of the denizens of hell.” And that distressed Salman greatly, for he had said to him, “Had they met you they would have believed and followed you.” So Allah revealed this verse: “‘Surely those who believe, those of Jewry, the Christians, and the Sabaeans—whoever has faith in Allah and the Last Day . . .” (Tabari, 1.323).

      The Mujahid Hadith

The second hadith (record of the words or actions of the Prophet ﷺ) is from Mujahid, also about the conversion of Salman to Islam and the subsequent revealing of the verse “Surely those who believe...” In this account:

Salman told the Prophet ﷺ about those Christians and what he had seen of their works, and he replied, “They did not die upon Islam.” Salman said, “The whole earth darkened around me,” and he recounted their spiritual rigors. Then this verse was revealed, so the Prophet ﷺ summoned Salman and told him, “This verse has been revealed about your companions.” Then he added, “Whoever dies upon the religion of Jesus and in submission [lit. “upon Islam”] before he hears of me is in goodly state. But whoever hears of me today and does not believe in me has perished,” (Tabari, 1.323).

      Tabari comments:

Therefore, the correct interpretation (ta’wil) of the verse is what we have just mentioned from Mujahid and Suddi; that those who believe of this Umma [community], and those who were Jews, and the Christians, and Sabaeans: whoever believed—of the Jews, Christians, and Sabaeans—in God and the Last Day, “their wage awaits them with their Lord; no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they sorrow.” The interpretation we first mentioned [in his Qur’anic exegesis a few pages earlier, that “whoever believes in and acknowledges the Resurrection after death on Judgement Day, and does good deeds, obeying God, shall have their reward with their Lord”] is closest to the literal content of the text, for Allah (exalted is His praise) has not chosen one segment of humanity above the rest in rewarding good works when they are accompanied by true faith. [Tabari, 1.320, 323–24, trans. Keller]

Ibn Kathir also states in his Tafsir:

[After narrating that the verse was revealed as mentioned by Suddi] The faith of the Jews was that of whoever adhered to the Torah and the sunnah [tradition] of Moses (upon whom be peace) until the coming of Jesus. When Jesus came, whoever held fast to the Torah and the sunnah of Moses without giving them up and following Jesus was lost.

The faith of the Christians was that whoever adhered to the Evangel and precepts of Jesus, their faith was valid and acceptable until the coming of Muhammad ﷺ. Those of them who did not then follow Muhammad ﷺ and give up the sunnah of Jesus and the Evangel were lost.

The foregoing is not contradicted by the hadith relating that the verse “Surely those who believe, those of Jewry, the Christians, and the Sabaeans—whoever has faith in Allah and the Last Day...” (2:62), was followed by Allah’s revealing: “Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion shall never have it accepted of him, and he shall be of those who have truly failed in the next life,” (Qur’an 3:85), for the hadith merely confirms that no one’s way or spiritual works are acceptable unless they conform to the Sacred Law of Muhammad ﷺ now that he has been sent with it. As for people prior to this, anyone who followed the messenger of his own time was guided, on the right path, and was saved. [Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Adhim, 1.283, trans. Keller]

      Here is another narration

Salman Al-Farisi reported: I asked the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, about the people of religion who had been with me, mentioning their prayers and acts of worship. Then, Allah revealed the verse, “Verily, those who believe, those who are Jewish, Christian, or Sabians, whoever believed in Allah and the Last Day and worked righteousness will have their reward with their Lord and they will not fear nor grieve.” (2:62)

Source: Tafseer Ibn Abi Hatim 2:62

Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Ibn Taymiyyah

I have read even more narration of Sahaba RA showing this ayah was revealed about the Salman al Farisi RA situation. Salman had met people of the book who did not receive the message of Islam.

Now we need to understand even further than this-

`Ali bin Abi Talhah narrated from Ibn `Abbas, about,

(Verily, those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day) that Allah revealed the following Ayah afterwards,

(And whoever seeks religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers) (3:85).

We see this even in the interactions of Rasulullah sallahualahiwasalam. For example Jews are monotheists but when Islam came were warned not to disbelieve since disbelievers will be imprisoned in Jahannam forever may Allah help us fear it as we ought to and save us from it.

Anas ibn Malik reported: A young Jewish boy used to serve the Prophet and he became sick, so the Prophet went to visit him. The Prophet sat near his head and asked him to embrace Islam. The boy looked at his father, who was sitting next to him. The father said, “Obey Abu Al-Qasim,” and so the boy embraced Islam. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came out saying, “All praise is due to Allah who has saved the boy from the Hellfire.”

      Also,

Al-Hafiz Abu Bakr Al-Burqani narrated from Abu `Imran Al-Jawni that he said, " `Umar bin Al-Khattab passed by the monastery of a monk and he said: `O monk!' Then the monk came out, and `Umar looked at him and began to weep. Then it was said to him: `O Commander of the faithful! Why are you weeping' He replied: `I remembered the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, in His Book,

(Laboring, weary. They will enter into Fire, Hamiyah.) So that is what has made me cry. '''

  2. Assalamu Alaikum

    Hi Lorelei Lee,

Firstly, your question was asked with sincerity and will be answered in the same manner.

I have never been a Christian, as such...........but I converted to ISLAM around 7-8 months ago. I am Australian, by birth, just for reference.

I was forced to go to Church when I was very young, and to be honest, I hated it!! You cannot love something if you are 'forced' to do it!! So, I have never classed myself as a Christian. I was an atheist for the past 30 years until very recently.

I have some wonderful Muslim friends in Jordan and they have shown me the way to Allah - best decision I have ever made!! I am always happy when I read my Qur'an. I would never live my life any other way now.

I agree with what ns1286 stated above.

There are good Christians and bad Christians. There are good Muslims and bad Muslims. But, you don't have to be Muslim or Christian to be good person.

Muslims are allowed to marry Christians, but the children are brought up Muslim - unless both parents decide to bring them up half and half. Then let the child decide when they are old enough.

But, if she converts to Islam and they divorce, and then she reverts back to Christianity, the children automatically go the Father.

As for Marilyn Monroe - she was very mixed up when she was alive............she was taken advantage of in so many different ways. She didn't know right from wrong, I think.

It will be for Allah to decide her fate, when the times comes...............but she was NOT a Muslim...........you must understand that, too.

Allah is forgiving to all people who believe!!

I know I probably haven't answered your questions thoroughly, as I am a recent convert to Islam..........but I hope I have helped in some way.

    Take care,

    • Whalesong, I think you gave a good and helpful answer to the extent of your knowledge, thank you.

    • Asalam o Alaikum dear sister. I congratulate you on embracing Islam. May Allah always keep you on the right path and May this iman stays in your heart till your last breath. MashAllah you have much knowledge of Islam considering you just reverted. Stay blessed. Wasalam

  3. O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.

-The translation on quran.com uses the word ally rather then the word friend , also the quran I have at home uses the word ally.

-There's a difference between the word ally and friend, if you look up the definition of ally , its something more along the lines of the following:

*a person, group, or nation that is associated with another or others for some common cause or purpose

The definition of a friend is: a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.

-To me the verse that you were talking about may be referring to war, so it might be ok to be friends with them but not take them as an ally during a battle.

OP:2nd question: do the Christians go to Heaven or Hell?

-Cant answer that , but this question reminds me of the story about the man who committed 99 murders but still Allah forgave him, so in other words no one on earth can answer that question. Only Allah holds that knowledge.

  4. Asalam o Alaikum. Sister I read your question and I often thought about the very same question because I have a very warm hearted, middle aged christian lady as a friend. She has proven better than most muslim women I know and helped me alot in my difficult times. I was always sure that it cant be that if a muslim man can marry a christian or a jew woman and cant befriend a non-muslim. So I just researched on the topic and got an answer to prove that personal friendship is allowed with them otherwise how can we ever call them towards islam?
The word used in the Quraan (which we normaly translate as friend) is "awliya" which has many meanings but mostly its used for Allie. The most commonly used word in arabic for friend is "rafeeq". So the word "awlia" is for allies not for friends. the following link may clear things a bit more for you.

    http://www.answering-christianity.com/friends.htm

As for the question you asked about miss monroe. I cannot answer that. Its Allah’s decision to give torment to whomever He wishes and to reward whomever He pleases. I didnt think it was a funny question coz I myself sometimes pray for some celebs I like. I pray to Allah to guide them because no one wants to see someone they like in pain and anguish.
May Allah keep our hearts tender and kind. Ameen. Wasalam

    • This "taking allies" has been horrifically abused by some modern day militant groups as well. They claim actually taking any form of aid from nonbelievers is by itself disbelief, something never accepted by early fuqaha. Infact early fuqaha didn't even consider the Muslim spy(spying is a tremendously transgression and betrayal) to be a disbeliever.

Misunderstandings in takfir are some of the most dangerous kinds. One one hand in the Ummah we have some ignorant and misunderstanding Muslims who have gone to the extent of declaring good things and self defense to be disbelief(horrific interpretation of the texts that is lightyears away from that of the fuqaha) and on the other hand we have some ignorant and misunderstanding Muslims who fail to affirm as disbelief what the Sahaba RA, the Salaf and every single faqih and alim in the entire history of the Ummah have affirmed as such.

We have both ignorance's in the Ummah!!! In fact it goes even worse than this, there are people in villages and so on that do not even know the name of the Messenger of Allah sallahualayhiwasalam and only know the title. I talked to a preteen in Quran reading class who did not even know the meaning of the Shahadah.

It is good to pray for celebrities and everyone's guidance and also be friendly to others.

As for the "marry a Jew or Christian but can't befriend one" this is a silly misinterpretation by modern day juhhal who do not understand the ayat and ahadith the way the early Muslims and fuqaha did.

It is sad that ignorance doesn't necessarily become widespread through lack of education but can also increase do to the preaching of some well intention-ed but ignorant Muslims themselves.

  5. Muslims are not allowedt marry present christians and jews . They were only allowed as long as they hld onto he techings of thier respective prophets. People should understand the meaning of people of books before interpretting.

    • Ceylan, you are mistaken. The Quran allows Muslim men to marry women of the People of the Book. At the time the Quran was revealed, the Christians were already worshiping Christ, and the Jewish belief was no different from what it is now. Yet the Quran allowed Muslim men to marry them. Perhaps you are the one who should study further.

      Wael
      IslamicAnswers.com Editor

    • Ccelan..............meaning of people of books before interpreting.

What book is that? What is your understanding of "people of the book".

    • i asked a different question sister. its not about marriage but i will present my understanding on that
there are two things in Quran in one verse it permits us to marry a Jewish, christian or any monotheist woman on the other side it forbids us marrying a person who associates or a mushrik.

now you can find few women among jews who r not mushrikeen, there is a group among jews who only pray and live a life with modesty they are monotheists the real ones not the zionists.

among Christians you may find the one who find a way through mary the other find a way through jesus both are firm on their one basic belief that jesus is the son of God . means both have the powers to provide just like God in some way or more than that. there are people in different societies and religions who have different beliefs you may also find a person who only believe in the existence of God and dont associate. while among the muslims who are just born into muslim families but associates for example Hazrat Ali will provide or is the source of giving through Allah. Data sahib Data Ganj Baksh will give us a son or child, they will accept our mannats so this is also a kind of shirk and we are not allowed to marry a mushrik.

in jews these days you can find a woman like this but among christians i have nt seen a person yet who donot associate but i dont claim that there will not be a monotheist among them . i mean the men who go abroad and want to have a white woman as a wife a, they give explanation that we can marry a christian. you can only marry a monotheist its simple as clear coz none of the books except Quran are saved they are edited so it necessary to be a monotheist.

      • All polytheists and disbelievers are forbidden to believing men and women but Allah made an exception for only two, Jewish and Christian women. This is the view of the Sahaba RA and the view of the scholars. Despite their kufr and shirk they are halal to Muslims under conditions.

However halal does not mean encouraged and we can see very dangerous consequences for Muslim children and Muslim marriages in this scenario! Furthermore there are multiple Muslim women who are unmarried so we must focus on relieving the suffering in our own community at this point in time.

So even though a Jew and Christian women are mushrik and disbelievers in the final Message of Islam, they are lawful under conditions however we must proceed with caution for the sake of the children and the sanctity of family and most importantly, for the final day.

As Allah aza wa jal says,

They have taken to themselves as lords, apart from Allah, their doctors and their monks and Al-Masih, (The Messiah) the son of Maryam; (Mary) and in no way were they commanded to worship (anyone) except One God; there is no god except He; All extolment be to Him, (He is) above whatever they associate (with Him).

Imam Ahmad, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Jarir At-Tabari recorded a Hadith via several chains of narration, from `Adi bin Hatim, may Allah be pleased with him, who became Christian during the time of Jahiliyyah. When the call of the Messenger of Allah reached his area, `Adi ran away to Ash-Sham, and his sister and several of his people were captured. The Messenger of Allah freed his sister and gave her gifts. So she went to her brother and encouraged him to become Muslim and to go to the Messenger of Allah .

        `Adi, who was one of the chiefs of his people (the tribe of Tai') and whose father, Hatim At-Ta'i, was known for his generosity, went to Al-Madinah. When the people announced his arrival, `Adi went to the Messenger of Allah wearing a silver cross around his neck. The Messenger of Allah recited this Ayah;
        اتَّخَذُواْ أَحْبَـرَهُمْ وَرُهْبَـنَهُمْ أَرْبَاباً مِّن دُونِ اللَّهِ
(They took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah). `Adi commented, "I said, `They did not worship them.''' The Prophet said,

        «بَلَى إِنَّهُمْ حَرَّمُوا عَلَيْهِمُ الْحَلَالَ وَأَحَلُّوا لَهُمُ الْحَرَامَ فَاتَّبَعُوهُمْ فَذَلِكَ عِبَادَتُهُمْ إِيَّاهُم»

(Yes they did. They (rabbis and monks) prohibited the allowed for them (Christians and Jews) and allowed the prohibited, and they obeyed them. This is how they worshiped them.)

  6. here i also want to mention about what the people of the book means they were chosen for fulfilling Allah promise ( the witness of the last prophet revealed in their books), his commands, his guidance on how to live our life (haram , halal things, prayers) they were not able to do it coz they transgressed they changed the book some how they used to feel proud that they are the descendants of the prophets and very much loved by Allah and if they do some sort of a wrong doing Allah will forgive them. on such kind of arrogance and disobedience Allah chose a different race, region for prophecy and among them a prophet was born to guide through the message of Allah. thats how Torah Injeel was saved in Quran and other commands, guidance is there in Quran as well. Quran tells us why they were replaced by Muslims and warn us not to feel proud on having it Coz Allah can replace us if we transgress. so now a days people who feel proud of being a Muslim and are very adamant they will go to heaven and others will go to hell the same jews used to think they are wrong. thats why i asked about marilyn monroe to which my friend confidently replied me she will go to hell.

    • Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh

We have to take a bit of look at history and ask ourselves why all Muslims agreed Islam is the only way t Jannah (for one who has heard the message) and only recently have some people started to say otherwise.

Nonetheless it is absolutely wrong for any Muslim at all to say he is going to Jannah! No Muslim knows his own fate because Allah says,

Then did they feel secure from the plan of Allah ? But no one feels secure from the plan of Allah except the losing people.

The Sahaba RA were most afraid of Allah but this did not prevent them from calling every nonbeliever to Islam so that Allah saves them from the punishment!

So there are two issues here-

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man said, “Indeed, a man loves to have beautiful clothes and shoes.” The Prophet said, “Verily, Allah is beautiful and He loves beauty. Arrogance means rejecting the truth and looking down on people.”

      Source: Sahih Muslim 91

Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim

A Muslim can be arrogant and reject the truth by saying nonbelievers who received the message of Islam and failed to enter it can still go to Jannah even when Allah and His Messenger have said that they cannot.

Or a Muslim can be arrogant and accept this truth but then say "this means I can look down upon nonbelievers" which is also arrogance because he doesn't know his own fate or whether the nonbelievers he looks down upon will enter Islam and die as good Muslims!

So we, in this religion of balance must take both issues into account. We need to understand that the fuqaha and Ulama are all on an absolutely consensus on this issue that there is no way to Jannah except by Islam and the interactions of Rasulullah sallahualayhiwasalam with Jews Christians and the rest of the mushrikeen confirm this fact.

As Allah aza wa jal says,

And whoever desires other than Islam as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.

It is truly Allah's decision who goes to Paradise and who goes to Jahannam and out of His mercy he revealed a Book and sent a Messenger to all of humanity to explain clearly what leads to Paradise and what leads to Jahannam so no one has the excuse to say "I did not know this would guarantee me punishment."
