Am I Allowed To Thread Or Wax While Fasting?

haram forbidden

Personal Beautification in Islam

Assalam-O-Alaikum everyone,

As the month of Ramadan has started,  so I really wanted to know about this. I am a freak about being tidy, clean and hygienic. I can't stand being dirty and all that stuff.

As I'm a girl, waxing, threading and other beauty related stuff are like my normal routine.

I only wanted to know that is waxing, threading and other  stuff allowed during fasting? Like most people say threading is not allowed, so I wanted to know if it is allowed or not?

Thank you.

Allah Hafiz.

  1. Salamualaikum,

Sister, Islam allows you to take care of your beauty and your appearance. You are allowed to remove hair from your body, EXCEPT for the eyebrows (and the hair from your head).

I can recall that I have read: Nothing is Haraam, until there is proof that it is Haraam, and everything is Halaal, until there is proof that it is Haraam.

It is Haraam for you to pluck you eyebrows according to the following Hadith:

    It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah
said: “Allaah has cursed the women who do tattoos and those who ask for tattoos to be done, those who ask for their eyebrows to be plucked, and the women ask for their teeth to be filed for the purpose of beautification, changing the creation of Allaah.”

A woman from the tribe of Bani
    Asad whose name was Umm
Ya’qoob heard of that and she came and said, “I have heard that you have cursed So and so and So and so.” He said, “Why should I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allaah [an error occurred while processing this directive] (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed and who are mentioned in the Book of Allaah?’

She said, “I have read what is between the two covers
[of the Qur’aan], and I did not find anything in it like what you have
said.” He said, “If you have read it,
have you not read that Allaah
says, ‘And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)’ [al-Hashr 59:7]?” She said, “Of course.” He said, “He forbade that.” She said, “I think
your wife does it.” He said, “Go
    and look.”

So she went and looked and she did not see what she was looking for. He said, “If she had been like that, she would not be with us.”

    Muslim, 2125

If you are not eating or drinking, or not deliberately vomiting, then you fast is not invalidated. (there are other rules in this though). To know what all invalidates fasts, read this:

    • salam brotherr waseem! i hope your fasting is going well. As usual uv given good advice. i have a question concerning what u just said. I have stopped waxing my eyebrows since i read and heard something of this nature on you tube, i knew about this before, a long time ago, but i didnt take heed, of course i knew about Allah then but i umm just ignored it i guess, so i have stopped waxing for sometime now except the middle, u know above the nose because i read its ok. Now my question is, what EXACTLY does it mean the curse of Allah? what's the curse? and now that i have stopped shaping it, will i be forgiven for the years i ignored the hadith??

    • Assalamualaikum .
Sorry but your answer could not give me the Exact answer for the question "Can we wax or thread while we are fasting ? " There are many misconceptions regarding this and i need an explanation ! Please !! JazaKallahu Khair

    • can you thread you face though??

  2. Whenever you look into the mirror or think that Allah Has Created you beautiful, just say this Dua:

Allahumma anta ahsanta khalqi fa ahsin khulqi.

(O Allah, You have made my physical constitution good, so make my attitude and behaviour good also)

  3. Wa Alaikum as Salam wa Rahmatullah,

Sister pinkbubblegum, my fasts are going great by the Grace of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. I hope yours are fine, too.

Regarding your question, we should first understand what being cursed means:

Being cursed means being cast far away from goodness. And it was said that being cursed by Allah means being cast far away from Him, and being cursed by people means being reviled and prayed against by them. Everyone whom Allah has cursed is far away from His mercy and deserves punishment, so he is doomed. End quote from Lisaan al-‘Arab, 13/387-388

The one who is cursed is either a kaafir, who is cast far away from the mercy of Allah, to the punishment of Allah, or he is a Muslim but he did an action for which he deserves to be cursed, such as drinking alcohol, consuming riba (usury), reviling his parents and other grave sins. This cursing only results from major sins, but that does not mean that he will abide in Hell for eternity, because if one who believes in Tawheed dies believing in Tawheed and as a Muslim, even if he enters Hell for sins he committed, he will not remain there for eternity. This is the view of Ahl as- Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa‘ah. Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Being cursed means being cast far away from the mercy of Allah; there is no curse for doing any action except major sins. Hence the scholars said: everything for which the punishment is being cursed is a major sin. End quote from Duroos wa Fataawa al-Haram al-Madani, p. 57 (islamqa)

Also to mention, Shaitaan was cursed because if disobeyed Allah. Now you can probably imagine what happens if Allah curses someone.

Allah is The Creator and to Him we all HAVE TO return. Who will aid the person who is cursed by Allah? If Allah is Angry, who will aid in such a situation? Subhanallah, it is Allah Who Has the Power to do all things in whichever way He is Pleased with, and He does whatever He wishes to do. No one can question Him whatsoever. Be he a King in this World or a beggar,he is subjugated to Allah, his Lord.

Allah is The Protector, and in His Protection lies the success.

Allah forgives all sins on Tawbah, for whoever He Wishes. He Is The Most Just and The Most Wise.

When you committed a sin and you were unaware that it is Haraam, insha Allah, you won't be held accountable for it. But if you were aware, then it is a sin. You need to do Tawbah for it, and hope from Allah that He Will forgive you.

    And Allah Knows Best

    • Whoa! i knew it was somthing bad, however, i didnt know it was to that extent 😮 waxing ur brows is SO NOT worth it!!

      thanks for the info 🙂
      salam.

      • I didnt know either that threading or shaping eyebrows wasn't allowed. This is going to be hard for me to stop doing but i will try

        • Sister, perhaps this is what Allah is testing you with. To see whether you obey His commands or you do not.
A sacrifice, which could help you earn the Pleasure of The Lord of all that exists.

I don't know if this Aayah is applicable here, because it is concerned with charity. But just read it, and insha Allah, you'll find it easy:

          In Surah Aal Imraan:

By no means shall you attain Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc., it means here Allah's Reward, i.e. Paradise), unless you spend (in Allah's Cause) of that which you love; and whatever of good you spend, Allah knows it well.

When Abu Talha (RU) heard this verse, he gave his best garden and a well in charity immediately. (Muslim , Bukhari)

Similarly Zaid-bin Harith (RU) gave a horse in charity since he loved it the most. (Ibn Jareer, Tabri)

It may be straying from the subject, but I thought it has a lesson to be learnt

          • you are right reading this thread/post i have also learnt a lot thank you

          • Bro...

I read all your posts... And they are realy taking me out from all this beauty things...well I have being doing my eyebrowse from very long...
And there was a mufti who came to my country and said that its not permisible 4 a girl to do eyebrowse until she's married....and but a girl can remove some hair in between the eyebrowse

Well then I realy can't stand my eye browse not done ....
So I will just work out with remving my eye browse from middle...

Well is putting bleach on face allowed?
I mean coz if its alowed then shaping eye brow is not realy important

            So is bleach permisible?

          • Sister Juweriya,

I am not aware of it, but I read that is is harmful for the skin. I am not sure, though. If it is so, you should not use it. There's also a fatwa in this regard, but I am not sure if this is what you mean by when you say "bleach":

            http://www.islamweb.net/emainpage/index.php?page=showfatwa&Option=FatwaId&Id=174123

Regarding plucking of the eye brows, whether you are married or not, you are not allowed to do so. Maybe you got the mufti wrong. You can anyhow remove the hair between your eyebrows, it is not Haraam. And Allah Knows Best

            Muhammad Waseem
            IslamicAnswers.com Editor

  4. Well... Am sorry to cut but that mufti he is a very big aalim... And he comes to our country every ramzan...
Well... No bleach hasn't harmed my sisters skin ever I wanted to ask if its permisible or not...

And that mufti has replied to all us girls that... If a women when she's married she can her eye browse... If her husband says so... She's alowed to atract her husband in any way... Well I don't know about that... Bcause am too smal for marriage so I don't need to knw now...

Well I hope I stop doing eye browse... And I will... Inshallah...
And waxing in any body part is permisible right?

  5. I read this link.. And it says its not permisible if it is used to whiten someone...

But I don't want to whiten my self I just wanted to put it on some of the hairs on my face

So that I wantt to knw if its alwed or ?

  6. If what you are saying is true, then I doubt if this man is actually a Mufti. Because if he was, he wouldn't give a fatwa against the explicit Hadith of Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam.
Or perhaps you got it wrong. He might have mentioned the other hair from the body. Yes you are allowed to wax other hair from your body, but not that of your head, nor eyebrows.

    And Allah Knows Best

  7. No there aint any doubt that he aint a mufti... Allah knows best ...
Thankx and I will try and do the good once 🙂

    Jazakallah:)

  8. It is prohibition of plucking the eyebrows dosent matter married or single or even if the woman does it for her husband is clear from another narration:

A'isha reported that a woman from the Ansar married her daughter who had lost her hair because of illness. She came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and said: Her husband wants that false hair should be added to her head. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Don't, the woman who adds false hair has been cursed.

    Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5205; Muslim, 2123

So it is very clear from this narration that the prophet may peace be upon him did not allow this woman who had lost her hair to add false hair to her head even if her husband wants her to do that for his own pleasure, and there is no difference between adding false hair or plucking the eyebrows because the prophet may peace be upon him has cursed them both because they are "changing the creation of Allah", and the prophet may peace be upon him did not allow women to do these things even if their own husbands want them to be done.

    Allah knows best.

    • Asslalamo'alaikum. I have read that Hadith of Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihe Wa Aalehi Wa Ashabehi Wasallam Wa Barik Alaih but what I read was that mother wanted to add false hair to her daughter on the occasion of her marriage nor did the husband asked her to add them.
      ALLAH KNOWS THE BEST!
May we remain on the straight path and away from what ALLAH SUBHANAHO TA'ALA AND HIS PROPHET (S. A. W. W. W.) DISLIKES AND NEAR TO WHAT ALLAH (S. W. T.) AND HIS PROPHET (S. A. W. W. W.) LIKES. AMEEN

  9. Ohh... Okay thankx I will keep all this in my mind..n well about husbands and all am nt intrsted lool...
I just wanted to know abt my self am nly 16 lol...
    Jazakallah nadia...

  10. Dear Brothers and sisters,

I asks for some good advice about the situation i am in. For a long time i have been in live with the this guy from school. His not the moat attracive person in the world but for some reason i liked him which then accumulated to the point that i love him.

We have never talked to each other but he has showin me many signs that he likes me which was what got me into him. He is loud, crazy in yhe cutes way , and funny. He sent his friends to tell me what a nice and beautiful respectful muslim girl i am and he has always backed me up when i got on trouble or any type of situaltion.

He is the only thing that is ever on my mind. When i eat, sleep, talk, hang out with friend he always on my mind. But these emotions started when i was on the 7th grade and now i am moving on to 11th grade its no joke that this love is really i havwnt seem him in a while after middle school that was the kiddin of the end of us espcieally because we wwbt to different high schools. But the most depressing factor is that i never told him i loved him or even gave him signs of my love to him. He suffers thinking he is alone i the love story when he really isnt.

I cant live on like this for ever all the moments and memories keep playing in my hes over and over again and its sooooo depressing that i kno he feels the same about me but differet factors of our livesbare blocking us from being happy.

  11. well am not such a girl who plucks hair of eyebrow .. but i want to know that can we have a haircut during fasting even though my hair are not damage?

    • Salaams,

There is no prohibition in cutting the hair on your head at any time. It doesn't necessarily need to be damaged. If you want a haircut, get one.

      -Amy
      IslamicAnswers.com Editor

  12. Asslam ul allikum brothers and sisters, perhaps we are allowed to wax our body during ramadan right ? Not plucking eybrows and a haircut, what about upperlips ? I heard we are allowed to do upperlips because it represents the manhood.. ? I also heard that if u get married u can get ur eyebrows done to please your husband. I searched alot about it and i figured out that we are allowed once we get married to attract your husband. I even read the hadiths on it.

    • Salaams,

You can remove the hair from any part of the face except the eyebrows. There is nothing that says when you marry you can pluck eyebrows then. The hadith that says such an act is cursed was for married and non-married women alike. If you read any hadith contrary to that, I am willing to bet they are inauthentic.

      -Amy
      IslamicAnswers.com Editor

  13. As SalamoAlaikum.

I apologize for intruding however, I've noticed a contradiction between what Muhammad Waseem and Amy said. Secondly, I don't think the name Amy sits well when seeing it being one of the editors answering fiqh related questions, purely due to the fact that it isn't an Islamic name. I'm sure you'll see where I'm going with this. A person with a non-muslim name responding with contexts to Islam and fiqh? Yeah, I don't see it either.
Anyway, back to the subject I initiated with, the conflict between the two is on the matter of getting a haircut. You haven't specified what sort since majority of the public who views this will gather that a haircut of any form is permissable although its not. Styling your hair by getting it cut in different lengths, bangs, steps etc is not allowed and it changes the face structure the way waxing the eyebrows does. The only haircut one can get is trimming the split ends. Thats it.
Bleach is allowed. The guy didn't understand because, well, its a girl thing after all. So, to clarify the difference between whitening and brightening, bleach will not change your complexion, it will only lighten the hair on your face giving an overall lighter effect to your skin. Its just like dying your hair, which is halaal afterall, if any color besides black is used i.e.
Thirdly, a girl mentioned about loving a na-mehram boy up there. Its not love. Having gone through the phase you have, its advisable if you lower your gaze and abstain from interacting with na-mehram men since it takes you a step closer to the manipulative ploys of shaytaan and a step further away from Allah. Now, what self respecting muslim woman would want that, right? I really don't think there should be any doubt since our quran blatantly mentions that its obligatory on both man and woman to lower their gaze and protect their private parts. Allah will not subside where haraam love exists so try your best, however hard it may seem, to remove it.
May Allah bless you all and help you with attaining taqwa and istaqamat Aameen.
Allah knows best and may He forgive me if I said something wrong in the abovementioned points.

    • Assalaamualaikam

Please refrain from making judgements about others based on their names. Sister Amy is a respected and knowledgeable editor of this site - she deserves to be treated as such. Whether we have names you deem suitable or not has no bearing on our ability to learn about Islam and give advice on Islamic matters. You probably wouldn't think my name (IRL) is Islamic enough, either - should I keep quiet and not give advice on things I have studied or of which I have had experience?

As more and more people around the world come to learn about Islam and become Muslim, you're going to meet a lot of people who don't have traditionally Islamic names. If you start judging people negatively because of that, you're going to miss out on a lot of opportunities to share knowledge and learn from others.

  14. ASAK

I am a person who regularly threads my eye brows , Until I came across this hadith . I was finding online on wheyher we can do a facial in ramzaan . A facial is applying creams on your face and neck with steam given for sometime and remove black heads from ur face . Is this applicable while one fasts.

Also I heard a sister say she has read some hadiths which state that shaping eye brows is allowed after marriage , can you please give those hadiths as to where have you read the.

    • There is no such hadit like that after married you can thread eyebrow tell you sister to give prove from hadits.

  15. reducing eyebrows by cutting is allowed?

  16. ASAK Namira

A sister from this blog mentioned about those hadiths .

  17. I have heard so many different things about whether it's haram or not. Like for example some scholars say that it isn't haram if you are doing it for the men in the family for example: brothers, husband, and father. "it is prohibited to pluck them unless they look abnormal." "To look and feel clean and beautiful is not haram."
I also heard it's about your intentions. If your intention is look pleasing in your husband's eye it isn't haram. Please let me know about whether it is or it isn't and when it's permissible. Thanks

  18. I have another question.. Similar to the one above
Is trimming of the eyebrows allowed?
And also if one does not do their eyebrows are they allowed to fill in their eyebrows, thus changing their overall appearance of their eyebrows?

  19. I used to pluck my brows for my husband because he likes it. When I came to know that it is haraam and our Islam doesn't allow then I asked my husband to convince him to not pluck the brows, he once in a minute said ok don't pluck again ever if Islam doesn't allow..!!! So I just want to say that it's our responsibility to follow the rules and regulations of Islam by heart..!!!

  20. Asslamualikum,
