Does he need to change his name?

Assalamualaikum.
I'm a muslim girl. I am going to marry a man who embraced islam. His name is 'Madan Kumar'. is it necessary to change his name?

    Congratulations on your upcoming nikah and to your fiancee on his conversion to Islam. Normally you only have to change your name when you convert if the meaning of your name is unislamic or goes against islam in some way. I have looked up the meaning on his name on some sites:

    Kumar \k(u)-mar\ as a boy's name is of Hindi and Sanskrit origin, and the meaning of Kumar is "male child".
    The meaning of the name Madan is God Of Love
    The origin of the name Madan is Indian (Sanskrit)

    The name Madan originates from one of the Hindu gods which of course goes against islam. Your fiancee should change his name as it has an unislamic meaning. Just advise him kindly and let him choose a good islamic name for himself.
