My husband gambles and doesn’t understand that it’s haram.
Assalam O Alaikum,
My husband gamble, he plays lotto numbers every week. I try talking to him to stop all this but it's no use. Sometimes I think we have problems and the bad luck because of this.
My life is mess, please help.

I don't know the full extent of the situation. Is it an addiction or is it in his eyes having fun? If it's his idea of having fun then before I quote ayaat and hadith I like to talk of taweed. Many times when someone does not want to stop doing something they should not do or they don't want to do something that they should do like wear hijab, it's usually a taweed /iman problem and not a " not knowing the Quran talks about this problem."
When a person knows Allah that person accepts Allah, but if someone does not know him then they argue about his ayaat with no knowledge and whoever is in that situation is in far misguidance. So taweed is the foundation of this religion.In fact, it is the foundation of the foundation.
In a famous hadith the messenger of Allah(pbu) send Muath ibn Jabl to the people of Yemen on a dawa mission to teach them Islam. What was the first thing he told Muath to talk about. Was it race? Was it politics? Was it philosophy?Was it logic? Was it about having fun or doing whatever you want to do?
No, the first thing he was ordered to tell them was to worship Allah and not to associate anything with him. Then he told him if they accept that, then tell them there are 5 prayers in the morning and night that is upon them. He explained tawwed first (who is Allah, what does he want ect..)
He may have a taweed issue and if he has a taweed issue it's a good chance you got a taweed issue.So I would like you both as a family to learn about tawheed.
Once you and him know your lord, once you both know what he wants from the human creation,once you know why he created us and you understand what he does as Lord. Then you will both begin to accept Allah. Also, you should know what Allah does to " his" creation who lift up their right hand and extends their middle finger at him. Gambling is like shooting a bird at Allah. We seek refuge in Allah from his anger .
After you understand all of that then I can present ayaat from the Quran to you and him, but if you don't understand Allah and taweed it's a waste of time giving proof because he will just argue about it all. Start with taweed and iman same as you would with a non-Muslim build the faith first. Once he has faith let him know what the faith ask the believer to do. You need to tell him that it is Haram and show him the proofs for the same. Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'ala says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), gambling, al-Ansaab [sacrifices for idols, etc.] and al-Azlaam [arrows for seeking luck or decision] are an abomination of Shaytaan’s handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful.
and
Shaytaan wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drink) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from al-salaat (the prayer). So, will you not then abstain?”[al-Maa’idah 5:90-91]
In an authentic hadith of Bukhari the Prophet sallallahu alaihe wasallam is reported to have said, "If one person says to another, 'Come lets gamble.' (regardless of whether he acts upon it or not) then he shall be liable of committing a sin; and the compensation for that sin will be to give Sadaqah."
In Surah al Baqarah, Allah says in Aayah 219:
They ask you (O Muhammad ) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: "In them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they ought to spend. Say: "That which is beyond your needs." Thus Allah makes clear to you His Laws in order that you may give thought."
And Allah's Messenger Sallallahu 'Alaihi wasallam says:
“Whatever intoxicates in large quantities, then a small quantity of it is also forbidden”. (Sunan Abu Dawud, No. 3673, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa’i and others).
Through this, we can say that the above mentioned Aayah having Gambling mentioned with Alcohol has same ruling as in this Hadith, Allah knows Best.

Show him these proofs and more if you find, insha Allah
Further, if this does not work, have a person who has influence over him, to talk to him about this matter and advise him about this being Haraam.
