Islamic marriage advice and family advice

When can I say “I love you”?

Me and my partner have feelings towards each other. We both know that we love each other but we don't know if there is an appropriate time to say that we love each other.

Is it forbidden to say it before engagement or should we be engaged or married? when is it suitable to say it?

  1. Asalamoalaikum No name,
In Islam, having a girlfriend or boyfriend relationship is prohibited (haram). There are many reasons why but the most important being is that it leads to zina which leads to the disobedience of Allah swt. Therefore, expressing oneself in a loving manner with your "partner" before nikah is haram. If you are serious with one another with the intention to marry, then you should do so through proper channels and get your nikah performed so that everything you do or say to them is halal. Also, engagment has no Islamic standing, so although you may get engaged, please bear in mind you are still not married and you must abide by the Islamic guidelines if you are to meet with your potential spouse or talk to them (i.e.: do so in the prescence of a mahram).

I hope that answers your question.

    • Can I say I love you ?
I'm engaged when is the right time to say it ,is it allowed in Islam to say before marriage?

      • Asalamualaykum,

What matters the most is that you feel it and your actions show it...not that you say it. Wait until after marriage to do or say any such thing. You can love people for the sake of Allah in that you give every human being respect, but romantic love is for after marriage.

Like helpingsister said there is never ever going to be the right time to say 'I love you', it does'nt matter how much you are in love, how much you care and how passionate you may feel about a person unless you have performed a nikah with them.
Its as black and white as that! If you know you love someone in your heart, send a proposal to them, through the correct means- marry- afterwhich you can express your love as much as you like!

    good luck!
