Mental Health and Psychiatric Medications?

Beautiful meadow with flowers

Assalamu alaikum my dear siblings in Islam,

I have been struggling with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and recently started medication for it.

I hope that it is appropriate to share experiences with medications on this platform. Please advise.

Does anybody, either a patient or doctor, have an experience or expertise they would like to share, so that we may spread beneficial knowledge among the Ummah InshaAllah?

My wife is currently taking Zyprexa as she relapsed after many years of managing without medication. I think she could have managed to avoid relapsing so severely if she had started medication a lot sooner.

There is a cultural taboo against mental medication but hopefully that is changing.

Like all the other organs in our body, our brains can have issues and Inshallah medication is one of the resources we have.

In my wife's case, I am very certain that her analytical part of brain gets dominated by emotions (primarily fear), so to counter that she forces herself to study analytical subjects (maths primarily).

    • Asalamualaykum,

Thank you for sharing your story...that is so interesting! I never thought about a mental illness being the result of emotions overtaking logic...but it sounds like that what your wife experiences. Alhamdullilah that she is now on appropriate medication!

Believe it or not, I too take Zyprexa...in my case for psychosis. I have tried to get off of it many times due to side effects, but I never feel as good as I do when I'm on Zyprexa, so I'm on it for life! I feel so blessed to have found this drug....it took a lot of prayer and patience.

It's so important that we open up discussion on this topic within the Islamic community, as I believe that many people who have faith wrongly assume that they don't need to take drugs...that Allah will heal them...all the while ignoring the MEANS that Allah has created to healing and cure...professional doctors and medications with decades of experience and research behind them.

I pray that your wife returns to a completely normal existence and is content with her cure!!

      Best,
