How can I combat my laziness for prayer?

Man in prayer

I am 14-year-old Muslim girl. I need some advice on laziness. I really like to pray and really want to pray. I know how to pray in medium level. But I don't pray. The only reason I don't pray is I am too lazy to do the ablution (tahorat) five times a day before every prayer.

I always start praying with admiration and after 1 or 2 weeks I stop praying because I was too lazy to do the ablution before every prayer. I always apologize to God for that, but I can't change. When I was in 2nd grade I started praying, my grandma taught me. Then I prayed for maybe like 6 or a little more month, and then stopped praying.

Then again I started praying in 3rd grade for like 2-3 month, then again stopped. Then started, stopped. Started stopped. I began to realize that I was getting too lazy every time after I start. I think shaytan is doing it to stop me from praying. Sometimes I cry because I can't make it. My mom says that I have to keep praying even though I am being lazy, or don't want to, for like a 4-6 month, then she says I will get used to it, but before I get used to it, before 1 month I stop praying again.

I love praying I really want to pray, but something inside me is being lazy. How can I stop being lazy to do the ablution before every namaz/prayer? I ask God for forgiveness.

I hope, INSHAALLAH, God will help me.

    hi im janina
i read your writing and i actually felt bad and at the same time it makes me feel motivated, actually i have the same attitude just like you i really want to change it and i really want to pray but because of lazziness it hinders me in praying ,but i know i can make it by thinking of Allah(swt) WE JUST HAVE TO PRACTICE PUtting in our mind AND heart that its a must and we must do it for the sake of ALLAH(SWT). and actually i just ask help from ALLAH(SWT) TO just give me strength and remembrance to make sure that i will not forget him and that i would not be lazy..thats all that i can help to you..i hope it could help you..assalamualaykum

    • First I would like to tell you, jazaakalah for admitting difficulties. To tell you the truth I don't pray and am trying to, thus earlier I came onto another article and it gave me very useful advice.

First you have to learn to love Alah. At first I too (the same as the other commenters as that website) THOUGHT that we didn't quite understand what that meant. But as I read on, the writer explained that you must THINK about all the things God created and gave us. He gave us people we NEED, people that LOVE us sheep and animals to EAT, Water to drink. Then thing of the things he created that make our surrounding beautiful, like the mountains, the grass, the Galaxy, space, water, the earth, other human beings to give us company. Then as you realize all of this you should say subhana Alah, or Masha Allah. Slowly but surely you are taking tiny steps to getting to the habit of pray.

You must also know that God is very forgiving and is merciful. But also fair and will give his punishment if he needs to. Mabey you should also see how much stronger Alah is than you and your difference in power. He has lived and will always live forever. He doesn't need a family. He is the creator of this vast world and everything in it. He is the creator of the never ending space and galaxy and planet and stars and the moon. He created us. He owns the heavens and the sky. He owns everything. He doesn't get sick, EVER, etc.

Slowly, you will start to think of Allah more often and eventually remember him everywhere, mention his name more, but of course not in the bathroom, you should thank Allah more, say inshaallah, do a duhaa before going to sleep or taking a test, ask for his help. Then Allah will think of you more. And so you will learnt to LOVE worshiping Allah and start praying.

If you think that shaytaan is making you be lazy, then say authubilahiminashaytaan aragim and spit to your left three times. You must also remember how lucky we are that we only have to pray five times a day. Originally it was I think 50000 or 5000 times a day until the Prophet peace be upon him begged Allah to make it 5.

I really hope this helps and guides you through the right path Ameen.

      • Salams CandiedApple,
The original prayers was not 50,000 or 5,000 it was 50 prayers and the prophet made it 5 because Musa AS said that your people will not be able to handle that many prayers. My nation and your nation are simalar.

Although if you look at it 5x10=50 so for praying 1 prayer it is as if you prayed 10 prayers. God knew that we were not able to pray 50 prayers but HE just wanted to show us the weight that prayer holds in His eyes.

Sorry if I went on a tangent. I hope this benefited you and anyone else reading this.

        - Imran Ahmed

  2. Assalam o alikum,

I always try to find answers in the Qur'an first so please Sister read below:

"When some trouble touches man, he cries unto his Lord, turning to Him inrepentance: but when He bestows a favor upon him as from Himself, (man) forgets what he cried and prayed for before..."
    Surah Az-Zumar 39:8

"Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the Middle Prayer; and stand before Allaah in a devout (frame of mind)."
    Surah Al-Baqarah 2:238

"O you who believe! Celebrate the praises of Allaah, and do this often; and glorify Him morning and evening. He it is Who sends blessings on you, as do His angels, that He may bring you out from the depths of Darkness into Light: and He is full of Mercy to the Believers."
    Surah Al-Ahzab 33:41-43

"And you be not like those who forgot Allaah; and He made them forget their own souls! Such are the rebellious transgessors!"
    Surah Al-Hashr 59:19

Sister these are divine words of our Creator, it is a guide to the Believers. The Book tells us of the Rewards if we strive to live our lives according to what Allash (swt) had sent us. It also warns us of the horrible punishments if we deliberately fail to follow this way of life. Establishing regular prayers is very important in a life of a faithful Muslim. No excuse is good enough to stop. Even ill people or elderly still pray. They might not be able to go down on their knees but sit on the chair - but they still pray! MashaAllaah.
Dear Sister, Allaah does not need our prayers, we need our prayers as a testimonial to our Lord that we do what He asks of us. Keeping regular prayers is important for various reasons. Those 5 mins 5 times a day is the 5 little times i get to stop whatever im doing to remember, thank and ask for forgivness from Allaah (swt). You should think of it as a blessing, not a chore.
The rewards vs punishments should motivate you.
Dont give in to being lazy, get up and pray. Even if we prayed all day and all night we wouldnt be able to give enough thanks to Allaah (swt). Its only 5 mins 5 times a day. You can do it! The rewards and blessings are countless.
The more you pray, the less likely you will sin.
InshaAllaah you will become better and better in your prayers.

    Allaah knows best!

  3. Assalamualaikum dear sister,

I feel sorry to hear what you feel about your laziness to offer prayer because of feeling lazy to have ablution. We all know that it is obligatory to have ablution before performing any prayer. This laziness is a shaytan's whisper my dear innocent sister. What you need to do is try hard to fight your laziness. Shaytan always try their best to make us go astray. Offering prayer is the greatest thing we can do to closely interact with Allah.

You've attained the age of where a girl is obligatory to offer prayer so when you leave it with no acceptable reason, it is counted as a big sin dear. Besides, we also know that there is no reason which can be accepted to miss any prayer, Allah makes things easy for us. When we are sick, it is still a must to perform prayer by adjusting the condition of ourselves, if we are not able to stand, it is ok to pray while sitting, if we are not able to sit, it is ok to pray while lying down.

So, if the reason why is it hard for you to offer prayer is because of laziness then you have to be bold to yourself to fight such feeling. Don't think of it as a burden but think of it as a need. Allah doesn't need us to pray but it is us who need Allah and we can get closer to Him through offering prayer. Think of how merciful Allah has been with us, we should be shy to make a reason of laziness when it comes to prayer. How will we suppose to live at ease while we are away from things which can bring us closer to Him. So, my dear sweet sister, start from now on, believe in yourself, you can do that. Beautify yourself with your good akhlak, Allah loves you so welcome His love by worshiping to Him.

May Allah help you and have mercy on you. Amin.

  4. Sister,

Its so easy to get over this. You have to know your weaknesses. Why you do not like to make wudu? it is water that's scarey? Too cold? boring? Wake Wudu and think about the issues you are having. I think a can help you to over come this very easily. Get excited over water fitness. http://workoutsforyou.com/water.htm. Just to get more motivation to do wudu.

You should learn about when you can wipe over socks to make your wudu easier. Also even though you don't feel like doing wudu. Keep your time commitment with Allah. Instead of giving up praying. Spend the time about reading about Wudu. And keep telling your self I love making wudu. It works. I did a course on changing habits. I can help you change this habit over next 3 to 4 months. So learn about Wudu, think about all the rewards of wudu. like you say to yourself I love Allah and to show that love I pray to Allah. To pray to Allah I have to prepare and my perpetration is wudu,

I do this kind of thing on a regular basis

    I hope it helps.

  5. Salaam sister, the above advice is great, another thing you can do is a cognitive exercise which may help you, now the basis is to have a love or something you care about, in this case you say you love praying which is great masha'Allah.
When it comes to making wudhu and you feel lazy, imagine yourself at the end of the day saying i prayed 5 namaaz today, i am the best and no-one in this world is better than me, then think if i miss this one, then i only can pray 4, so im not the best, and so many are better than me, they getting more rewards etc., your brain works in a way in which it achieves to be dominant in everything, so by changing how you think about missing namaaz, you will feel the urge and get energy to' be the best' make wudhu and pray, since you already have the love of namaaz. once you do this fo a week and be succesful and pray 5times, the following week think to yourself, i have prayed my 5 namaaz for the past week, how can i break my record i have to pray, because if i dont and break the record then i am a failure, and as before your mind will provide you with the urge and energy to get up and pray. i used this technique for my fajr namaaz, after a while it became normal, because your mind and internal body clock adapt, so try this and it may well work for you.

All the best, i admire your enthusiasm and questions at such a young age, masha'Allah your a good muslimah, and i pray that may Allah guide you and help you to stay on the good path. Ameen

    • Using this approach also creates a feeling of guilt when you miss or consider not praying, which is great because it gives you even more motivation.

  6. As I was reading the english translation of the Holy Qur'an, I came across a du'a by the Prophet Abraham contained in Surah 14, verse 40:

Rabbij 'alni mukimassala tiwamin zurriyati, rabbana wataqabbal du'ai.

This means: "My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication."

I had the same problem, but when I started supplicating this du'a every after prayer and until now, my laziness was gone. I am now steadfast with my prayers and I have never been remiss paying my missed prayers.

  8. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said :((The one who lazily gets up for prayer and feels that the prayer is hard for him to offer, Allah hates this person to worship Him))Which means that the prayer is not a FORCE or pressure on yourself .But O Muslim brothers and sisters THE DESIRES of this world are useless and out of the limits of Allah. And the main reason of laziness in prayer is TO CARE ABOUT THE DESIRES OF THIS WORLD, O Muslim brothers and sisters if you want to prevent yourself from the laziness of getting up and praying and thinking that prayer is a bridge on your head JUST FORGET THE DESIRES OF THIS WORLD because this world is just an exam given to us and actually this world is not the suitable life which TRUE MUSLIMS deserve our life is PARADISE so wait because Allah said in the Qur'an ((ALLAH IS WITH THE PATIENT)) in Arabic it's (ان الله مع الصابرين ) and you can check it in the Qur'an .So,just forget the desires of this world and one day sit alone and raise up your hands seeking forgiveness from Allah and say in your DUA "O Allah I am a Muslim and i have surrendered my self to YOU,So please give me THE GUIDANCE TO THE RIGHT PATH (HIDAYAH)" actually the word Muslim means "I SURRENDERED" and the word Islam means "TO SURRENDER" so,give up (surrender yourself to Allah) and say O Allah I don't care about ((CARS,WOMEN,LOVE,WOMEN,MUSIC,DRUGS)) = DESIRES OF THE WORLD but I need your Hidayah. And if you got the hidayah then you are the most lucky person and Hidayah is like treasure which can not be given to anyone except those who really ask from there heart to be given it to them and once you got Hidayah then you are the most most most most lucky person and you may become a scholar and teach people Islam because hidayah (the guidance to the right path) automatically leads you to search things in Islam and learn Islam and have an ordinary life without laziness and my advice is that "WHO KNEELS BEFORE ALLAH, CAN STAND BEFORE ANYONE" which means you will never face difficult problems in your life which you can't face or control and you will always feel your heart and lungs cold ALWAYS

The one who dosent perform prayers (Salat) will receive Fifteen punishments

FROM SAYINGS (HADITH) OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD (Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam)

    (Removed by Editor)

    • Nadia, while your intention is good and it's always nice to remind people of the importance of Salat, we must be careful about what we quote from the Messenger of Allah (sws). The hadith you copied (which I have deleted) is known to be fabricated:

The hadeeth, “Whoever neglects prayer, Allaah will send fifteen punishments upon him, six in this world, three when he is dying, three in the grave and three when he emerges form the grave…” is a fabricated (mawdoo’) hadeeth which is falsely attributed to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Concerning this hadeeth Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, in the magazine al-Buhooth al-Islamiyyah (22/329): With regard to the hadeeth which the author of this pamphlet attributes to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning the punishment of the one who does not pray, and which says that fifteen punishment will be sent upon him etc., this is one of the fabricated ahaadeeth that are falsely attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as was stated by the scholars (may Allaah have mercy on him) such as al-Haafiz al-Dhahabi in Lisaan al-Meezaan, and al-Haafiz ibn Hajar and others.

Similarly the Standing Committee issued a fatwa, no. 8689, declaring this hadeeth to be false, as it says in Fataawa al-Lajnah, 4/468.

  11. Thank you brother Wael to correct me, but poem was nice anyways I will be careful next time.

  12. Sister read this poem if you feel lazy to read salah:

    What Prayer is
These words I jot down cos I shudder with fear
At the thought that young Muslims can sleep without prayer
That to close ones eyes can be as easy as pie
Thinking that prayer is a ritual, outdated, should die

You my friend, you must be as dumb as a log,
For you have forsaken ur freedom, to be lead like a dog!
Have you the faintest idea what will happen to you
When you rot in your grave with the worms gnawing thru

    When your body is dusting
    Your flesh rotted away
    "GAME OVER" is flashing,
And no more credits to play!

Then the sun will explode and the mountains will sway
And the whole of creation will rise on that day!
The angels will fly, like moths to a flame
And you'll tear from the earth, to explain ur life's game!

Blackened to a char will be the skin on ur face
Your friends will desert you , there won't be a trace
Iblis will be laughing, with a stitch on his side
Bcoz you were too STUPID, to get off his ride

The wealth of this world, took you for its bride
Its too late friend, its HELL for you inside
A fire so hot, that the boulders will burn
Like a match exploding, it'll soon be your turn.

If only you had that chance to repent
You'd soon reconsider all the time that you'd spent
And there will stand people, against whom you did tease
B'coz their sajdah did scare you, filled you with unease

While you tried to disown them, like a infectious disease,
Now you toss in the flames, while they cool in the breeze
In the line of eternity, ur life is a dot hundred years
Is all that you've got, 5 minutes of prayer!

    Not worth the time ?
    You've committed the greatest crime!
Prayer is not for your God
    O! Fear our Lord!

When you put that big head on the humblest of dust
Its your heart that you clean, all tarnished with rust!
You connect ur soul wiz creations' Great Light
Even the darkest of hearts can be left shining bright

You remove all the sin, and Shaitan's whispering words
Slash evil's hold, with the greatest of swords.
Prayer is the path from earth to the sky
From a caterpillar you'll become a bright butterfly.

Prayer makes you remember that you ain't all that hot
And that your life really starts, when your flesh starts to rot
Prayer is that link to the mother from the womb
Prayer is the guardian that protects you in the tomb.

Prayer untangles your life, like a comb thru your hair
Against the fire of hell, it's the only cloak you can wear
So understand friend! To skip prayers is not cool
Its so stupid, so mad, you must be a fool

It's like crossing a desert without water to drink
Just open your eyes friend, just sit back and think!
This world is a lie, this world is game
Like a poisonous snake, which you never can tame

And just as you turn your back on what's right
There is sure something to bite
Fangs will leap from the darkness
    Leading you to sadness

As you lie in ur coffin, facing the sky,
Your life will flash past, a twinkle in ur eye
You'll scream as the truth is slowly unveiled
Its too late, mate. This one you've failed.

I hope this finds you close to Allah & in the best of health and Iman, Ameen.

    • Wow, really inspirational, sister, you helped me a lot because I feel the same way this girl does.

      Also, that poem.
THAT POEM MAY HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

      • My God! Beautiful! Overwhelmed to see you choose to do something so fruitful with your talents. Inspired. MashaAllah!

  13. The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to make a du’a:

    اللّهُمَّ إنِّي أعُوذُبِكَ مِن العَجزِ وَ الكَسلٍ

    Transliteration: Allahumma inniy a’oothubika min al-ajzi wal-kasli
Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in you from incapability and laziness.
Why is this du’a important? For two reasons:

Laziness is an attribute of munafiqeen. If this wasn’t bad enough, being lazy leads to procrastination, which leads to its own set of problems.
It’s common these days for people to say “I can’t do it.” Like “I can’t pray at work,” or “I can’t achieve X.” The Prophet (salallahu alayhi wa sallam) would say a’oothubillah to that kind of talk. Think about it!
    Action Plan:

Memorize this du’a and make it every day in your sujood in every salaah. You have the Arabic, transliteration, and translation–you have no excuse not to do it!
Share your tips. What other tips and tricks do you use to overcome laziness and procrastination? Let us know in the comments!

  14. Please remember, you are not the only one. We all have that problem of laziness either it is prayer or do house work. May Allah accept our dua, Ameen

Allâhumma innî acûdhu bika minal-ajzi wal-kasli wal-jubni wal-harami wal-bukhli, wa a’udhbika min adhabil qabri, wa a’udhubika fitnatil mahya walmamat.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from the torments of grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trials and tribulations of life and death.

  15. Asthahfirullah!!!thnxs brother 4 ur valuable advic...that same problem was affected by me..but nw i am sure that i can do it ....subhaanallah!realy thnxs...salam bayya

  16. Assalamualaikum sisters,
It is usually not the action of going to prayer that I deal with laziness..it is usually during the prayer and keeping my mind focused..if anyone else has difficulty with this, what sometimes helps me is imagining the hell fire when I am praying to instill the fear of Allah (SWT) in my heart so that I may snap out of it and start concentrating again. It also might help to know that the amount of concentration one has on salah, determines the amount of rewards s/he receives.

I hope this was of help to someone!:)

  17. Assalam alaykum sister,

you could try to do your ablution together with somebody you know, maybe a parent or a sibling, or a friend, and pray on your own (you won't feel any pressure to pray in a way that is pleasing to someone else if you pray on your own, and you can withdraw to yourself and pray to God wholeheartedly). Then you won't feel as unmotivated to do ablution, if the other person does just the same. Sit down for prayer and focus on everything you have, your infinite blessings and the people you love most, and make up your mind to pray as a means of thanking for all of that. Try to say your words most heartfelt, to make your movements most graceful, knowing that God hears you and knows about your intention to offer your most sincere prayers.
Think of a role model, for example the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and try to imagine what his prayers were like and how he devoted himself to God. Think of a person you know and how he/she prays. Think of Prophet (PBUH) and his people and how they prayed and how they made du'a and how God tested them because of their immense faith and how their iman was so strong.
Make du'a too, ask your Lord for guidance and protection from Satan, and if you fast, read the Qur'an if you can and bow down in prayer to your Lord. If you are happy and content, offer your prayers with extra concentration and thank for all the things He gave to you. If you are saddened or disheartened, or misfortune befell you, think of your Lord who is the only one who can actually help you and He is most Merciful. Pray for yourself, but don't forget your parents, your siblings if you have them, your friends, the Mumineen and the Muminat, people in misery and war and people who are very happy right now (for example people having a baby or getting married and feeling blessed) and remember that each prayer is a brick in your house in Paradise, so is each righteous deed, and try to make astaghfarah for your sins. The only things you can take with you to your grave are the immaterial things. Your house and your wealth, even your body is not going to make it to the Hereafter. Your good deeds, God loves you and has mercy on you. He created you. You are young. Live blissfully and be happy, but don't forget your Lord who bestowed on you your blessings and purifies you by misfortune.
I'm fourteen years old too, and whenever I feel too tired to get up and pray I make ablution with my mother or my sister and listen to a beautifully recited Surah from the Qur'an and it's so uplifting, it always makes me want to pray and I think of how I could possibly thank anyone who bestowed all these gracious gifts upon me. May all of this help you and may God guide you.

  18. Salam.

You should do zikr after every namaz it really brings me closer to allah SWT and read burda sharif

    Jazakallah

  19. always prey to Allah to remove all the laziness from you.

  21. Just think that who is making u lazy ? THE SHAYTAN and I'm sure u don't want the SHAYTAN to take control of u this is what I fear and I get up and pray

  22. Assalaamualaikum,
    this is fouzia,
dear sister i am elder than you and i too have the same problem. What we are to do is...just remember that Allaah(swt) is not in need of us. We are only in need of Him. We pray to Allaah (swt) to thank Him for all the blessings, beg and plead to Him for our needs and for repentence. Being a girl it is very important for u to pray because as u grow up u will have to pass each grade of this life with so much self control, adjustment, forgiving, forgetting and so on. So to pass all these stages and suceed in duniya and most importantly our hereafter...u have to pray continuously and be dependant only on Allaah(swt). So in short...nothing is possible without Allaah(swt)'s will. So as to attain His will we should pray, plead and repent. May Allaah(swt) guide u and me and all our Muslim population in thy right path...aameen!!!

  23. Aoa. I am also 14,and believe me when i say this, i am also lazy like you and this little trick actually helped me so much. Someone once told me and i think this tactic really actually works, okay so whenever you use the bathroom, or break your Wudu, do the Wudu again. If you stay in Wudu for the entire day, whenever, Salat time is here, you can just pray without doing the Wudu at that exact time. Try it. It literally makes it 75 percent easier to get up and pray, because you're not lazy to do the Wudu. GIVE IT A SHOT. Inshalla it'll work! Best of luck! Also can you please do Dua that I also can get in the habit of Praying.
    Waslam
    🙂

  24. This is just too familiar.

Too combat this, firstly try to think how elated our Prophet (pbuh) would be if he finds out on the day of judgement, that there was a certain person on earth, who, even though felt like not praying - did so.

    S/he forced HER/HIMSELF to pray.

Imagine the amount of sawaabs you'll be cashing in!

Side Note: On the day of judgement, when Allah would reward the people with lifelong affliction and suffering, more in number, than the usual people, you know what the usual people will say?

"Why werent we one of the people who had suffered in life, because if we were, Allah would have rewarded us even more"

    !!

To get a jump start towards Allah, I HIGHLY recommend a once in a week fast, or "Saum" as we call it.

  25. Stop watching movies, TV and songs. Stop distracting yourself. Basically you have to stop your life for atleast a month. During this time you will inittialy feel discomfort but towards the end you will have so much time on your hand and you will realise that praying is something far better then sitting doing nothing. Also go to bed around 9. Make it a habbit. Sleeping early right after Isha prayers means you will wake early, quite before morning prayers. Here you will get the chance to make sure that you pray for these two times very easily.

    • Aoa its true when we perform salah five times a day we feel ourselves very light I tried so much to become regular but due to my bad health I couldn't then I ask a question to myself I can do everything to fulfill my responsibilities because I know nobody will help me or I know Allah is very mercifully he will surely forgive me but this is not an excuse I always prayed Allah forgive my sins

  26. Ma sha Alla .you are such good Muslim with nafs lowama which means alive consiousness you blame your self for not being perfect and that is a sign that Alla loves you.my advice to you dear daughter is to do wodoo after you use the washroom, make it part of the routine. You pee you wash your self you flush the toilet you do quick wodoo.you always ready when you hear the prayer call

  27. Wa alaikum asalam!'

    Your friend'
    Zainab

  28. Thank you have really motivated me to start praying and may Alllahbless you

  29. Oh my beloved sister,

if Allah (swt.) would not love you he would have not gave you the burden of Salah.
Some quick advice for your abolution:

"O you who believe, when you rise to observe the Salat, you shall wash your faces and your arms to the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles." 5:6

This is the ablution decreed in the Quran. It consists of four simple steps:

    1- Wash the face

2- Wash the arms to the elbows

    3- Wipe the head

4- Wipe the feet to the ankles.

If it is to difficult to do the whole Sunnah of wudhu, just do what is obligitory. This makes your wudhu easy.
Read about wiping over your socks.
This even makes it more easy for you.

For the Sallah I can give you to advice.

    First:
    Hadith 1:350 in Al-Bukhari

    Narrated 'Aisha:
the mother of believers: Allah enjoined the prayer when He enjoined it, it was two Rakat only (in every prayer) both when in residence or on journey. Then the prayers offered on journey remained the same, but (the Rakat of) the prayers for non-travellers were increased.

So start, as also started with the believers of that time, by just performing 2 rakahs every time it is time to pray.
After a while it becomes a habit, and you start doing more yourself.

The second one is from the Quran itself:

"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater." 29:45

The prayer itself, is the establisher for your next prayer.

Asselamun Aleikum ve rahmetullahi ve berekatuhu my beloved sister.

  30. Salam.I have the same rewson behind not praying daily.Even though I try NOT to miss prayers but I do miss prayers just because of laziness.Today I left the isha namaz.I am regretful now when its 2:19 AM:(

  31. I take a oath with the help of alllah...that from now I will pray 5times a day....!!!!

  32. We pray because of one simple reason: We love Allah. It’s the loving Allah part that makes it easy. It’s the loving Allah part that makes you stand up when you’re exhausted. Without that piece of the puzzle, nothing else will make salah stick.

When we look at the early Muslims, when Islam first came down, were there a lot of commandments? No, there weren’t. The early surahs are filled with lessons about Allah, about His Angels, His Messengers, His Books. The rules and regulations came later, after the foundation was built. So when we look at our own lives, why do we focus on the rules and regulations without paying attention to the foundation first?

If we want to be amongst those who pray.. Who pray regularly and easily.. Who jump up when the time for salah begins.. Then we need to begin first by building a love for Allah. And in order to do this, we need to KNOW Him.

I always tell people who aren’t praying to begin first with dhikr. Say SubhanAllah 100 times each day. And as you do so, reflect on our own weaknesses, and the Greatness of Allah. Reflect on how it is only with His Help that we are able to do anything. When you do this, you’ll start a habit of THINKING about Allah. You’re remembering Him.

And what happens when you remember Allah? It starts to soften your dead heart.. You start to have more peace.. And most importantly, He remembers YOU.

    dua-woman-at-sunset1

Ibn al-Qayyim stated, “In the heart there is hardness which can only be softened by remembrance of Allah. So the slave must treat the hardness of his heart with the remembrance of Allah.”

“Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Qur’an, 13:28)

“I am to my servant as he expects of Me, I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him to Myself, and if he remembers me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly better than his…” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Be MINDFUL of this as you sit each day doing some dhikr. Think to yourself, I am walking towards Allah.. As the last hadith goes on to say..

“… When he comes closer to Me by a handspan, I come closer to him an arm’s length. If he draws closer to Me by an arm’s length, I draw closer by a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him. If my servant comes to Me walking, I go to him running.” (Al-Bukhari)

You’re not praying (yet) but be mindful that you are getting closer. Allow yourself to be in a state where you know you aren’t doing what you’re supposed to, but you’re taking steps to get there. One of the tactics of Shaitan is that he leads you to believe that it’s all or nothing. Either you’re praying, or you’re sinfully not. So when we’re not, a dark cloud of guilt hovers over us, leaving us in darkness, unable to move forward.

    remember-allah-poster

Do you know the story of the man who killed 99 men?

Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Prophet of Allah (PBUH) said: “There was a man from among a nation before you who killed ninety-nine people and then made an inquiry about the most learned person on the earth. He was directed to a monk.

He came to him and told him that he had killed ninety-nine people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the negative and the man killed him also completing one hundred. He then asked about the most learned man in the earth. He was directed to a scholar. He told him that he had killed one hundred people and asked him if there was any chance for his repentance to be accepted. He replied in the affirmative and asked, `Who stands between you and repentance? Go to such and such land; there (you will find) people devoted to prayer and worship of Allah, join them in worship, and do not come back to your land because it is an evil place.’ So he went away and hardly had he covered half the distance when death overtook him; and there was a dispute between the angels of mercy and the angels of torment. The angels of mercy pleaded, ‘This man has come with a repenting heart to Allah,’ and the angels of punishment argued, ‘He never did a virtuous deed in his life.’ Then there appeared another angel in the form of a human being and the contending angels agreed to make him arbiter between them. He said, `Measure the distance between the two lands. He will be considered belonging to the land to which he is nearer.’ They measured and found him closer to the land (land of piety) where he intended to go, and so the angels of mercy collected his soul”.
    [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In another version: “He was found to be nearer to the locality of the pious by a cubit and was thus included among them”. Another version says: “Allah commanded (the land which he wanted to leave) to move away and commanded the other land (his destination) to draw nearer and then He said: “Now measure the distance between them.’ It was found that he was nearer to his goal by a hand’s span and was thus forgiven”. It is also narrated that he drew closer by a slight movement on his chest.

What is awesome about this story is that he hadn’t dramatically changed in terms of his actions. He was just WALKING towards change. And that was enough for Allah. Allah is so patient that He watches us disobey Him. And He waits. Waiting for us to turn back to Him. SubhanAllah!

So begin by walking towards Him. And be mindful that when you do your dhikr, you are taking a step.

Another good step is to begin learning His Names. When you KNOW Him, really know Him, you can’t help but attach your heart onto Him. Knowing Allah’s Names will draw your heart closer to Him. And as it does so, you will remember Him more..

Over time, your desire to please Him and turn back to Him will increase.. And this, my friends, is what will fill you up. This is what will take away the hollowness.. THIS is what will make salah easy. THIS is where the advice, ‘take it one salah at a time’ will be beneficial. When you get to this place, it won’t be such a giant leap to contemplate standing up for one prayer. And slowly, one will become two.. And so on..

But before you begin building your prayers, take the time to build your foundations, just as they early Muslims did. Start with baby steps, like doing dhikr or learning His Names.

    • May Allah bless you for your amazing advice. May Allah bless all of us, the sister who posted the question originally as well, with TRUE love for Allah, TRUE love for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his sunnah, and lasting steadfastness in offering prayer, making Dhikr, Salawat, acquiring religious knowledge and sharing with others.
May Allah bless us with a good heart and character, and may the Prophet be proud of each of us and our offspring on the Day of Judgement for being exemplary bearers of the flag of Islam.
I pray that Allah accept my prayers, as currently my heart is filled with sadness and shame for not dedicating enough to Islam, for being weak and allowing Shaytan and my Nafs to play around with me and distract me from what really matters...Ya Allah I repent and ask refuge in You against my weaknesses, my shortcomings, and I pray that you bless me with a long life contributing to your Deen and the next generations.

As-Salaam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu everyone!

  33. Salam. My names's Mazahir and I'm 17 and I seem to have the same problem. Like I really love namaz and I really want to but laziness comes as a barricade. I don't know what to do. I've been praying namaz since I was 5 years old and I prayed it regularly but when I turned 14 I stopped. I don't know what happened. I really want this fault in me to wash away. And ever since I stopped praying namaz, I've had a bad luck. I've been unlucky ever since. And I want this bad luck to be gone too. I've been depressed. I came here for the solution of the same problem. I love Allah very much and I'm scared of his punishments and Hell but I can't help it. I hope someone understands me. Please...help me!

  34. We are all lazy because of satan(demons). He makes it difficult for us when we try to strive to wudhu. He whispers in our ears which I am sure you heard an inner voice in your head "oh man, I don't want to wudhu but I feel bad" satan is a hypocrite. He tries to convince you. But we should not listen to him. As hard as it gets, don't listen to this inner laziness from shaytan. He will make us go to hell. He not only whispers in our ears don't wudhu but also do other bad things. But it's up to us to disobey him and obey Allah. And at the time you are about to wudhu try to read the benefit of wudhu. Maybe you will never leave in the state of wudhu. Wudhu renews your faith. Wudhu keeps Shaytan away. Wudhu before sleep Allah sends an angel to you keep to keep you safe. Wudhu and enters a masjid a mosque Angels will constantly ask Allah for your forginess. Etc if only you know how good is wudhu, you would like to die in the state of purity(wudhu). Lastly each time you wudhu it washes your sins even the sins you don't know. I hope this helps. Stay away from Shaytan by wudhu he is our true enemy.

  35. Assalamualaikum WR WB sister and to all reading this post

You don't need to do wudu before every prayer. Only if you break wudu you have to do it again in order to pray. I am pretty sure that is the correct ruling regarding wudu.

All I can say is always make dua to Allah. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins and ask him to help you pray 5 times a day consistently. Just keep trying to pray 5 times a day no matter how many times you fail, and InshaAllah eventually you will be able to pray 5 times a day with ease. It might take some time to get it right but InshaAllah eventually you will get there.

I was someone who didn't pray 5 times a day before but I kept making dua to Allah to forgive me of shortcomings and to help me pray 5 times a day and I kept trying and trying and trying until I was able to pray 5 times a day consistently.

  36. Aslaam alayikum WB,

I would just like to say that everyone's comments have been amazing and if we try and follow the true guidance which is all within our beautiful book the quran,Allah(SWT) will keep us close always Insha'Allah... Always make dua to succeed in this world but more importantly the hereafter and the key to all your duas is crucially NAMAZ...

  37. Asalamalaikum
Yes laziness is the first part in humans life..... Even for praying and others. The only thing is that sister allhumduliha we arw muslums
After being a muslim also we dont recite QURAN daily.......
Atleast we hve to think that we arw offering preyer for our selves not for any one..... Just bcoz after our death the nmzz is only helpfull for us..... Recite ASTAQFIRALLAH daily so that laziness will b. Far... Inshallah

  38. (These top portion is not my point, so please take time to read the full)

I’m going to tell you something And will give you a link. I’m also like your age, 12. But my thing is that I shy to perform salah in front of people. So, What I do is I hide myself and perform the prayer by sitting. That’s not a proper way. But my point is not that.
You know, The teacher at your school who gives the exam questions knows all the answers. But it is to justify you. Allah doesn’t need Ibadat. But we have to keep the order of Allah. Allah gave us life to us right. And made us to be more superior than angels. The angels does keeps the order of Allah with no control over his body. If Allah really needed this, Allah could made us to have no control over our body and like the angels to follow the orders of Allah. We are so awesome that we do remember the name of Allah after having so much problems and complexities in our daily life. Wow.
And I know you do love Allah literally. And that’s why this was not also my point! Was just telling.

You remember, Allah still loves you, he still have hope from you and remembered all the good deeds you have done. Remember the deeds you did and do to make Allah happy.

Now, to the point, My best advice will be that, When you perform Sarah, make it meaningful. If someone stands in front of you and tells that he loves you and doesn’t knows the meaning. Is it a conversation? And The another best advice. Keep all the times Wadu. So Satan might not enter into your holy body. And you might not think anything wrong, as you have a fear that your ablution could be broken and you are too lazy to go to the bathroom without the time you go for doing excretion. And another Best advice from me, niyat some nafal namaz each day so it could make you too much comfortable to it.

And be sure to check this out. It teaches you to Love Allah better- http://productivemuslim.com/your-jannah-todo-list/

  39. Salam Alaiykum,
My age is also like 15 and sorry me for my bad English.

Today's common excuse of not to pray is this.. Muslim of this age are too lazy because of the technology has made us very lazy. Not praying also we're lazy to obey our parents and other prescribed duties in Islam. Today we want the world in our palm of hand. Hence; We're too lazy for the hardworking's.

    Let's say step by step.

-Stay away from sins as much as possible: Meaning that Music is now normal [even] its a sin, but I find most of the people in listening music. This was an example that you should keep yourself away from sins. Commiting sins attacks our Imaan and breaks it.

-Ablution [Be Ready]: Making ablution [Wudhu] makes our body clean, refresh and ready. There are further more benefits of doing ablution. It will strengthen you spiritually. It will give you inner peace. Cleanliness has great importance in the Islam. Ablution keeps you clean and pure. It protects you from several physical diseases. It is obligatory for the Muslims perform it before the prayers.

Both the Quran and the Hadith emphasized many times on the importance of purification. It is the part of Faith. It gives you mental, physical and spiritual health.

Performing Good Deeds: I hope you're not that much lazy to commit little good deeds. For example: Obeying your elders, Helping poor people, Being Kind. As additional: just smiling on the face of your brother as counted as charity. Performing good deeds boosts our Imaan.

The above are best solution in my opinion.

I too sometime face this situation but Allah helps me alot in his way. May Allah guides to the path of our beloved Prophet and keep us clean from the sins.

    Salam Alaiykum.

  40. I was on a website which was so helpful, this is my seventh week nearly my eight, after looking on another website, I am praying all 5 prayers
I am was 12 when I aws trying to find motivation, Just do what I do and you will get used to it but remember one thing, to pray, you need a strong relationship with your mother, make her happy
