How to Improve My Career Path?

Indian call center employees in cubiclesSalaams to all.

I would like to talk about one's career. I have stepped into the job world a few years ago but it has been very difficult to make my way. There have been a lot of struggles and times where I was very demotivated and did not even want to go the office.

I am a very hard worker and do more than my normal hoping that the extra effort would be recognized every year but it is not.

There is a guy at work who is at the same level as I am, does much less work than I do but he is closer to our Lead and gets more recognition for the little work he does.

I have many times asked Allah why I was not being rewarded for the hard work (with salary increase and being higher in the hierarchy) as I was doing everything that I can physically can.

The guy is very arrogant and has a communication style that is very harsh. I have prayed that I do not behave that way with my colleagues.

I am a calm person, when I lose temper I always feel guilty and ask for forgiveness and try to be better the next day.

I have always hoped that others would see the work that I am doing without being selfish with personal objectives believing that Allah would not give me what I want but give me what I deserve.

Everyday in my duahs, I pray that I get the promotion that I would so very much like but I do not want to keep my hopes up as I have been deceived before.

What are the duas I make?  What can I do so that Allah knows and sends me his blessings?

I did lose faith for a period of time, as other people were being rewarded even though they did not do their namaz or spent a lot of time partying etc. Sometimes, it is difficult to understand.

Thank you for your kind advice.

  1. Zora,

Unfortunately, in some organisations, climbing the ladder depends on 'who you know' and not 'what you know'. Having said that, if you feel you are being treated unfairly or being discriminated against for any reason, you should not be expected to suffer in silence. I do not know which country you live in, but the UK has policies in place which aim to establish equal opportunities for all, so employees cannot be discriminated against due to their gender, religion, age, race, disability etc. Find out what the process of promotion is in your organisation and work towards that. If you feel you are being treated unfairly, then speak to your management about it.

I cannot advise you on how to improve your career path as this is not a career advisory service. Although, I can say, that whatever you do at work, always remain honest and trustworthy. As Muslims we should strive to the best of our abilities in all we do and if we do our worldly work with honesty and integrity, this is also a form of worship to Allah.

With regards to 'reward' - what is your idea of a reward? How do we know that someone's gain is going to be beneficial for them, i.e. a reward? It could be a punishment, it could be a test or yes, a reward. Allah knows best.

If other people are not praying salaah and are partying, that is between them and Allah - they will be answerable, as you and all of us will be for our flaws too. All of us will taste the fruits of our good and bad deeds/intentions. We will be tested through our work, money, health, children, families, friends, marriages, desires etc. Keep doing your best at everything with Allah in mind, making sure to remember that your goal on this earth is to worship Him(swt). So if you want Baraqah in your life, stick to your five daily prayers, recite, understand and implement the Quran, strengthen your family ties, feed the hungry etc. Don't be hasty and do not feel that Allah is not answering your duas; He(swt) always answers our duas.

Strive, be patient and remember your real goals in life.

  2. Salaam my Sister,

In every organisation you need a good team of people which have to vary in their skills and attributes - you need superstars (who are demanding and create a lot of business - generally they tend to be extroverts), you need steady people (who work consistently and constantly and are happy to do the same job for 10 years who are generally introverts), and a whole mix of people and characters.

It may be that your boss has identified you as the steady person, who is happy to do the role that they are doing and does not have strong career ambition and need for betterment. That makes you valuable to the team, and naturally if you do not want progress then they will not give you progress.

If you seek progress, you must make this clear to your manager. Managers do not have a telepathic ability to read their employee's minds and know what they feel - so the best way to do this is to communicate to your manager that you seek progress. This can be raised in your next appraisal, or you can initiate a meeting with your manager to express your need for more responsibility and progress in your job. Your manager will then feedback to you what is required from you to achieve this and make a plan with you on how to get it.

When you speak to your manager, remember not to complain or say any bad things about your role, your team mates or your job. Simply state that you feel you have mastered your current level of work, and would like to learn about how to move on and up and then advertise your accomplishments to your manager as you go along. InshaAllah this will create success for you.

    Peace,

    L

  3. Assalamo Alaykom Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu. Allah said:(( Wa in shakartum, laajiydannakum.)) And if you (sincerely) gives thanks (to ALLAH) Truly, I have to increase( you my blessings) .Give zakah and sadaqah, may ALLAh increase your wealth with barakah. You made dua always? did you not read this: Our Holy Prophet Muhammad Said:((Inna Jibreela muwakkalun bi hawaizi bani Adam, Fa idhaa da'aal Abdu Kafiyru, qaalallahu ta'alaa: (( Ya Jibreel uqdhi haajatahu Fa inni laa uhibbu an asma'a du'a ahu )) wa idhaa da'aal Abdul Muhminu qaala:(( Ya Jibreel! Ihbis Haajatahu Fa Inniy uhibbu an asma'a du'a ahu)) Narrated by ibno Najjar from Jabir(R.A.).Indeed Jebreel(A.S.) is assigned for the needs of Adam's children. So if the disbelieving Servant prays (ask for something), Allah(S.W.T) O! Jibreel, fullfill his need Because Truly I hate or I don't love to listen to his supplications(dua). And when the believing servant prays( for something) Allah says:( O! Jibreel, delay the fullfillment of his need because truly I love to listen to his invocation(dua)..
You really want to seek progress? Then here is the dua:( After prasing and thanking ALLAH, make salwat 11 times for our Holy Prophet Muhammad S.A.W., then recite this jikir at least 196 times daily, (( Subhanallahil wahhaabil quddowsi, laa ilaha illa huwa, Fa'aalun limaa yureed.)), then make salawat to our Prophet Muhammad S.A.W.. 11 times and end it with wasalaamun alall mursaleen walhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen.)Do it at least 41 days. May Allah increase your wealth with barakah and make you enter Jannah. ameen.
